Death Grips and the raucous MHOW crowd, 11/12/2012
Death Grips
Death Grips

After all of the false starts, Death Grips lit up a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (11/12) with support from similarly tongue-twwisted MC Mykki Blanco (who just played the Broolkyn Electronic Music Fest this weekend), part of their tour that wraps up next week. With only two guys, a drumkit, a pair of Macbook Pros and matching LCD televisions, the now-label-less duo (missing Flatlander) proceeded to stir up moshpits, stagedives and tons of bouncing at the North Brooklyn venue. MC Ride belts out verses at the top of his lungs, slithering like a snake, while his cohort Zach Hill pounded away on his modest kit. Brutal and totally fun.

More pics from Music Hall of Williamsburg are below.

WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHY

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 2:58 PM

I thought they were a three piece...

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:01 PM

This is one band I will never understand,

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:04 PM

Aggressive, noisy, strangely dance-able...what's not to like?

Posted by Steven | November 13, 2012 3:06 PM

did they have a backing track?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:08 PM

^ ooh, trendy double-exposure and color inversion. how #edgy

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:18 PM

what the fuck is this?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:26 PM

3:06: Their trendy "I'm white, but I like to pretend I like black artist music to feel like I'm accepted by some people from a race that isn't down with us, as we are uncomfortable around them" fanbase.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:33 PM

WAS THERE A BACKING TRACK OR NOT ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:33 PM

hey kenny sun of normalmag.com , if you wanna try and copy erez's style do it right and don't half ass it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:33 PM

3:33: Nobody cares, douche.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:34 PM

These guys would give you the shirt off their backs.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:35 PM

3:34 - OK KENNY

I'm surprised all these kids' parents let them out that night for this show.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:51 PM

there was a backing track. even for the vocals. the whole show was weak.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 3:54 PM

^ Nothing says "cool" or "edgy" like an audience full of white suburbanite mouthbreathers. Suddenly the fake "viral" marketing campaign makes perfect sense, lol. What can't you sell to these hayseeds?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:09 PM

@3:33 - Oh, it's about race...got it...yeah, Death Grips is the only thing I listen to with a black person in it.

@3:54 - I noticed a backing track for some of the really delayed/effect-driven backing vocals, but I really didn't notice much else in the lead vocals. If they were there, they didn't effect the live sound very much.

Posted by Steven | November 13, 2012 4:13 PM

@4:09 ...records. Shhhhh, don't tell Epic.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:25 PM

DOUCHE?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:31 PM

4:13 are you fucking stupid
durdurdurdurdurdurdurdurdur

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:32 PM

3:33 you suck, you fucking suck.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:34 PM

Nothing gay about this in the least. Nice tatts, wizard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:36 PM

forgot i had tickets to this.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:54 PM

@3:08, those are probably the worst live photos I've ever seen. The shots themselves are shit, and then it looks like a 4 year old over-cooked them in a photoshop first lesson.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 4:57 PM

@4:34 - Well that says it all. Go bitch somewhere else

Posted by anonymous | November 13, 2012 5:00 PM

I saw a couple of these guy's recent performances online and it feels hella weak without Flatlander.

When they played Coachella back in April it was the full three-piece and they fucking killed it together.

How am i supposed to lose my shit when so much depends on the backing track?

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 5:58 PM

i liked this better when it was atari teenage riot

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 6:02 PM

As much as I like Zach Hill, I saw a few videos of them playing live and it sounded like shit (and that didn't seem to be a recording quality issue.)

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 6:03 PM

get get get get got got got got

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 6:16 PM

This is really bad.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 6:35 PM

yall gonna regret likiing this, just like sleigh bells.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 6:51 PM

6:51 nailed it. Yet another flavor of the week with no substance. Are there any new bands in 2012 I should be excited about? Because so far it's been a shit year for newcomers. (yes, I know death grips have been around for a little while. i remember those stupid comments from Jelly about how they were gonna blow up the suburbs of Podunk, Iowa)

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 7:24 PM

All of the negative posts in this thread must've been from people who I fucking threw from one corner of the room to the other. I listen to Death Grips because they fucking rock. You can't base your judgment of a LIVE performance off of a RECORDING. If there was a backing track, I couldn't hear it because the place rocked so fucking hard that I couldn't do anything but try and keep my balance. And in conclusion, you look like a huge pussy when you post anonymously.

Posted by Scott | November 13, 2012 9:45 PM

Actually, i heard theres this band called odd future thats pretty awesome and they like skate and stuff

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 9:46 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 10:14 PM

I don't know about the music, but the lyrics are shite:

This band really fucking sucks.

They suck live.

They suck on the recordings.

They just fucking suck.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2012 11:55 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 7:06 AM

1:57 is spot on

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 7:09 AM

^ Patting yourself on the back for a comment you made is ridiculously lame. Also, no one talks like that.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 8:14 AM

set list?

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 9:04 AM

Technically proficient musicians (to an extreme), aggressive and charismatic frontman (visual) ... asymetric rhythms, loud, noise combination of electronics and traditional rock elements.

General theme of anger, rebellion, anarchy, and cacophony.

I'm normally one that gravitates to the music first and then the vocals... but when I saw them over the summer the vocals were the first thing that got my attention. That guy doesn't seem to have a grasp on rhythm. It didn't seem like he practices much (music) and so I got the impression that he relies more on image and message to present his art.

It just wan't my thing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 9:28 AM

he sings against the rhythm like dave matthews

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 10:08 AM

^^^ you think that is on purpose? Like some sort of musical rebellion against form and function?

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2012 10:25 AM

An IP address, or internet protocol address, is a string of numbers unique to a particular computer or device on the internet. With it, authorities can usually track the identity of the person who sent an e-mail or visited a website.
