YLT

It's a tradition! Yo La Tengo begin their eight sold out shows at Maxwell's in recently-Sandy-ravaged Hoboken tonight, Saturday, December 8th, the first night of Hanukkah 2012. As always, each night will featured a varied setlist, a charity and a mix of secret musician and comedy openers and special guests. So far we haven't figured out even one this year. Any guesses?

UPDATE: Night 1 openers were a reunion by The Raybeats and comedian Emo Philips. Tom Scharpling made the mix tape of the night (they sell it for charity). The charity of the night was, appropriately, the Fund to Rebuild Hoboken.

The reunited Rascals are about to kick off a series of shows at Capitol Theater, and Yo La Tengo definitely like the Rascals.

Local musical opener and guest possibilities include Ted Leo, Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Thurston Moore, Stephin Merritt, AC Newman, Kurt Vile, Lee Ranaldo, and Paul Banks.

Someone guessed Big Dipper.

Andrew Bird, Richard Buckner and Os Mutantes will all be in town (as will Jason Lytle and Sera Cahoone).

Thoughts?

That's this year's new t-shirt pictured above. More Yo La Tengo tour dates are HERE.

titus is opening one night

Please don't let Kurt Vile open again. He's fine but seems to open for all of the 90's indie bands.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 5:26 PM

Marc Maron is in town

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 5:32 PM

bret, hope you're lying, smh

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 5:32 PM

That is a pretty cool music geek t-shirt.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 5:39 PM

raybeats.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 5:57 PM

That's a really long shirt

Posted by eyes(!) | December 8, 2012 6:05 PM

flava flav is opening tonight! yay!

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 6:05 PM

That shirt is badass.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 6:19 PM

What's the path to Hoboken look like? Haven't been since sandy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 6:55 PM

I'm going Monday. I'm hoping for The Stones.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:01 PM

Louis CK? Tig? Frank Ocean? Mac DeMarco???

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:08 PM

There is no PATH running to Hoboken. I am going next Friday and will take the bus from the PA.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:18 PM

Stones are playing Monday -- not a huge secret. Also, got new album yesterday -- short but their best in a long, long time.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:23 PM

I heard the iPods are playing at least one night. Should be a characteristically diverse set from them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:26 PM

Do we get to decide?

On another note, I shamefacedly laughed at 7:26.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:32 PM

Friend sold Monday tickets for $800(!) and $300. Who knew this event was going to pay the rent lol.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:58 PM

Not full Stones . . .

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 7:59 PM

My YoLa shirt's cooler than that one.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:12 PM

The Hoboken PATH will be out of commission until the new year. A friend of mine snuck down there and checked it out. It's gutted.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:18 PM

Why are T-shirts so long? It's annoying. Lazy garment makers one size fits all bullshit. It's like you're wearing a dress.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:20 PM

"Why are T-shirts so long? It's annoying. Lazy garment makers one size fits all bullshit. It's like you're wearing a dress."

It's your fault (actually you parents) that you are short. Don't ruin it for genetically superior people. Long shirts please!

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:26 PM

The Raybeats tonight, via YLT twitter

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:32 PM

It's The Raybeats and Emo Philips.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:32 PM

Who cares

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 8:46 PM

Yeah, I second the call for longer t-shirts. If you're short, just take some scissors and cut it to proper length. But if a shirt's too short, there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 8, 2012 9:31 PM

Hoboken got Randy Savaged

Posted by Hubert | December 8, 2012 10:27 PM

Bus on way there is fine but for the return to civilization it sounds like a prime ordeal.

Posted by ME | December 9, 2012 12:07 AM

"Stones are playing Monday -- not a huge secret."

You are a fucking moron. They are not playing monday and the person who said above not full stones was right. It is some members of the band and if it goes down(not for sure yet) it will be friday night.

"Friend sold Monday tickets for $800(!) and $300. Who knew this event was going to pay the rent lol"

Uh huh. Sure he did. We all believe you.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:02 AM

Uh, hate to clue in the people paying a tons to see the Stones . . . they are not playing tomorrow . . . it's Friday, and not the whole band.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 2:07 AM

If the PATH isn't working, how are the Stones even going to get to Maxwell's?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 8:14 AM

12:07 - Don't Let The Lincoln Tunnel toll plaza hit you in the ass.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 8:49 AM

Has anyone even considered the more obvious question, as WHY would the Stones play with YLT in a 200 person club? I love YLT, but the Stones are on a whole other caliber.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 8:51 AM

people are dumb..

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 9:28 AM

i mean, it's not that unlikely that keith would show up. Ira appears on an upcoming Keith Richards solo record. he played with a ton of 'indie' folks - jack white, britt daniels, jay farrar, dan auerbach, frank ocean and aimee mann. probably missing a couple. coming out in march.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 9:34 AM

Yeah, it's actually completely unlikely Keith will show up. You are truly an idiot if you even for one second entertain the idea of any of Stones showing up.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 10:45 AM

The Feelies are opening Monday.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 10:56 AM

"Has anyone even considered the more obvious question, as WHY would the Stones play with YLT in a 200 person club? I love YLT, but the Stones are on a whole other caliber."

The more important question is why are you falling for the troll?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 11:35 AM

Obviously the Stones are a "bigger" band that Yo La Tengo -- more well-known worldwide (probably not many Yo La Fans in South America!), more albums, a freaking magazine named after them, etc. You did not see Johnny Depp modeling his pirate of the Caribbean after Ira. But in terms of critical acclaim, and popularity in the area -- NYC, that is -- it is not clear who is more popular. Yo La sold out seven shows in hours and the Stones only sold out three. People need to stop hating -- it will be an interesting night, even if "The Glimmer Twins" only play four songs!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 11:44 AM

Are the rumors about the Ipods playing true? I know they are in town on Wednesday and Thursday . . . .

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 11:50 AM

so does anyone know how to get from NYC to Hoboken by mass transit given that the PATH is not running?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:13 PM

@1:13

Take the bus from port authority

@1:13

Take the bus from port authority

http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0126.pdf

it only takes 10 minutes and let you off close to Maxwells.

Posted by love the bus | December 9, 2012 1:29 PM

"so does anyone know how to get from NYC to Hoboken by mass transit given that the PATH is not running?"

The #126 bus runs from Port Authority to Hoboken. Get off at the 12th & Washington stop, which is one block north of Maxwell's. Buses back to NYC run till 1:30 a.m.; stop to go back to NYC is right across 11th St. from Maxwell's.

Posted by Dave B. | December 9, 2012 1:33 PM

is there actually a band called the iPods? If so, that is a stupid name, and probably illegal.

That said, I would imagine they are very diverse from track to track.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:34 PM

Just saw the bieber buses lined up on Sinatra Dr. I'm a Biebliever!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:37 PM

"But in terms of critical acclaim, and popularity in the area -- NYC, that is -- it is not clear who is more popular. Yo La sold out seven shows in hours and the Stones only sold out three."

dear god I hope this isn't a serious statement

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:39 PM

are the Feelies really opening on monday?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 1:42 PM

Whoever is writing the Stones stuff is a true comedian--the people who are refuting it instead of enjoying it (1:39, for instance) are sad.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 2:14 PM

AC Newman & Wyatt Cenac tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 3:00 PM

The #126 bus barely runs late at night when the show is over. If you are lucky, you can get it right away (and miss the encore). If not, it could be over an hour wait.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 3:06 PM

Chrife is playing with Manham.

Posted by Gritten | December 9, 2012 4:36 PM

Ted Leo and Eugene Mirman on Monday. Confirmed.
John Zorn and Kristen Schaal on Tuesday. Confirmed.
Lee Ranaldo and Eugene Mirman again on Wednesday. 80% confirmed.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 4:55 PM

What time did Saturday's show end? Was the bus still running?

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 5:19 PM

4:55 is full of it.

Show ended last night at 12:40, well before the last bus to the PA.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 5:32 PM

i just found out that only the black bass player from the stones will be a guest on monday

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2012 6:22 PM

Bus Schedule for 126 Hob to NYC:

http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0126.pd

I'm no fan of NJ Transit, the idiots who left all their trains outside during the hurricane. But they do at least post their bus schedules online. The 126 to NYC does run all night; to avoid having to wait too long, check the schedule first.

And then of course hope it runs on schedule - although at that hour, it should, hopefully...

Posted by Rob W | December 10, 2012 2:43 PM

2:43....by "running all night" you mean stops running at 1:30, right?

Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2012 3:33 PM

CORRECTION - that's right, the 126 no longer runs overnight - sorry about that mistake. It used to - but I guess NJ Transit and the Port Authority can't be bothered anymore, even though there's no PATH train.

Posted by Rob W | December 10, 2012 9:00 PM

double lol

Posted by double lol | December 10, 2012 9:03 PM

Rob W-Thanks for clarifying!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2012 9:00 AM

going wednesday....please no lee ranaldo, ted leo, or ac newman.....please!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2012 9:32 AM

What's wrong with Lee Ranaldo? Saw him at this event last year and thought the band was great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2012 12:21 PM

i like lee but ive seen him too many times over the past year. would like someone new.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2012 8:42 AM

Hoboken transport misery, continued: John Oliver (of Daily Show fame, the guest comic Wed. 12/12/12) didn't know the PATH wasn't running to Hoboken. Apparently he wound up in SECAUCUS before finally making his way back to Hoboken. Welcome to New Jersey John!
