check out this new photo of Amanda & her band...
Amanda Palmer

The always talented and controversial - mostly because she isn't afraid to try new things and speak her mind (especially on Twitter), Amanda Palmer, is playing a massive New Year's Eve show at NYC's Terminal 5 where she and The Grand Theft Orchestra will be performing Prince's Purple Rain in its entirety in addition to her original songs (get your tickets - regular or VIP).

Meanwhile, we asked Amanda to list her favorite 10 musical things from 2012, and you can see what she listed and watch her new NSFW video for "Do It With a Rockstar", below...

TOP 10 of 2012 by AMANDA PALMER

1. Regina Spektor - What We Saw From The Cheap Seats (key track "Oh Marcello") -
The Spektor is back. This record made me so so happy, Regina's sounding more like Regina to me.

2. Ben Folds Five - The Sound of the Life of the Mind (key tracks "Erase me", "Draw A Crowd")
Ben Folds spills his heart out, random pieces falling on the piano at 183787 miles per hour. He's deep here. Plus he's funny as FUCK.

3. Fiona Apple- "Every Single Night" -
WEIRDEST EAR-WORM OF THE YEAR, this song.

4. David Byrne's book "How Music Works"
David tells you how it is. This is a smart, smart man. Listen.

5. "Call Me Maybe"
I can't help it. The first time I heard it, I went back and listened to it 12 more times the same day. Crack song.

6. The Extra Action Marching Band
I love these guys and ran into them by accident in Berlin, 5 hours later they were gigging in my gallery's parking lot. Gotta love it. Pretty naked too, which is awesome.

7. Richard Thompson in Edinburgh: key songs "Beeswing", "52 Vincent Black Lightening"
I'd never seen him live, and within a few songs, I became a devotee. After seeing them live, I played these two songs over and over and over again all summer. They calmed me. And both make me cry if I'm even remotely on the edge.

8. Heather Christian and the Arbornauts
Best new act out of NYC - caught in Boston.

9. Jherek Bischoff - Composed
I'm biased because he's also my bass player, but this album is just a fucking winner all around...Jherek is the new voice of arrangement and orchestra. Singers & guests on the album include David Byrne, Mirah Zeitlyn, Caetano Veloso, SoKo, Nels Cline and Greg Saunier.

10. Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas
Bought it for a road trip along with 4-5 other new CDs that came out early in the year. Hated everything else. Loved this. Classic Leonard, back to basics - talking the pained perfect poems in that perfect voice. It's a truth record.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:13 AM

I think it would be fair to say that there are less flattering reasons for why she's controversial.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:14 AM

Waiting to see Andrew WK's top 10 of 2012.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:36 AM

It's like she stop listening to music after the '90s. God I can't stand this woman.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:38 AM

It's nice to see a list that's honest and not self-conscious.

"The always talented and controversial - mostly because she isn't afraid to try new things and speak her mind (especially on Twitter),"

Ummmm who wrote that for you??

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:52 AM

As a Prince fan, this offends me.

$60 to be stuck at Terminal 5 watching Amanda Palmer cover Prince?

$220 for VIP?

This will be an idiot magnet.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 10:49 AM

Who cares what this hairy-pitted bitch thinks?

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 10:56 AM

Shaves her legs, grows her pit hair, what an artiste

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 11:04 AM

YAWN

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 11:06 AM

It's like she's still in high school and trying too hard to be the weirdest of all of the theatre department kids.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 11:11 AM

10:38- A "Can't Hardly Wait" reference. Well done.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 11:47 AM

It really behooves me that people will pay to hear her sing Baby I'm a Star. Very behoovy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 11:50 AM

11:11 is on point

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 12:18 PM

Not paying musicians is not really "trying new things." It is quite an old thing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 1:14 PM

she can't sing at all, has no musical abilities...

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 2:21 PM

ew

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 3:20 PM

she has musical abilities, but her songs suck

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 3:59 PM

no she doesn't 3:59 but yes they do.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 4:09 PM

No, she's "controversial" because all her actions and career decisions are driven by money, greed, exploitation of her fans, and generally carrying on like an over-excited 14-year-old goth girl with a dim understanding of how the world works and an unfortunate penchant for the clearance rack of hot topic, likely on Neil Gaimen's MasterCard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 4:33 PM

If you don't like her music, that's your prerogative. But to the asshole who said "Who cares what the hairy pitted bitch thinks?," there's a special level of hell for internet trolls and you're going there.

Additionally anyone commenting on her not paying her musicians should really get educated about the situation and maybe at least try to understand her and her fans before you bash her.

Rant done.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 4:38 PM

For those not keeping up on her, she does in fact now pay her one-off musicians. She only did a few shows before changing that policy. But for what it's worth, if you had the chance to play live with a musician you admire, would you really be that worried about getting paid?

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 5:08 PM

is it New Year's Eve or New Years' Eve? maybe New Years Eve?

either way it's the night I save $60 by not going to Terminal 5.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 5:13 PM

If you don't like her that is fine but is anyone really supposed to impressed by negative loudmouthed jerks spouting hate anonymously? I mean if you don't like her don't go to her show. Simple.
I like her and I would go see the show if I could.

Posted by Kathleen | November 29, 2012 5:23 PM

She's nothing more than an attention whore masquerading as philanthropathic fundraiser. At least Bono is upfront about it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 5:27 PM

Bono may be a douche, but at least he has some talent -- not the case here.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 5:49 PM

F Worst . Go away .

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 6:05 PM

She probably thinks not shaving her legs is OMG!!SO!!!RADICAL!!!SUBVERSIVE!!!

She probably also think THAT'S why everyone thinks she's lame.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 6:07 PM

Wow. Why is everyone so grumpy here?

Posted by Iamerstwhile | November 29, 2012 6:17 PM

^Because nobody anonymously comments on the internet to say "I think this music is ok, and I don't really have any problems with the artist performing it."

Sample bias.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 6:18 PM

^I think the term you're looking for is "participation bias"

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 6:18 PM

Love her work, love her. That is all

Thanks for the recommendations!

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 7:35 PM

haaa all the 3EB talk in the AnCo thread reminded me that I made a can't hardly wait reference in this thread this morning... thanks for appreciating it 11:47

Bono wrote some classics before disappearing up his own ass. This huckster is just terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2012 9:30 PM

Hey, 4:38. My name is Greg. Now that I'm no longer anonymous, Amanda Palmer is still a hairy-pitted bitch without an ounce of talent, and I'm sure youre a very similar mouthbreather. And really, is there a hell for Internet trolls? Because I don't think heaven and hell exist, so I guess that's a completely different argument.

Go cry some more, you twat.

This is the revolution the hardcore scene has held as its most sacred prophecy, finally coming true. Uniting the youth of the world as one, to win the struggle to survive, fighting in the streets against the forces of corporate oppression.

Well I for one, LOVE Amanda Palmer to death. She is more than just a musician, singer, song writer & performance artist, she is also a hero and roll model for free thinking women everywhere.

Fck the misogynists. ROCK ON AMANDA!!!

Posted by Heidi | November 30, 2012 12:55 PM

Um, you want misogyny? Watch the video above.

'Heidi' is a Scientology plant

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2012 1:34 PM

I think her top picks are cute! C'mon you guys.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2012 1:46 PM

Call me Maybe...are you fucking kidding me? The only top 10 list that should make is Songs that Make you want to take your own life. If you're going to keep posting these stupid lists, please post them from people that actually have some taste. This dumbass makes Fred Armisen look like tastemaker of the century.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2012 2:22 PM

^F5ing loser....

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2012 2:47 PM

I love pretty much everything she's ever done. As a musician, she inspires me more than anybody else out there. Drove 7 hours to see her in September, and it might've been the best show I've ever seen. For a $20 ticket, she played for 3 1/2 hours. Her band is awesome, too.

The Regina Spektor and Ben Folds albums are top notch, too, in my opinion.

I'm willing to bet that the losers hating on here have never created anything even worth shitting on.

Posted by Nick | December 1, 2012 2:39 PM

^'Nick' is a Scientology plant

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2012 3:02 PM

Well she sure looks real "edgy" in that photo. I wonder how much she pays her stylists?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2012 3:53 PM

All of these anonymous posts are plants for the Church of Stupidity. I bet they're high bishops, in fact. Not that you care, but I'm an Atheist/Buddhist.

And I highly doubt that Amanda Palmer is a Scientologist, considering she's shown quite a bit of support for Kate Bornstein, who wrote a book that's largely about her escaping from the church. I've rarely seen either Neil Gaiman or Amanda Palmer post anything concerning religion, other than an article Palmer wrote about meditation for a Buddhist magazine.

Try getting your news somewhere besides Reddit or Digg for a change. You might learn something.

Posted by Nick | December 1, 2012 4:55 PM

"Pays" her stylists? Right... I mean if you had the chance to style a musician you admire, would you really be that worried about getting paid?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2012 4:56 PM

hey Holden and Greg, I was wondering what your non-anonymous last names, phone numbers and addresses are? Pussies.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2012 1:00 AM

Amanda Palmer is basically a theatre person pretending to be some cool "alternative punky" musician who spends more time working on her image them she does working on writing good music. That's my opinion on the matter.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2012 2:13 AM

1:00 AM - you first, brah.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2012 9:06 PM

I'm always so confused by the immense hate Amanda Palmer gets. Seriously, most people I know don't even know who she is, how is it that 85% of the comments I see on any article about her are so negative, and all say the same thing? Especially because her music is NOT terrible, maybe not your cup of tea, fine, but it's not like she's producing utter shit. Straight men are really irritated by women with hairy arm pits. I feel very sorry for Amanda Palmer that she has become the person pitchfork readers use to focus the rage they are actually feeling at themselves for being so fake.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 11:34 PM

Lol ;) The song "Call me maybe" brought me over some very bad summer days. It was the point where I thought I need to cheer myself up with some cheap pop music instead of heavy thinking - despite detesting myself for it. I was convinced that pop music is produced exactly to make consumers happy and I thought I could use that to myself as well ;) I am human, after all :P

I, I, I, I LOOOOOOOVE to find THAT song on this list - and yes, we are all puberty-hormone ridden little girls that cry at night and hide in the dark.

Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2012 6:43 AM

Putting "Call Me Maybe" on your list, wow, that's so ironically 'edgy'.

Posted by Dave | December 9, 2012 5:23 PM

I got my copy of Exhorder on cd from her when she came to my store to sell back a bunch of Roadrunner promos. Classy move.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2012 5:26 PM

Revolting talentless Scientologist Amanda Palmer is still trying to shove her crap down our collective throats.

Palmer cannot sing, play or write a song. She is disturbingly awful. Now she's cancelled her tour because no one bought her album, the downloads are accounted for by the Kickstarter "pledges."

Palmer doesn't talk about Scientology because that is where the publicists and Kickstarter "money" comes from.

And you better believe they are trolling this thread now.

Posted by Salute | December 19, 2012 9:52 PM

Hey Salute
She cancelled (then rescheduled-btw) because a close friend suddenly died and her best friend is very close to losing his life. She is choosing to be by his side over her career/tour.
Have a fucking heart.
And I bought her album. I am not nobody. Soooooo guess you fail there too.
Merry Xmas! :3

Posted by Bijoux | December 24, 2012 2:52 AM

Ps: if you call me a Scientology plant I will cyber smack your ass silly. Got it?

Posted by Bijoux | December 24, 2012 2:54 AM

Kudos to the guy who posted 13 individual third eye blind jokes. We're all rooting for ya, brah!

Posted by Hotspot Shield 2013 | April 8, 2013 10:56 AM

The Dresden Dolls were a freak show and Amanda Palmer makes Yoko Ono look like she's Yo Yo Ma. Amanda Palmer is a shrieking, stripping crazy person who needs to be on medication (looks like bipolar disorder). Sadly, nothing can be done for the tone deaf at this time.

Gaiman and Palmer's shows are funded by Scientology and the musicians they perform with are all Scieno friendly. Ben Folds (who should be on a watch-list for producing clams such as Beck, Lisa Marie Presley and Tori Amos) produced Gaiman and Palmer's 30 second songs, probably written while taking a crap. Palmer toured with Frances Bean Cobain, captured by Scientology after Courtney Love got her sorry ass into the clutches of Narconon. Moby, who refuses to discuss Scientology in public and Stephen Merritt performed with Gaiman and Palmer on Craig Ferguson, the Rock Musician's Graveyard, where other lame Scientologist Rock wannabes like Juliette Lewis can be heard droning on miserably.

I can't imagine Scientology continuing to bother with Gaiman and Palmer for long. Their half-assed performances are pointless. Palmer was never even able to raise money for a plane ticket or hotel, let alone an auditing session. Judging from their goofy, random performances, this trend will continue.

We all know how Scientology feels about money. Tick. Tick. Tick.
