Autre Ne Veut at the BrooklynVegan SXSW Saturday day party - 3/16/13
BV Day Party @ The Main & Jr, March 16th, 2013

Autre Ne Veut's great new album, Anxiety has seriously escalated his career, and it caused some anticipation for his SXSW shows, which included the BrooklynVegan SXSW day party on Saturday (3/16), where I caught him. Main man Arthur Ashin is now joined by Cristi Jo from Zambri on vocals and samples and a live drummer, and the show was definitely fuller than his earlier live gigs. The unfortunate part was that it was pretty clear that "Counting" is his biggest song (that one even got some hollering from the crowd when he pushed his voice as far as it could go), but hopefully the deeper cuts from that album will get better known in time.

Big thanks to our sponsors Oxygen, Best of Ink, Onkyo, mophie, Jameson, Zico, Food For Lovers, American Apparel, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, ReDigi, Signazon, Korg, Creative Creation, and Mirrored Media, who we couldn't do the day party without. A full set of pictures from all the bands at the party is coming soon, meanwhile check out more of Autre Ne Veut from that show below...

a self-obsessed dude sings about his inability to call his alive-and-well grandma because he's worried she will die and this many people go ape shit? I don't call that anxiety, I call that douchebaggery to the max. First world problems anyone? The fact that "arthur ashin" (does anyone buy that name, seriously??-- his real name is adley atkin, much more fitting of his impish presence) has gotten anywhere at all is yet another testament to the rampant breeding ground our culture has become for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The most pressing issues on this tiny-oz-behind-the-histrionic-curtain's plate are: his early onset male pattern baldness (notice the hats, always with the hats) and his extreme discord with his own race, class, and sexuality. He wishes he was black so badly that he has been unapologetically calling himself African for nearly a decade, using the flimsy rationale that his parents had sex a few times in Kenya during their peace corps stint before he was birthed in Raleigh, North Carolina. All you need to do to figure out his relationship complications come from a pretty standard-- yet totally way past the non-born-again timeline-- dysphoria with playing it straight but sensitive is spend like five minutes with him. Arthur Ashin? Adley Atkin? More like Badly Batkins. Totally bonkers. At least he finally learned to screech in tune.

Kelly

Who the fuck dropped a house on your sister, sista??.

I've got it Kelly, spurned lover, per chance?

Posted by Not Kelly | June 18, 2013 5:25 PM

Spurned, not quite. Burned, yeah. As in lost half of my master's thesis like a month before my deadline because dude wouldn't give me the files. Ended up with a shiny brand new panic disorder. Guess I had some trauma flashbacks seeing that face, esp talking about anxiety. I mean really it's a little funny. Thanks for your highly insightful commentary. You clearly know how to read between the lines, bravo geniuses.

Kelly, you poor little thing. Working on your Master's thesis and not grown up enough to store your files.
Get over yourself and quit blaming other people for your mess.

Aw, thanks? The sympathy is really unnecessary as my entire point is that Arthur Ashin's music is as contrived and inauthentic as his name. And the way I know that is because I was one thin wall away from the birthing of Autre ne Veut for an entire desolate Chicago year. Maybe I should be the one doling out sympathy, since you seem to WANT to be good at analyzing text in the way you might need a little more school to accomplish. Or maybe you're a friend of Adley's with just as much upper-class guilt. It seems obvious you also have some investment; more obvious though is that you have no idea what losing a years' worth of your master's work might be like. It's beyond humorous to me that Adley purports to have an "anxiety disorder" while also calling the therapy required in his master's program "more of an intellectual exercise than anything." From the other side of the self-deprecating smoke and mirrors, Ashin might more reasonably appear to have a personality disorder-- covert NPD. On another point, when your live-in, jobless BF has protools, recording equipment and nothing to do except play baseball video games and have season marathons of DeGrassi TNG and Battlestar Galactica, and YOU are working on a thesis that is half sound-installation, and have never even owned a PC before (imagine a time!!), backing up files is kind of a drop in the bucket. As he put it after we first cordially broke up because he missed NYC, he wanted to "try something new" and "go
Cold turkey" with our relationship rather than have another tension-filled friendship with an ex. That entailed withholding all the sounds we had curated together, from scratch, that were very particular to my project. I was a painter without a studio and our conversations played a large part in my decision to try new media. Collaborating also gave him a sense of doing something that felt a little more directional and productive. So again, the whole Anxiety thing is particularly choice and rich from where I stand. My stomach probably would have dropped a shorter distance without that name. The shock is over-- it's root even further back in time--and really it's a problem I have with pop-culture rather than its isolated products. Just because a dude can write tunes and masturbate academic rhetoric doesn't mean the performance and the talk create a meaningful synthesis.
