The STone RoseS

I have to admit I did wonder a bit if enough people actually knew who Blur and The Stone Roses were when I saw them placed very prominently on top of this year's Coachella lineup. Then we just came across this Tumblr which reinforces the idea that maybe the Stone Roses, like Arcade Fire (at the Grammys) and Bonny Bear before them, are not exactly part of the mainstream consciousness.

P.S., as the above-pictured tweet reinforces, The Rolling Stones did not end up being a part of this year's Coachella lineup, despite that weird date that showed up momentarily on their app.

^love that pic, that girl looks like she is having a blast

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:14 PM

more importantly, who is blur?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:15 PM

What a shitty, half-assed, line-up. Kinda reminds me of the Lollapalooza '04 failure.

Posted by Tommy Two Dicks | January 25, 2013 3:18 PM

not being part of the mainstream consciousness is a good thing in this case (and most)

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:18 PM

FOR YOU I STELLIFY

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:19 PM

mrbabycakes is fierce!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:21 PM

Goldenvoice just pocketed so much damn money (that should have gone to Radiohead, Daft Punk, or The Rolling Stones)+.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:24 PM

The Stone Roses had two albums from forever ago so you can't really fault people, especially young Americans, from knowing them.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:27 PM

Somebody that looks like Morrissey that doesn't know who the Stone Roses are? Uh, ok.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:28 PM

Yeah, let's fork over tens of millions to Radiohead to play the festival for the ten thousandth time. Nevemind that they don't have a new album and the majority of their recent output is shit, anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:33 PM

worst.

lineup.

ever.

so much for coachella being "the" festival

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:33 PM

I'm sure whoever wrote that tweet LOVES this site and comments all the time. Oh and they probably live in Williamsburg

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:41 PM

best. line-up. ever.
Stone Roses are one of my favorites. Blur?! One of my favorites. Ok, yeah...I'm in my thirties. I get it that anyone under 30 doesn't get it. But check these bands out. I promise you'll enjoy them. I've been WAITING for the day the Stone Roses got back together. Sadly, I no longer live in California, so it's going to be hard to get there. I hope they put together a string of dates outside of Coachella.

Posted by jenny | January 25, 2013 3:42 PM

what year was the best lineup?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coachella_Festival_line-ups

2002...Pete Yorn, G Love, Jack Johnson and Cake. Killer!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:44 PM

can't believe GovBall is actually beating out Coachella with their lineup. the Mayans were close.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:46 PM

2003-2004 were the best coach lineups

2003 >> beastie boys, ben harper, QOTSA, Blur, the Hives, NERD, RHCP, Iggy and the Stooges, The White STripes, Jack Johnson, Sonic Youth, Mars Volta, Interpol, Primal Scream, BLUE MAN GROUP, Black Eyed Peas, The Libertines, Fischerspooner, Johnny Marr.

2004 >> radiohead, pixies, the cure, the flaming lips, air, muse, BRMC, basement jaxx, bright eyes, cursive, mf doom, the rapture, death cab for cutie, paul van dyk, crystal method, kraftwerk, the black keys, LCD soundsystem, the killers, dangermouse

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:51 PM

you must be on drugs.... GovBall? Really? You must eat hummus all day and clean your ears with your extra long ironic mustache...

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:51 PM

2004

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:52 PM

anyone who calls themselves a music fan and has never heard of the Stone Roses is a fucking idiot. The Velvet Underground were waaaay before my time when I was in high school too but since I wasn't a fucking idiot then or now, of course I had heard of them.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:55 PM

everyone is missing the fact that MOBY is going to be there. MOBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:55 PM

Stone Roses had a great album. I like them. People who like so called alternative music should know about them, but, 3:55, it is a stretch to compare not knowing of the Stone Roses to not knowing of the Velvet Underground.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:59 PM

Who the fuck doesn't know who Blur is?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 3:59 PM

Gary from Deathcycle would fuck mrbabycakes up. Pussies!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:00 PM

anon 333 Radiohead>Any band playing this year!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:05 PM

Stone Roses are not headline material. Maybe in The UK but not here at a big festival. Now The Rolling Stones......

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:08 PM

haters gonna hate

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:09 PM

3:59, since album sales figures are an indicator of how popular/well known a band is, and considering neither the Roses or the Velvets sold many albums here and how massively influential both bands are, I think the comparison works pretty well.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:11 PM

Coachella 2004 FTW

But Portishead opening for Prince in 2008 was spectacular

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:11 PM

Have gone every year but will be skipping this year. 2004 was the best but 1999 will always be the "best".

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:20 PM

Would be so much better to flame @mrbabycakes on Twitter where people other than the five guys that post as anon could read it and laugh.

Then again, most people probably don't know the Stone Roses. Then again again, most people are shit heads.

I'm in the minority that is a shit head who knows of and likes the Stone Roses.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:21 PM

I'm a total asshole who loves the Stone Roses.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:26 PM

I love the Stone Roses, but I am old as fuck.

I saw them play The Manhattan Center (?) back in the mid-90's. I think it was the band's first show after Reni quit. They just sounded off. Ian's vocals were lazy and the band had no rhythm without Reni. I wonder if they will perform better this time around given that it's 20 years later.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:31 PM

Over 30 and over the Roses. No thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 4:32 PM

Would have been cooler if it was Television who was headlining

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 5:00 PM

golden voice isn't even golden voice, it's live nation.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 5:06 PM

I went to spike island (google it) and I can confirm that the Stone Roses are one of the worst ever bands to come out of our shitty country.....

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 5:11 PM

Let's celebrate ignorance!

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 5:20 PM

what? no beach fossils?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 6:48 PM

511 a few posts up, you are a liar...

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 6:51 PM

If you really are a music fan, then you will know that The Stone Roses are the seminal British band of the last 25 years, Blur not far behind. The rest of the bill not fit to lace their boots. Geniuses.

Posted by Fools Gold | January 25, 2013 7:11 PM

It's the Stone Roses, so thaw your rock hard pussies and deal with it. Still no reason to deal with a shit show such as Coachella,.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 8:38 PM

If you don't know who Blur and The Stone Roses are then Coachella is the wrong music festival for you

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 9:46 PM

355 You sound like a total "fucking idiot" for making such a statement. Calling people names make you look like a fool. Not everyone is into bands from The UK that had a decent album or 2 over 20 years ago. They were never a very big deal over here for good reason. I can name loads of bands from years ago that many people have never heard of. So what.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 10:17 PM

anon 711 Does seminal mean average at best?

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2013 11:54 PM

it means they are the band that everyone bukkakes on backstage before, after, and during the show, 11:54.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 12:32 AM

Maybe Coachella shouldn't have booked two 'huge in the U.K., but haven't released anything in a long time, and are now reuniting' bands as headliners - though they're co-headlining the Friday, which is often the weakest day of a three-day festival.

And even if you don't know who they are, they're still better than Red Hot Chili Peppers - who really shouldn't have released anything since the nineties.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 12:56 AM

1232 Yeah, all over you!

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 1:44 AM

1:44, you are making me very hot...

Posted by return of 1232 | January 26, 2013 6:36 AM

"I Wanna be Adored" is a lovely song.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 7:16 AM

Simply put, if you don't know who Blur or The Stone Roses are, you have no right being at Coachella.

Posted by Rosesfan | January 26, 2013 2:39 PM

The Stone Roses are a band who put out 2 albums 20 years ago, one decent and one ok. I can see why plenty of people would not know who they are. Not everyone knows every band. There are plenty of better bands from the same era. I didn't know going to Coachella was a "right".

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 3:07 PM

I wish there was some magical device that would enable me to learn about new bands and stuff within' minutes of a search...perhaps when I'm not looking to learn about musical bands previously unbeknownst to me, I could use such a device for masturbational purposes as well...guess I'll just use this here thing to share my ignorance instead...>sigh<

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 5:16 PM

The stone es mi banda favorita ...
y soy de México e ire a california a solo verlos , bueno si es que puedo, y talves poca gente lo conosca en America , pero es una EXELENTE Banda (YY)

Posted by karina | January 26, 2013 5:24 PM

^^^ Where's that burrito I ordered?

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 5:29 PM

516 Unfortunately I search for great new bands all of the time but all I seem to come up with is mostly mediocrity. I just can't get excited about bands like Tame Impala. Phoenix, Passion Pit, Purity Ring, fun, Alt-J, Japandroids, Beach House, etc..... They are either rehashing old music or just plain boring. Maybe I should just stick to masturbating! Uh, maybe not stick...

iPods

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 7:41 PM

Golden Voice is not owned by Live Nation, but by AEG, which is about to be sold along with all of its stadiums/arenas/entertainment holdings for upwards of $10B.

Just saying.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2013 7:51 PM

Watch the "7 ages of Rock" and you'll see how important the Stone Roses were to rock music. They started Britpop and were the band that transitioned back to guitar rock from the emerging rave scene. As for Blur, whoever doesn't own a copy "Parklife" is not a music fan.

Posted by ben | January 27, 2013 1:13 PM

I'm curious about how many of these music 'hipsters' who are complaining about The Stone Roses would also list Radiohead as one of their favorites? Maybe you should educate yourselves on guitar rock before complaining...

Posted by ccc | January 27, 2013 2:31 PM

The Stone Roses 1st album was important at the time but they were surpassed by Blur, Oasis and The Verve seeing as it took them years to put a 2nd album out which was pretty much more of the same. They were barely noticed over here in the States. I don't hear anyone really complaining about them but the facts are that were a cool trend setting band but they don't have a lot of material. Maybe more people would know more about them if they had put out more music. I did get to see them in the early 90's. They were good but nothing really that special from what I can remember.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2013 3:27 PM

Fuck Fuck I wanna be adored. Decent song, but Fool's Gold will and always be there best.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2013 11:57 AM

Stone Roses are a great band -love how hipsters think they know music but dont know sh*t about anything

Posted by Anonymous | February 12, 2013 5:27 PM

They both still rock. And The Flaming Lips i hear are gonna do Roses 1st album this year from first song to last. Somebody get a clue.

Posted by Bill | February 22, 2013 3:08 PM

The first idiot said he wanted the Rolling Wheelchairs,I mean Stones. Has he seen one of their stupid concerts in the last 25years. The Stones are awful live and very sloppy, its just another check for them.
The Stone Roses have something to show, they can still bring it. Blurs singer for you hipsters is Damon Albarn. You might know him as vocals of The Gorrilas, get a clue. If you dont know the Gorrilaz either, just smash yor stereo(if you know what that is),most of you probably never have seen a record. it is useless for you!!

Posted by Bill | February 22, 2013 3:16 PM

Fat History and Pile tour huh? Add one 'of Shit' in there and you'd have truth in advertising.http://www.focalbox.com/6-system-networks-professional-mobile-radio.html

Stone Roses and Blur are innovators of music you hear today. Moby, Social Distortion, Johnny Marr, Lou Reed, New Order, Dinosaur Jr and Red Hot Chili Peppers are bands that made alternative/indie music what it is today. If these bands were never formed and branched out into their own unique style there would be no new, interesting music. You kids need to learn and appreciate why you have bands like Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, Two Door Cinema, Postal Service, Passion Pit and Franz Ferdinand who are ALL going to be there... i'm so stoked, got vip for the event... :)

Posted by Lee | March 8, 2013 1:13 AM

The Stone Roses had two albums from forever ago so you can't really fault people, especially young Americans, from knowing them.

Jesus Spiritualized sounds like ass with Kid on drums. You'd think he'd bother to learn the fucking songs

Posted by medafile | April 14, 2013 9:28 PM

I've never heard of them so I guess they aren't that popular or I just don't know as much about bands as I think I do. Could be one of the two.

Posted by mike | May 5, 2013 11:42 AM

Music (C) Silvertone Records Limited. Video, Who cares where the bullshit agreements take You? There's enough unlicensed VHS coverage to show this band was really something, live. Not only these 16 track demos on Spirit done to album.
