Gary Clark Jr at ACL 2012 (more by Glen Brown)
Gary Clark Jr.

Gary Clark Jr., whose recently released an album, has a trio of sold-out NYC shows this week (11/4, 11/5, 11/7), but the Austin-based guitarist/songwriter has plans for yet another. Tickets go on sale at noon for a "minimum donation" of $20, though additional donation, canned food and household goods will be accepted as well. Give hard and party hard to some good tunage.

He was great tonite at The Bowery. If you are into blues rock, get to one his shows this week. He will not be playing places this small anymore.

131am How long did he play for? What time did he go on?

Thanks.

Sunday night show was very good and nipped at the heels of great. Crowd was up for it. Any critque would be song selection. Too many extended slower jams at the beginning, seem to take the wind out of the crowds sails. When the band did edit themselves on a cut from the new album, it felt like a breath of fresh air. And I thought the drummer was a bit of a lightweight. I listened to the opening act at home for the first time yesterday , thought I was going to get a lo-fi blues thing , instead , live, we got Josie and the Pussycats. If you are going the next 3 nights be glad that band is not your opener.

5th time I've seen gary...twice before in NYC last fall/winter and two festival sets this summer. Most of those shows ran 50-80 min max, while last night was a full 2-hr set (10-12a). Dude just kills it. Setlist was great...jammed hard on all 4 of the tracks from the Bright Lights EP and sprinkled in some of the newer tracks perfectly. If anything the show was too long. Crowd definitely tapered a bit at the end and many missed the 4 song encore. Can't say that's shocking for a Sunday night show after a long week for many, and especially because if you get sucked into Gary's jams, it certainly can take a lot out of you.

Moral of the story -- go see this cat. He's not the next Jimi, not the next Stevie, not the next Marvin. He takes a bit from all three (and more) and sprinkles in some Gary....a breath of fresh air.

2hr set woohoo!

"sprinkles in some Gary"

He could sing for the reformed Extreme?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 9:33 AM

les @ 850 - Solid review. I was surprised so many people were leaving before the encores. Too many idiots taking pictures and videos. I wish The Bowery would just ban it. Would've liked to have heard Travis County from his new cd. glad I went. May have to go to The Bowl on Tues.

933 funny

2 hour set? Thats fucking cool. Gonna go to the Brooklyn Bowl show, because those Bowery shows sold out real quick and I'm not paying StubHub prices.

"2 hour set? Thats fucking cool. Gonna go to the Brooklyn Bowl show, because those Bowery shows sold out real quick and I'm not paying StubHub prices."

Go on Craigslist you bozo. Plenty of people selling face on there. There were people outside selling as well for face. Bowery also put up more tickets last week and were selling at the door when it opened last night. Will be doing the same thing the next 2 shows.

Get a clue. What idiot only sticks to StubHub when looking for hard to get tickets these days?

To counter les, I have seen him actually more times than you and I love him but he has basically been playing the same set over and over. Yes he sprinkles in a few new tunes now but if you have seen him already this is not a must see this time around. Waiting for him to build his catalog a bit.

Also, sorry les, don't know what shows you saw last year but he played a good 2 hours at Mercury Lounge.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 12:07 PM

saw him at highline with alice smith and mercury lounge last year as well. mercury lounge set was about 80 min....much shorter than last night.

glad you've seen him a bunch. puts on a great show.

to others who havent seen him, and you can make it this week, make it happen.

1205pm Why would people pay $35 when you can get $20 ticket for Brooklyn Bowl!

Scalper

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 12:29 PM

12:05, hey fuckhead. 12:29 basically nailed it. Paid 20 bucks for tomorrow's show, so fuck off!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 1:07 PM

1205 is a dumb cocksucker. Yeah, go to Craigslist for Bowery tickets, where the prices are $40, $75.

Or you can just get Brooklyn Bowl tickets for only 20.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 1:12 PM

12:05 here. Seems like a few of you have reading problems. Where did i say go on Craigslist to scalp or pay some huge price. That is on StubHub. There are a number of people on Craigslist selling for face value which is what I said. The ones asking for large amounts are not getting that. It is what they are asking for. Try actually knowing the game you fucking idiots.

And no les you are very very wrong. Gary played around 2 hours at Mercury Lounge.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 1:32 PM

Also, yes you can go to Brooklyn Bowl for 20 dollars. Unfortunately Brooklyn Bowl is just a terrible venue to see a show in. The sound is not good at all. Certainly nowhere close to what Bowery Ballroom is like.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 1:33 PM

Hey 1205 maybe you can provide us links with the actual people selling tickets for face and then because I don't see it!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 2:13 PM

what time did he go on? 930?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 4:29 PM

You're lying out your ass 1205. Just hang it up you fuckin dunce.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 8:03 PM

are these all comments from people who work at warner?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 8:05 PM

12:05. This is a site for music fans. Why must you call someone an "idiot" or a "bozo" because they use Stubbhub, the largest ticket resale site in the US? You sound like the idiot!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2012 8:16 PM

"This is a site for music fans"

This site has not been a site for music fans for quite a while now. Thus the bozo tag fits you well 8:16

"This site has not been a site for music fans for quite a while now. Thus the bozo tag fits you well 8:16"

Most of BV's posts are about music. Too bad all of these smarmy idiots with their stupid hummus, Daft Punk, Frohawk etc jokes post on here. I still come on here for music news. Too bad that most of the people who comment know very little to nothing about music besides what crappy new bands their dopey hipster friends told them they should be into. Most of these bands will be gone before you know it.

As for buying tix, I've used Stubbhub a few times to buy tickets if I can't find them on Craigslist. Why? Because I can afford them. Yes, I actually work for a living! I laugh when people complain about tix costing $75. It's 2012. No one buys cd's so artists have to make a living. Get a job! if you cannot afford the tix, don't buy them. Someone else will!.

oh and 12:05, he played 80 min at mercury lounge. les was correct
