Less than a week after Primus made things 3-D, Cat Power brought laser lights and her tour with Willis Earl Beal and X-Ray Eyeballs to Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC last night (10/23). How was the show? Hopefully nobody fell out of the balcony. The setlist is below...

(cut)??? Does that mean she didn't finish the song? What happened???

ps I wonder if this show was almost sold out....

Hopefully next time, she'll play at MHOW or Bowery!

Extremely boring and bland show. Give me back my money.

If you couldn't get laid at this show you are probably not a lesbian.

^ Man, now I wish I had been there!

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 1:26 PM

would have thought Nothing but time was a going to b the closing song

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 1:40 PM

Wrong venue for her. Was this even close to full?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 2:45 PM

I like Chan's Chinese Kitchen

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 2:45 PM

you got thum thmokes?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 3:22 PM

i wasn't feeling it, either. wasn't the venue's fault. the band didn't seem into it. and the drummer played behind some sort of plexiglass. her set had no soul.

As for the "cut" song, she performed most of it, then said "This is not how it's supposed to sound" and apologized to the crowd. Sounded fine to me!

the cut song sounded like ass in a can. the percussionists were way off timing, for one. some shitty minimalist techno-influenced crapshow. good for her for having some judgment last night.

however, like her last pass through NY with the dirty delta band, the greatest was excellent. of course the next song was a pile of shit.

The show looked like it was almost sold out, decent crowd.
But the show sucked. She sounded fine and the band sounded ok, but BORING and bland. During one song, the stage was dark and there was one annoying BRIGHT light pointed towards the audience. And unfortunately, that song semed to drone on forever. I'll never see her live again.

I Gots Thum Thmokes! Do You Gots Thum Pockets I Can Ash My Thmokes In??

I saw her at Webster Hall last year. Pretty dark show, not in a bad way. Did anyone see that one and this one, and how did the two compare? For extra credit how was the opener?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 4:35 PM

i heard that the scientologists didn't want her...

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 4:44 PM

Floor was packed beyond capacity. 2nd balcony mostly full. 3rd balcony empty.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 4:45 PM

I thought the show started shaky... got going in the middle when she started really singing again and despite the one cut song it ended strong.. i thought her band was really good and interesting

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 4:51 PM

saw both last year's and this year's. two totally different shows. the sound was better at webster hall, and her band was tighter. jim white on drums, and other excellent musicians. last night was like a techno-goth band. definitely not as polished, but very different vibe. last year was dark and smokey, but mostly boring. but she really soared at times last year, supported by that band. the end of The Greatest last year was the best thing I've heard her do live over about 6 shows and 10+ years of seeing her. the venue sucked last night for what she was trying to do - too cavernous.
still, at least she has broken out of the shadow-depressed schtick. fun to see her with the blonde mohawk and so front/center.
first time i saw her, her hair was mopped over her face and she didn't once look up. maybe the difference between junk and speed?

Question: What does Chan Marshall use for a tour bus?

Answer: An Ambulance. She gets bad allergies because:

SHE'S AFRAID OF AMERICANS...SHE'S AFRAID OF THE WORLD!!!

Wow 5:14 you are so insightful.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 6:01 PM

^I hope that's not intended as snark because I really did find 5:14's comment to be insightful. And no...I'm not 5:14.

What...no mention of X-Ray Eyeballs? How the hell did they fare at Hammerstein?!?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 6:13 PM

4:44 ftw

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 6:33 PM

5:14 was answering my (4:35) question, 6:01. I also found his review insightful. Why don't you go back to torturing small animals or carving the eyes out of subway posters?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 7:10 PM

If you depend on reviews for insight your eyes have already been carved out and your little animals have already been tortured.

She sounded top notch with the Memphis blues band touring the greatest before she got the joe cocker stage moves.

Doubt she was on dope

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 8:09 PM

doubt she was on dope back in 98. I liked the hair covering her face with the mighty dirty three backing her.

Metal heart.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 8:10 PM

I don't think that 7:10 was saying that they relied upon the submitted review for insight. But I doubt that you would be able to understand what was actually written without putting it through the meat grinder of your troll mind.

Back 2 joke skool for you, back back back you go.

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 9:24 PM

Is it me or is she much better live than recorded?

Posted by Anonymous | October 24, 2012 9:37 PM

agree with 8:10. dirty three backing her was excellent.
