Afghan Whigs @ MHOW, 10/6/2012
Afghan Whigs

The Afghan Whigs wrapped up their run of New York shows with a sold-out gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday (10/6). It was a more stirring affair than any of their three previous shows this year with 1965's "The Slide Song," "Neglekted" and "Omerta," arguably three of the most soulful songs in their entire catalog, making their way into the set. They were complemented with covers of The Supremes and Frank Ocean as well as a slick version of "Citi Soleil" with Steve Myers, he of the excellent openers Mighty Fine, providing backing vocals. Reverend Vince Anderson and His Love Choir kicked off the night's music.

More pics from Saturday's show (including one of the setlist) are below.

This show just killed. Being from Ohio, I've literally seen them a ton of times since the late 80s, and I honestly believe they've gotten better with age. The openers were also great and Steve Myers was the secret weapon of the night.

Afghan whigs are NOT a nostalgia act! They sound amazing on this tour and I hope they hit the east coast again soon!

OOH SO MUCH 1965! Love it!

Whigs and Swans are 2 bands that have come back and are possibly even better than before.

Stellar show. Awesome pics Dominick.

And Mike I would correct your ordering:

1) tie: BB, ATP, T5, MHOW
2) any other AW performances from 2012
3) anything else going on any of those nights

Bowery = show of the year

Best moment of all four shows = "My Curse" at ATP

Most improved voice thanks to quitting smoking = Dulli

Bowery Show = Doc Gooden's Rockie Of The Year season (84)
ATP = Doc's Triple Crown season (85)
T5 = Doc's World Series winning year (86)
MHOW = Doc's comeback & no hitter (96)

So many memories, all of them good.

would have loved to seen My Curse at ATP but alas, missed that show.

12:14 - great references!

I wasn't feeling the Terminal 5 show, Bowery was great but MHoW blew it out of the water!

Music Hall was indeed spectacular but it couldn't match the energy and anticipation of the Bowery show.

Fuck, they were all great. Let it go.

Is it finally over? Will these nineties refugee, wannabe sellout, Soul Asylum sound-alike failures finally go away now?

^ 7:12 is in line right now for a special Mandingo performance, after which he and his girlfriend Jason will go have chevre and artichoke pan pizzas drizzled with truffle oil on Bedford Ave.

Pretty sick of all these emo reunions. Yeah I listened to all these bands back in college too. Doesn't mean I still do. This is a genre of music you should grow out of at 25 or so. Still playing it at 40? Now that's just a joke.
