The stolen guitar...
Maccavana

Hi -- Thurston Moore had his 1966 (circa) Fender Jazzmaster stolen from the Best Western in Philadelphia (501 N 22nd St) last night 12-12-12 around 12 midnight. It's Thurston's iconic Sonic Youth black Jazzmaster with all the stickers on its body. Here's a couple of photos. A police report has been filed. Please email us if anyone tries to sell this relic to yur store, it would be appreciated. Please forward to other guitar stores you may know in the area.

Thanks,

Thurston

Be on the lookout! Additional info: "it has a Mastery Bridge, and the pickguard has been changed so stickers might be different. it's a 1960 serial#41927." Hope you get it back Thurston.

Thurston played SPACE in Philly last night as part of a short string of dates that included Union Pool the other night and includes an upcoming show at Bowery Electric. Another shot of the guitar is below...

Yikes. A 1960 fender Jazzmaster on it's own is worth a pretty penny. Add Thurston Moore's ownsership to the mix and it's invaluable. I could see that thing in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some day

I bet Lee Ranaldo stole it and wont give it back unless Sonic Youth reinutes.

Didn't J Mascis' Jazzmaster get stolen earlier this year? It's an epidemic!

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:13 PM

All bands get gear stolen in Philadelphia

Posted by AnonHUMMUS | December 13, 2012 1:13 PM

J. Mascis' guitar was stolen in NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:20 PM

What was Thurston Moore doing staying at a Best Western?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:20 PM

J Mascis got a Squier jazzmaster stolen. I'm sure he had some work done to it but that one couldn't have been worth more than 600 bucks and it was one of his own signature models so i'm sure Fender could have hooked him up. This one would be at LEAST 3-4000 to replace

Shoulda went with Super 8.

Gibson > Fender

1:20 has a good point. After all of his years with Sonic Youth, all he could afford was a Best Western? He should sue his manager.

I live in Philly, close to the Best Western mentioned above. This really sucks!

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:47 PM

^ Where were you at midnight last night?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:50 PM

the tone is amazing, i'm playing it right now

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 1:50 PM

will this affect Grimes in any way?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:02 PM

Yet another reason why bands need to stay away from the shit hole known as Philly.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:08 PM

If it was midnight last night wouldn't it be 12/13/12?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 2:12 PM

Punk rock, man.

Saw this guitar when Mirror/Dash were doing their '05 tour. Thought about stealing it myself back then, but there were just too many cameras

"Just another way of trying to say look I'm soooooo important woe is me wah wah wah"

I like how he had to use the SY trademark "cool" way of spelling "your". Even setbacks don't stop hipster artists from trying to sound "cool".

It was Kim. She wanted the guitar, but he wouldn't give it to her.

If you look close at the bridge of the guitar, you will notice a slight olive oil stain... It was a result of a hummus incident back in 2002.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 3:15 PM

I remember when SY had a bunch of their guitars stolen around '99 or so. Back then, the interwebz community came together and helped spread the word. True to form, many of the people who post here are showcasing their profound ignorance. Way to keep it real, BV posters.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 3:23 PM

Holy crap! Genuinely funny comments on BV. I never thought I'd see it again.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 3:43 PM

Still perpetually not even remotely funny comments in the loser pit!

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 4:09 PM

^have you heard the iPods joke?

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 4:34 PM

That stinks! Indie rock legend comes to town, plays a $12 show in a tiny space and then gets robbed. Just terrible!

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 5:13 PM

Vox > Gibson/Fender

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 6:02 PM

my band got robbed right outside the venue during our first show in philly (luckily all gear was inside venue and it was just cameras and gps stolen and a broken car window). literally will never stay in that city with gear.

Philly, sh*t town full of trash.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 8:10 PM

I lost my keys one night and had to divert the party to this Best Western. Anything goes kind of hotel and in all honesty we all saw a rat in the room at the end of the night. Surprised a living legend like Thurston Moore would be sent to a place like this. Oh well. hopefully his guitar turns up soon.

Posted by MB | December 13, 2012 10:45 PM

Proof that Philly is way more punk than nyc/brooklyn these days.

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2012 11:15 PM

"hello, i'm thurston moore. when i'm on the road, i only stay at best western..clean, safe, cozy. the even have a complinetary guitar valet. tell 'em thurston sent ya."

I think the guitar has had it rough and we should be happy for its new found freedom
I think it will spend the rest of its days joyfully playing out the sounds of Nickelback, Staind, and Kid Rock tunes.

Posted by captain controversy | December 14, 2012 2:21 AM

I hear that Kim and Cocco are laughing their fool asses off right now

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2012 8:56 AM

Did they mean to say his "ironic" guitar, instead of "iconic"?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2012 9:55 AM

Was the guitar actually in the room? If so, unless there were signs of a break-in, I would think it was somebody connected to the motel. If he left it out in the van or whatever, why do musicians still do this? It's like every other week we read these stories, just get a roadie to schlep that shit into the motel. Who steals musician's instruments? I would never think to do that -like do these guys follow them and plan out these heists?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2012 10:03 AM

Thurston's been hanging out with that hillbilly from HOF/Sleep, so my guess is he got reeeEEEEAAAAAaally HHIIIIIiiigh and just spaced it in the pantry by the microwave popcorn
