David Byrne & Questlove teaming up for a public talk at NYU
On February 26, David Byrne of Talking Heads will be teaming up with Questlove of The Roots (who’s currently teaching a course on classic albums at NYU) for a one-on-one conversation at NYU Skirball Center where “they will discuss what we’re taught — and how we learn — about music, and the way that our ideas shape the songs we create and consume,” as part of The Public Forum Series. You may remember that Byrne wrote a book on how music works. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
The Public Forum Series also includes another NYC event two days later at Joe’s Pub (2/28) between jazz musician Wynton Marsalis and playwright/screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
As discussed, The Roots have plenty going on too with two upcoming Prince tributes, including one at Carnegie Hall with Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, D’Angelo and more; and their annual Roots Picnic, which features Grimes, Solange, Joey Bada$$, How to Dress Well, Hit-Boy, and more this year.
Questlove, who DJs most Thursdays at Brooklyn Bowl for his Bowl Train party (he did a Valentine’s Day set last night), will continue this Thursday (2/21) (tickets), but before that, he’ll appear at Littlefield on Monday (2/18) for Wyatt Cenac‘s weekly Night Train comedy show. This week’s show also includes Josh Gondelman, Desiree Burch, Matt Koff, and Jena Friedman.
David Byrne appeared with collaborator St. VIncent on Letterman last month to perform “I Should Watch TV.” The video of that performance is below.
