Royal Trux's 'Twin Infinitives'
Twin Infinitives

Do you ever hear your influence on new bands? Do you often hear something and say, "Oh!"

Yeah, I have. And people from other bands have told me that. But I think it's more signifiers than people being able to get the sounds that we got. Because nobody has my voice, nobody can play the guitar like Neil, nobody can write songs like we can. But I think a lot of signifiers have been utilized in the spirit of Royal Trux, for sure. A lot of bands have been really vocal about us influencing them, and then there's been a lot of people who don't talk about it because...they don't like giving props, or whatever. (laughs)

Do you listen to a lot of new rock bands?

I've definitely heard some cool stuff. I like the new Blues Control album that came out. I think we played with them once. I don't remember what they were all about live, but I liked the record. We played a show with friends of ours, Wild Yaks. I like their show, but I never heard any of their recorded stuff.

As far as big, big records mostly rap. I'm just kind of stoked for the new Bones Thugs n' Harmony. - [L Mag]

That's Jennifer Herrema of '90s indie rockers Royal Trux, reminscing about her old band's 1998 album Accelerate that was just reissued by Drag City. The record got the "Best New Reissue" tag from Pitchfork and can be picked up in basically any non-cassette format of your choice.

Meanwhile, if this can be believed, Royal Trux will perform their 1992 album, Twin Infinitives, in full at Saint Vitus on December 8 with openers Pigeons. It's their only live date currently and, of course, the real question is, is this an actual Royal Trux reunion with Herrema and Neil Hagerty or just one of them. Hagerty has been making music under The Howling Hex moniker; Herrema carried on as RTX but now fronts Black Bananas. One thing we do know for sure: tickets are on sale.

UPDATE (10/13): Mystery solved. Saint Vitus' ticket page now reads "Neil Michael Hagerty performing Royal Trux - 'Twin Infinitives.'" This post's title has been changed to reflect this too.

In other news, Black Bananas have a new video for "It's Cool," the lead track from their album, Rad Times Xpress IV, which came out early this year. Watch it below.

Where are you getting this from?

HIGHLY doubt it. Or at least I highly doubt Hagerty is participating.

Q: One last question, it seems like besides you and David Berman, all the original Drag City artists seem to be going in a more commercial friendly direction. Bill Callahan is recording really clean sounding records with John Congleton, Will Oldham is playing folk and blue grass festivals and also making really clean records, Stephen Malkmus is chasing the 90′s nostalgia money… but, since the release of the Neil michael Hagerty and the Howling Hex double lp, you have seemed to go in a weirder and weirder direction. Have there been any ATP offers for you to do something like a concert tour of Accelerator live or any pressure for you to make a straight forward rock and roll record? Or do you just try to ignore what’s going on in the music industry right now?

A: There are some explanations for this. First: in Royal Trux and, to a lesser extent, Pussy Galore I did all the things I wanted to do in ROCK…jets, roadies, expensive equipment, wimmins, death, money, drugs, 6 month recording schedules, hockey arenas, transatlantic fame– whatever it might be, I feel like I did it and so that’s done. Second: I truly dislike Americana, white blues, metal, country music, ukuleles etc– I think it is all unpleasant. So I don’t really want to get involved with any of that bullshit again. The first three solo records I did, I tried to round all the bases and do really synthetic coverage of various styles that people seem to consider classic, meaningful, soulful or real; to satirize them in a self-destructive way. So, now I’m done with that and I can just play what I hear and earn about as much money as you’d get in a semi-decent job. I’ve gotten a lot of offers for Royal Trux reunions, or even for Hex to play at festivals or other similar things, but I’d never do it. I’d like a band to stay broken up for a change and also, I really hate those big festivals which seem to be the main direction things are going in, big conglomerated events. I really like a small nightclub vibe most of all.

Wild Yaks friends hyping them again

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 6:51 PM

It's listed on the Drag City website.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 6:55 PM

Holy shit! I guess the only question left is if "Royal Trux" inherently means JH & NH.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 6:59 PM

I hope I didn't just waste $23.80.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 7:00 PM

^hahah, me too

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 7:04 PM

well, that explains why he opted out of the Pussy Galore reunion last year.....

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 7:21 PM

Neil is ok I guess, but it would be awesome if this Royal Trux lineup was Jennifer fronting Wild Yaks. Go Yaks! YAKS YAKS YAKS

Posted by Yak Addict | October 12, 2012 7:36 PM

Just picked one up. Hope this is for real.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 7:43 PM

It is Neil Hagerty performing the royal trux album twin infinitives....it is NOT Royal Trux by any means it is the material only

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 7:52 PM

Too much Jennifer on that record for it to be a Neil only affair---that would be lame.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:00 PM

@7:52, source?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:00 PM

^ is that your guess or a fact?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:01 PM

doesn't that album kinda suck?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:04 PM

I run the website with the quoted NMH interview from the first comment, back tracked the link to here and was confused about this announcement myself.

If you go to the Drag City website, it clearly states the following:

"Neil Hagerty plays "Twin Infinitives" with 3 additional musicians, Jennifer Herrema not performing."

Posted by Dead C | October 12, 2012 8:05 PM

^ha, they JUST changed it.

sweet though! I actually prefer it this way.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:08 PM

That's just stupid---glad I didn't buy a ticket. Definitely not the most accessible in the Royal Trux discography, but an interesting/compelling listen nonetheless. Without Jennifer, you have no Royal Trux and no reason to see this performed without her. What the fuck is Hagerty thinking?! It's not like he's replacing the drummer.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:22 PM

It's a joke without Jennifer...they are her songs for sure

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:22 PM

Yeah I'm getting my money back

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 8:28 PM

To clear this up once and for all, the NMH performing the show is actually Neutral Milk Hotel. Neil just confirmed it on his blog.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2012 11:42 PM

Hope this is for real.

Posted by Honda CR-Z | October 13, 2012 2:37 AM

It really is cats n' dogs with those two (JJ and Neil). This is not Royal Trux performing. You need them both.
To get cock-rocky, this is like Mick performing without Keith and calling it a Rolling Stones show (though Jennifer is more like Mick, I think. Sorry for the muddy comparison!)
As far as Royal Trux is concerned, you need those two lookers in one room - scrapping it out!
Anyway, I prefer Black Bananas. Yeah, I said it.

Posted by cliff edge | October 13, 2012 12:35 PM

Agreed with many of the others. This is just stupid. But at least they finally changed it on the St Vitus ticket link to Neil Haggerty plays Royal Trux. Feel bad for the suckers who bought tickets already thinking it was Jennifer and Neil.

Well I don't feel bad really cause those that did are idiots. If you actually know about this band or was a fan you would know that they will never perform together again. There is real hate there mostly on the part of Neil. They communicate very little and I think Jennifer said only by email. Neil is a dirty junkie or ex junkie who sits all day taking care of cats and letting everyone else know how shitty and predictable the music biz is. Then he goes and pulls this little bit of nonsense.

This will suck without Jennifer.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 12:55 PM

^ Typo fix. It is Hagerty

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 12:56 PM

12:55: Yeah I'm an idiot b/c I just listen to a band's albums and don't bother keeping up with all their inter-band/inter-relationship drama. My bad.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 1:18 PM

Neil is funny.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 1:24 PM

12:55 got almost nothing right.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 1:42 PM

1:42 is Neil Hagerty sitting at home being bitter.

12:55 was spot on.

I just spoke with Neil and the "Royal Trux" show will be insane (more like beatlemania styles)..... he has various kids playing the parts of the trux line-up at the time of twin infinitives....young girl that is huge fan will be playing my part and another young kid playing the part of the dude anil that played drum machines...the only reason neil is actually playing instead of just directing is that the kids are way too scared without him. I think the show should be really amazing but i told him it was fucked that he dint talk to me about it ....it's all good now and the show should be sick...i told him i wanted him to do press to set the context correct. just thought i'd let yall know what's up. :p xxxJJ

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 10:45 PM

Here we are, talking about something that ALREADY HAPPENED.

Posted by H. Golscht | October 13, 2012 11:09 PM

J. Herrema has used the "RTX" moniker a lot since Royal Trux went under, and I was never too cool with that. Similarly, I wouldn't be cool if Neil called it Royal Trux without JH. I like NMH's solo music, JH's isn't my thing. I have no problem with the guy performing the stuff as long as it isn't done in a misleading way, just as I wouldn't have a problem with JH doing the same.

Hey Jennifer, how much did Tropicana pay you guys for licensing "Juicy Juicy Juice"? The fat guy from Chunklet called it a sellout but it was brilliantly subversive in retrospect.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 11:12 PM

Neil is funny.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2012 11:34 PM

There are photos on a Denver-based website of new resident Neil looking like a grad student of no discernable age. Denver vegan?
Did Tropicana really license "Juicy Juicy Juice"? God I hope so.

Neil >>>>>>>>>> Jennifer

Check the Drag City site:
It says Royal Trux playing Twin Infinitives.

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2012 5:10 PM

the WILD YAKS part is pretty funny, that band sucks

Posted by Owen | October 16, 2012 2:29 AM

"ACCELERATE"

Posted by Owen | October 16, 2012 2:32 AM

Pigeons is opening for this? Great band. Drummer Nathan also plays banjo inna Pelt spin.off string band (see blacktwigpickers dot com). Kinda funny, given:

"Second: I truly dislike Americana, white blues, metal, country music, ukuleles etc– I think it is all unpleasant. So I don’t really want to get involved with any of that bullshit again."

Very interesting article, I look forward to more research coming out regarding the remaining two thirds

Posted by Veiled Clothing | November 23, 2012 11:23 AM

Theres about maybe 10 interesting metal bands who have been around for a while out 10,000 or so that pop up every 5 mins lately.
