Amanda Palmer

There were a ton of great New Year's Eve shows in NYC, but no doubt one of the craziest ones was Amanda Palmer's Terminal 5 show. The show began with a set from Jherek Bischoff (who also plays as a member of Amanda's band) joined by string players, followed by The Simple Pleasure (which included members of Amanda's Grand Theft Orchestra), who were then followed by Skella (aka bellydancers Belladona and SuperKate). Then finally Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra came on for their first set, which included mostly original material from Amanda's solo project and Dresden Dolls, in addition to the theme from '60s kids show Fireball XL-5 (in tribute to its creator, Gerry Anderson, who just died) with help from husband Neil Gaiman and a cover of Bat For Lashes' "Laura."

Then Amanda left the stage for a set by Ronald Reagan ("Boston's Premiere '80s Pop Saxophone Duo") and then finally the clock struck midnight and confetti cannons were shot off into the venue. Then Amanda and her band returned to the stage to perform Prince's Purple Rain in its entirety and a two-song encore. She was joined by John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig fame for two songs including Prince's "Darling Nikki" and a cover of Hedwig song "Midnight Radio" in the encore. During the Purple Rain portion. And before the encore the venue was graced one more time with confetti.

I bet this was the easiest show to have sex with a strange girl in NYC on nye. She'd likely be a little overweight and a little unattractive but lets face it it's the best option you lot had on nye and instead you stayed at home and wrote nasty Internet comments.

A little sad I missed John Cameron Mitchell but I avoid T5 like it has plague.

It was Amanda's drummer, Michael Quilken, that sang When Doves Cry, and her guitarist/synth player Chad Raines did the leads on I Would Die 4 U and Baby, I'm a Star. I'm not sure who it was, but there was a female vocalist for Take Me With U.

This woman and Bowery Presents deserve each other in the rip off soul sucking world of faux indie rock.

"There were a ton of great New Year's Eve shows in NYC" Really? I didn't see any "great" shows advertised anywhere. NYE in NYC has gotten lamer every year. One of the worst nights to out of the entire year. Just a big money grab by bars, clubs and restaurants. As for Amanda Palmer @ T5, that would be the one of last places I would want to be on any night. At least she played 9 great songs although I'm sure she butchered them!

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2013 10:39 AM

Oh, it's a man--duh.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2013 4:19 PM

I was there and this was the best concert i have ever seen. They were even better than Prince himself. In fact, I saw Prince way back behind the soundboard and his jaw was hanging on the floor.

No, really.

why does everyone here hate on amanda palmer so much? yeah, she's kind of annoying and can be an attention whore, but some of her music is seriously awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2013 7:43 PM

If you're starting 2013 at an Amanda Palmer show, the rest of your year can only get better.

Posted by Anonymous | January 3, 2013 10:59 PM

Don't fret: this nasty bitterness of yours will either clear up as you age, or it will give you the life you deserve. Either way, enjoy yourself, no one else does.

Incidentally, this is why this site has a slightly inferior reputation to YouTube comment threads and 4chan. Feeding the trolls, but fuck the trolls anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | January 7, 2013 2:04 PM

Hey, you.

Yes, everyone here who is hating, through the internet, on someone worth more both as an artist and human being than anyone commenting on this thread (and has achieved more than you will probably achieve in your entire lives if you insist on wasting them by acting like superficial, hateful spoiled children):

You can fuck off.

If you have any genuine criticism to make on the subject of this topic, make it. As a fan who spends time considering her work, I would love to hear intelligent, reasoned opinions on why you didn't like this show, dislike her music, or don't agree with the way she does things (opinions that you are, of course, totally allowed to have).

But I guess that requires using more than four brain cells, and feeding them with more than 0 information. It must be hard.

Yet this is why you and your presence are not making the world a better place in any way. You probably will just flame me as you are flaming her, simply because spewing shit on someone apparently feels cathartic to you.

But think about it, OK?

I didn't expect an answer by someone with sense of humor. I love this page a bit more now.
