Paul McCartney at Yankee Stadium in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Paul McCartney
Dave Grohl at Deluna Fest 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Dave Grohl

As you know if you visit this site (or others like YouTube and Facebook), listen to the radio, watch TV, or leave your house at all, the huge 12/12/12 Hurricane Sandy benefit at MSG goes down tonight and it will include performances by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Paul McCartney, The Who, Kanye West, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Eric Clapton, Chris Martin and The Rolling Stones.

But what we didn't know, and The Sun is now reporting, Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl won't just both be at the show, they'll actually be performing together along with Dave's ex-Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and NIrvana (touring)/Foo Fighters/Germs member Pat Smear. Despite multiple news headlines that are calling the show a NIrvana reunion with Paul McCartney, it doesn't explicitly say they'll be performing NIrvana material. It's been reported that they will perform a new song and Paul also suggested they "just make something up." Regarding the collaboration Paul said:

I didn't really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said 'Whoa? You guys haven't played together for all that time? And somebody whispered to me 'That's Nirvana. You're Kurt.' I couldn't believe it.
Many sites are reporting that it will be the first time the surviving members of Nirvana perform together in 20 years, but Krist performed with the Foo Fighters in 2010 for a Nirvana cover and recorded on their 2011 album. It's hard to imagine anyone stepping in for Kurt as the frontman of NIrvana (they aren't exactly INXS, Journey or Sublime), but if tonight does end up living up to the Nirvana rumors, at least Kurt loved the Beatles.

In related news, Dave Grohl will be recording with Queens of the Stone Age again (but not touring with them), will be the keynote speaker at SXSW 2013, and is directing the new Sound City documentary.

A video of Krist performing "These Days" with Foo Fighters in 2011 below...

hahaha that would be amazing if they played Negative Creep or something

Awesome the Nirvana reunion we've all been waiting for

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 9:35 AM

How is it possible Paul McCartney had no idea who they were?

This seems like a better fit for Eddie Vedder, but I suppose Eddie probably said no since it probably hits too close to home for him.

Ha I think Lithium would sound great with Macca

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 9:38 AM

Should be a great show and will probably raise a lot of money.

Posted by Jackson Hewitt | December 12, 2012 9:39 AM

Sir Paul must be senile.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 9:43 AM

they are playing bleach in its entirety, should be good

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 9:45 AM

Jason Everman will be playing as well!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 9:59 AM

McCartney is so full of it. Someone should put that old fool in his place!

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:00 AM

my money's on "About a Girl."

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:04 AM

I wish Gangster Disciples (Chicago) would start beef with sir Paul instead of Rick Ross. Maybe that would keep the limey off our shores.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:06 AM

Say what you will but Paul playing Nirvana is going to be classic!

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:06 AM

It will be a Beatles track of course... the one that makes sense? Happiness is a Warm Gun

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:14 AM

epic 12 minute version of "moist vagina"

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:15 AM

Macca is an attention whore. He probably begged these guys to play with him to get his name back in the papers just before Christmas. Guy wants to sell more Wings records so he can buy more faberge eggs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:17 AM

This has train wreck written all over it. But I'd love to here Macca's take on 'Territorial Pissings'

"grandma take me home, grandma take me home, grandma take me home, grandma take me home, grandma take me home, grandma take me home" Paul McC

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:40 AM

I heard Mark Arm is going to play with Clapton.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:42 AM

The really should have Grimes do Cobain's parts, as they were each the voice of their generations.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:43 AM

confirmed:

they're gonna play "i saw her standing there" and then "rape me"

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:47 AM

Both McCartney and Cobain play lefty. It would be great for Macca to come out with a Mustang and pummel out barre chords.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 10:54 AM

Endless, Nameless

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:02 AM

Who is more washed up, Grohl, Novoselic or Macca? Pat Smear gets a pass of course because he is fucking awesome and he always has a smile on his little gremlin face.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:03 AM

"rape me"

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:17 AM

smells like ben-gay.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:42 AM

"Say what you will but Paul playing Nirvana is going to be classic!"

Only a total schmuck who has no clue would think this would be classic. Unless you mean classically terrible. No doubt Kurt is turning over in his grave.

I can understand Grohl doing this. He is just a sleazy whore clown who will do anything at this point but Novoselic?

Sad day indeed that Nirvana has come to this.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:51 AM

^ you are a Grade A moron.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:04 PM

"milk it"

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:10 PM

Not on broadcast TV (outside of NY)?!? I assumed it would be like the 9/11 tribute concert.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:25 PM

11:03, your naivete is adorable. Do shut the fuck up.

Dave Grohl just came off of the most successful 3-year run he's ever had in his entire career and headlined Wembley Stadium with Foo Fighters. Yeah man, definitely washed up.

McCartney headlines Yankee Stadium and Citifield, and continues to play 3-hour shows. Yeah, definitely washed up.

Please go back to the bathroom at 285 Kent and blow the nearest Diamond Rings look-alike.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:25 PM

^ha looks like he thinks Krist is the most washed up!

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:27 PM

Krist hasnt bothered with music in years. Doesnt he work in local government now? I doubt he cares what people think of him.

Very Ape into Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey into Monkey Wrench

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 12:40 PM

Eddie Bed-wetter singing Nirvana would make Cobain turn over in his grave. Not that this stadium-rock whore get together like McCuntney and Grohl would be any better.

Please Please Rape Me
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart-Shaped Box
Come Together As You Are
Smells Like Eleanor Rigby
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and Frances Farmer

and of course...

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 1:15 PM

I don't know if this is true. But, I heard that Chad Channing will back Billy Joel. They're supposed to play a medley of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" & "Pen Cap Chew".

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 1:23 PM

1:15 not bad.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 1:47 PM

McCartney hasn't released an album in 25 years. Who gives a shit?

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:02 PM

12:33 makes a good point. Why would some "local government" guy give a damn about what anyone thinks.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:10 PM

Coachella 2013. Full album, super group. No foo fighters tour in 2013.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:14 PM

Cobain loved The Beatles.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:22 PM

Guys, Cobains grave is constantly spinning anyway. I heard they buried him in a tilt-o-whirl.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:29 PM

2:22: I also remember hearing that Nirvana was kinda like heavy metal meets the Beatles. Sounded kinda presumptuous at the time, but I can certainly hear it from time to time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:31 PM

Gonna go by this to see if I can get cheap tix outside, if not I'll just hang out at TGIFriday's downstairs, maybe snack on a pretzel

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:37 PM

2:37 cheapest ticket for MSG $150...

Pretzel at TGIF in times square $25...take your pick ;)

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 2:57 PM

what a stupid idea -

A few more:

Polly-thene Pam
Maxwells Sliver Hammer
Pennyroyal Lane

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:16 PM

I hope Grohl sings. He could do a better job than Paul. Even with the Beatles songs...

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:25 PM

Yeah,Dave Grohl id a better singer then Paul MCartney (what a moron).

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:27 PM

Roger Waters to join David Smith, Bryant Mason, Brian Samuels & Chris Page at tonight's show.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:43 PM

I'm sure that Cobain would have loved for the 70 year old "happy beatle" to sing/butcher his songs.Or for that matter, his ex-drummer with his thin little bland voice and cartoon rage.

Now Thom Yorke or Michael Stipe would have been a much better fit,but neither is showing up at this belated showbiz shindig for a fading storm (You'd think that with Fema and Obama giving billions of dollars of aid, this much star power and Live Aid type record audience would be better served stopping the hunger and poverty rate in the city for once and for all).

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:43 PM

3:43, Yorke or Stipe would be even worse than those other guys. Scott Weiland or Michael Pitt would be interesting choices.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:53 PM

3:43 -fading storm um, ur a dick.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 3:54 PM

I guess NIRVANA finally sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 4:06 PM

My two favorite Nirvana covers are from Sinead O'Connor and Tori Amos.My point is that this type of celebratory jam-rock meshing fit for a stadium cant = anything moving. But I could be completely wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 4:50 PM

who is Macca?

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 5:10 PM

michael stipe is going to be there tonight actually

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 6:02 PM

6:02 then I'm not watching.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 7:12 PM

I heard that they are going to play Lithium.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 11:11 PM

that was great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:13 AM

Pink Floyd and Eddie vedder doing comfortably numb was the highlight of the entire show no doubt!

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:24 AM

pink floyd was not at the event.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 10:26 AM

cobain loved the beatles, but he also would've spat at the idea of the smiley beatle fronting nirvana. i mean, for fuck's sake.

"hey kurt! we're gonna chuck black francis from pixies and replace him with paul mccartney."
"i love the beatles but YOU MAKE ME WANT TO KILL MYSELF."

really, the only fitting vocalist for a 'reunited nirvana' would be courtney love, as fucked as that sounds. she has the vocal texture, and could hit the notes. and they would destroy hole songs as well.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 11:46 AM

^ that's awesome that you know what Kurt would think. Do you have cut up pictures of him on your wall? Does he talk to you in your dreams?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 12:26 PM

@1226 i bet you have cut-up pictures on your wall from when you liked yourself. and anyone with any common musical sense knows that liking a band and thinking a member of that band is a suitable replacement for a legendary band of an opposing genre are very different, almost completely irrelevant.

anyone - literally anyone - familiar with nirvana would spit at the term 'reunited Nirvana' because it is a ridiculous notion. and on top of that, to have the softest, clean-cut pop-rock legend in the world taking the place of the grungiest lead singer of all time? no brainer.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:57 PM

lighten up Myron.

it was not a Nirvana reunion. No one called it Nirvana, there were no Nirvana songs played. It was Paul McCartney and the two guys who were in Nirvana plus touring guitarist (on the last tour) playing a mediocre original song. end of story. except to say that Kurt Cobain probably loved Paul McCartney, just like he loved Cheap Trick. The man knew about melody too.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 8:47 PM

Paul was Kurt's favorite Beatle.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 8:57 PM

Ringo enjoys the hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 9:29 PM

Paul probably was his favorite Beatle. And Paul could rock no less than John at times, as John could be no less melodic than Paul.
that's why they were fucking Lennon-McCartney! That was why they were the BEATLES, right there. (love to the other two.)

Courtney said the most inane thing about it. "if it was John that would have been cool."

Grohl is an opportunist for sure. He doesn't exactly try to dispel that. He just does what he does and it works for him - drums with every British master or alt-rock pioneer (Page, Jones, McCartney, Bob Mould, etc. ) and keeps his own generic power-pop coming.
But he's honest about it.
Courtney Love can't handle it. She's done. Period.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 9:42 PM

can't wait to see it!!

Posted by Agen Tour Travel Jakarta Selatan | December 17, 2012 3:56 AM
