Animal Collective at Terminal 5 - 12/4/12 (via Ryan Bakker)
AnCo T5

Animal Collective played their first of two Terminal 5 shows last night (12/4) (rescheduled from their one Williamsburg Park show). They focused their set on playing most of 2012's Centipede Hz, but also included two tracks off Merriweather Post Pavillion, and a few others. You can check out the full setlist from last night below.

Traxman opened last night's show, and AnCo will do it again at T5 tonight (12/5) with Highlife opening. Tickets for tonight's show are still available.

Great show! The crowd was terrific and Animal sounded super tight and focused

Agreed! It was great hearing Cobwebs. Glad they are playing Peacebone again too.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:29 AM

People were giving away tickets for free outside?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:30 AM

what time did they go on?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:32 AM

seriously great performance.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:33 AM

set times?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:36 AM

They went on exactly at 9:10 and played for about 1:45. Show ended a little before 11.

Yes, there were tickets a plenty outside, including people giving them away. The upper balcony was closed. Definitely not sold out, maybe 1500 in the venue (3000 capacity). No problem moving around in the back on the floor.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:37 AM

How crowded was it before AC went on? Hopefully I can get there at 9 and just have a good spot on the floor but we all know about T5...

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:38 AM

they came on at 9:10 exactly. bring drugs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:39 AM

^ agreed.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:41 AM

they played three from merriweather, not two.

not crowded at all. could have easily gotten a good spot anywhere, at any time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:46 AM

boooooooooooo new stuff booooooooooooo

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:51 AM

Good show. Sort of a trade-off: overall weaker setlist than on the MPP tour, but way tighter, better sound.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 10:56 AM

killin it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 11:30 AM

See, Bowery Presents, you bit off more than you can chew this time. Good for you fuckers getting screwed on this one and putting them in that shit sound venue which they could not come close to filling. Should have been 1 0r 2 nights at Webster Hall and then this really would have been a show to see.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 11:41 AM

Yeah, really good show. Do bring drugs, but be careful with your paraphernalia as the pocket search is rather intrusive. (I put my pipe in my socks.) Sound was fine as it usually is there despite all the bitching. Whatsmore, the bathrooms are nice, the drink prices are reasonable (and the people who stand in the long bar line near the entrance are idiots), and they even have phone charging stations!

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 11:41 AM

"Sound was fine as it usually is there despite all the bitching"

Shut up deaf fool. So sick of the "sound is fine there" morons. Who reads this damn blog these days? Jersey frat boys? Saying the sound is fine there seriously is insulting to venues that really do have great sound.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 11:53 AM

The sound is fine there if you care enough to get there in a timely fashion and get yourself a spot on the floor. You probably are standing at the bar and yapping and not paying attention anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:01 PM

1153...what's that? a chip on your shoulder?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:04 PM

despite all the reasons I hate Terminal 5 (and why i didn't go last night and won't be going tonight) -- the sound has never really been an issue to me. the twenty minute walk to the nearest subway, the security, the horrible vantage points, the seamingly endless stream of annoying long island kids... sure. but the sound? i really don't know what you guys are talking about, it sounds fine to me.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:08 PM

^^annoying long island kids.....u must be "from" brooklyn

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:13 PM

^^and if you dont recognize the faults in the sound at T5 then you are a complete moron or dont get out much...probably both

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:15 PM

T5 is the best venue in the city, and I'm tired of this never-ending complaining about it.

Posted by T5's dad | December 5, 2012 12:22 PM

Everyone who complains about the sound at T5 tell me the last time you attended a show there and where you were standing....thanks!

Posted by C | December 5, 2012 12:22 PM

Yes, because dopes at an Animal Collective show in support of Centipede HZ know exactly what sounds"fine."

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:26 PM

Agree completely with you 12:15. To take you up on your challenge 12:12, I go to shows almost every night of the week. At least 4 times a week. How bout yourself?

Last show I attended there was Dinosaur Jr and I was close to the front where is the only passable sound area basically. There is no dynamics in that place at all. It is lifeless and after 20 minutes it feels as if someone has been hitting me on the head with a brick and not in a good "dino jr was so heavy way" I almost was pissing with laughter reading the comments in the review of that show here. Seen this band about 19 times over the years and I know when they are in a good sounding venue.

Funny how I see shows all the time in many different places and you see the same people all the time aka live music junkies who know what's up. Never when I go to Terminal 5 do i see these people. Also funny is when the talk comes to discussing this place, the only people who say the sound is fine are the people you never see at shows regularly aka the clueless.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:35 PM

^Not sure who 12:12 is..but since you are trying to compare. I see 80 shows a year...maybe 5 a year at T5. Sure the sound varies on the band and who is running the boards. Sound is good in certian sweet spots. I saw The Walkmen, Tragically Hip, Hot Chip, Bloc Party just to name a few in the last few motnhs at T5 and over the years T5 has been improving. Is it the best sounding venue no...not really but is it good enough where I can still enjoy the show...yes it is...

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:40 PM

Animal Collective is awesome

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 12:50 PM

Awful show. Played all the new stuff and then squeezed in the good old stuff as a f'n medley??

#Fail

I didn't even bother to stay for an encore.

Posted by kristie | December 5, 2012 12:57 PM

fart

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:01 PM

12:35 and 12:40 i see shows twice a day...so my opinion means more #occupy

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:15 PM

"Is it the best sounding venue no"

No it is one of the worst. Improving? Unless they demolish the place and rebuild it, it cannot really improve. Remember, this was not a place built for live music shows. It was built to be a dance club. Sound was the last thing thought about when constructing the place. Bowery did nothing to renovate it when they took over. Other than create more space for bars.

12:40, 12:35 has got your number there buddy. If nothing else, for the bands you listed. You lose just on that. Tragically Hip? Bloc Party? I think you fall into that category of "clueless"

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:24 PM

The new songs sounded really boring. Deakin was really ostentatious and I don't think he adds anything live at all. I liked Centipede Hz as an album, but live, really soulless.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:30 PM

I last went to T5 in March and the sound was nothing special but certainly not unbearable or grating like 12:35 proclaims. I was on the first balcony close to the stage.

Unlike MHOW which has sounded like absolute shit the last three times I have gone.

And unlike Bowery where it is nearly perfect every time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:46 PM

1:24. Maybe you are close minded. Please 1:24 Mr. 20 years to late to Dinosaur JR. tell me how clueless I am. This will be rich since you know me so well.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:46 PM

1:24 please for the pleasure of those reading tell me the last 3 concerts you have been to and what venues have good sound.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:47 PM

>>Last show I attended there was Dinosaur Jr and I was close to the front where is the only passable sound area basically.

You're too close, g. Sweet spot is a half to 3/4s of the way back.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:49 PM

Ha ha 1:24 Probably likes Grimes or something dopey like that

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 1:50 PM

Yeah 1:49 got a point. Ears against an amp won't produce great sounds

The sound sucks bc of all the annoying long island kids, it's like, just stay on long island and go see shows there, don't come into the city and annoy me at terminal 5

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:21 PM

How were Third Eye Blind? I heard they opened for AC.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:28 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:46 PM

^I'm going to make an assumption that he lives in a gentrifying area of Brooklyn and is from nowhere near there.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:50 PM

there was almost as many Jersey kids at this as a Bloc Party show.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:53 PM

^Furthermore, he resents long island kids because he resents anyone that doesn't make him feel like he lives in a Pratt dorm, but his upper middle class liberal sensibilities will only allow complaining about "trashy" white people, because classism is a handy substitute for racism.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 2:56 PM

The sounds pretty decent in the VIP section of T5 (the one thats on the balcony facing center stage with the step down) This also solves the sight line issues...problem is, everywhere else in that dump blows. If "Sound is good in certian sweet spots" is your idea of a good venue then be my guest and continue to frequent that sh*thole. Its now the bridge between the likes of the bowery and larger venues and as long as they keep selling it out, it wil remain that way unfortunately..

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 3:37 PM

2:36, 2:37, 2:38, 2:46, 2:50, and I guess 2:56, 2:21 here, grew up on Long Island and still live there ya dildo necks, you just been Clumped™!

i was vibing to anco last night until the fuckin beer guy cut in front of me as the band was playing to try to peddle his shit

terminal 5 is the only venue i've seen this happen

^^seriously, he ratted you out? Did you get tossed?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 4:20 PM

3:55 yes they do the same thing at Webster and it is annoying as shit.

And holy fuck 4:07, I was standing right by you at that Liars show and saw that happen. I could not believe the guy did that. I was telling my girl you should have thrown the joint in his face.

Oh and there is no such thing as a "sweet spot" at Terminal 5. It is either sucks shit or somewhat ok.

Bottom line. if you think the sound there is fine or good then you do not know good sound and should get your ears checked. Or just stop listening to all your music as mp3's on your computer or ipod.

I can't wait to see the Lumineers at Terminal 5 in February. Now that is a band folks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 5:39 PM

the first time i've gone to terminal 5, and i'm never going back:

- is it supposed to be fun to trek that far from the nearest subway station? i don't care how many times it's been said, i'll say it again.

- a budweiser is $7? bitch please. not to mention i don't need to be shoved out of the way by a beer vendor carrying overpriced piss while i'm trying to enjoy a band that i paid good money to see. i've never seen anything like it, and it reeks of a crass money grab.

- that place just feels way too corporate...fucking gross. i don't need some projection of an ad for jane's addiction coming up. fuck that band. i also don't need to be frisked at the door like i'm going through airport security. and what's up with the candy store in the bathroom like it's the fucking trump plaza? is this a manhattan thing? i seriously don't know.

- i love lion in a coma but i'd rather animal collective had not even played that song if it meant that 30 meathead jocks were going to try and run into me intentionally looking for a fight or to intentionally piss somebody off. is this the crowd that ac draws now?

other than that the band sounded great and it was a great show by THEM, in spite of the shitty vantage point that i had

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 5:48 PM

Animal Collective is yesterday's news

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 5:49 PM

Terminal 5 has the intimacy of Stalingrad, winter of 1942.

I wasn't aware there was an obnoxious beer guy at Terminal 5. Webster Hall, definitely. But I have yet to see this guy at T5.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 5:57 PM

Terminal 5 reminds me of that place Wayne and Garth went to in the first Wayne's World movie. Gas Works I think. The Shitty Beatles played!

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 6:00 PM

T5 rules and has great sound. Perhaps if you unwrapped the multi-colored scarves from all your faces (unfortunately), you'd people would get with the program already.

Best venue EVER.

Terminal 5 might as well be a stop on the LIRR.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 7:23 PM

I think there's a certain amount of subjectivity about sound quality and that we don't have to be calling each other names over it. Having said that, I wonder how people can say it's SO terrible there, I personally don't hear that. Then again, I think Radio City is by far and away the worst venue in the city sound-wise for rock shows, and I know most would disagree with that.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 7:35 PM

"- is it supposed to be fun to trek that far from the nearest subway station? i don't care how many times it's been said, i'll say it again."

Hahahahahaha to the guy who called T5 a modern day Stalingrad. Classic post.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2012 8:02 PM

AC should sample that volkswagen song from the mid 90s.

"da da da da, da da da, da da da, da da da"

Think about it.

Never been to Terminal 5 before last night, but I thought that was the best sounding Animal Collective set I've been in attendance for. Way better than Pitchfork last year or ATP '09. You people complain too much.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 9:06 AM

Everyone who complains about T5 Get out to the main floor. The sound and sightlines are better when you are not near the loud bar or the overhang and columns. There fixed the problem for you!

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 9:26 AM

"the first time i've gone to terminal 5, and i'm never going back:
- is it supposed to be fun to trek that far from the nearest subway station? i don't care how many times it's been said, i'll say it again."

Welcome to New York. Are you from that show, "Girls?" I really like that show. Thanks for making it.

"that place just feels way too corporate...fucking gross... is this a manhattan thing?"

Congratulations on your first time leaving Brooklyn. "Manhattan" used to be the place where kids like you asked their parents to pay their rent. Then it became not cool because evil bankers and people with jobs moved in. So all the cool people moved to Brooklyn. Problem solved.

As far as Terminal 5 being "corporate," one might call that a "capitalism thing," rather than a "Manhattan thing." You know, because pretty much any established venue in this or any city that isn't a Todd P show at Big Snow has beer prices and advertisements like this.

"i love lion in a coma but i'd rather animal collective had not even played that song if it meant that 30 meathead jocks were going to try and run into me intentionally looking for a fight or to intentionally piss somebody off. is this the crowd that ac draws now?"

It's the crowd they've drawn for about five years now. Perhaps you heard of the time they opened for Radiohead at All Points West -- a *festival* in *New Jersey* (I know!!), and played to thousands of people? Jack Johnson also played that festival. I'm sorry your secret little band that has gotten best new music'd on Pitchfork and regularly plays large music festivals has been "discovered" by "mainstreamers." Good thing Bon Iver still is "underground."

T5 should be knocked down and turned into a mall.
The worst Venue on the East Coast, hands down.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 11:36 AM

this argument that t5 is fine if you get there earlier and stand in the right spots is ridiculous. if the venue is sold out and everyone got there early clearly not everyone could stand in the limited decent sound spots. count me as someone who loves anco and didn't make the trek to t5 but would have gone to basically any other venue in the city to see them. t5 is just never worth it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 11:41 AM

11:36 ha ha funny..I have been to probably 50 venues on the east coast and T5 is not in the bottom 5. Ever been to Pittsburgh for a show...that's what I thought

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 1:45 PM

11:49 point may be a stretch but I agree I have been to concerts in almost every state from Maine to Fl and T5 ain't so bad comparitively!

The sweet spot in Terminal 5 is actually the seat in the cab you get into going away from that shithole

Posted by Anonymous | December 6, 2012 2:25 PM

Terminal 5 reminds me of Berlin 1945. It sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 7, 2012 12:38 AM

I like AC (for better or worse) but after canceling their last show and then setting up in T5 for 2 nights. I found that to be sketchy. Why do they choose to play T5? I was randomly at the opening party for the venue (shitty DJ, shitty drinks) and thought it sucked then as it does now.

You need to be right in the center to hear it best but overall it does suck. It's a concrete mess.

AC got really popular in a weird way but they, in my opinion, should play smaller venues to keep it more intimate.
