Barren Girls

Raleigh/Richmond punks Barren Girls formed back in December of 2011, and they've since signed to Merge Records, who will release their debut EP, Hell Hymns, on April 2. Frontwoman Carla Wolff sounds raised on Bikini Kill-era Kathleen Hanna, and they round out that hard edge with the garage rock organs that fill their songs. Like many great punk EPs, Hell Hymns doesn't overstay its welcome (four songs in under ten minutes) and leaves you begging for that full length. Or just hitting play again when it ends. Head below to check out the EP's closing track, "She-Devil."

Barren Girls were just down in Austin for SXSW and they'll be doing a larger tour of the US once the EP comes out. The tour kicks off with a show in their home stage opening for labelmate Bob Mould, and it hits NYC on April 23 at Death by Audio and April 24 at Cake Shop. No advance tickets for those shows and complete lineups TBA.

All tour dates are listed, along with the song stream, below...

They are like The Runaways, if they had stayed at home and used carbohydrates instead of drugs to assuage their sense of isolation and angst

They could play faster if they lost some pounds. Freshman 500.

double cheeseburger on the left too, to be more accurate.

Would, would, would, would, but wack that they have paid zero dues yet got signed to Merge Records (formed in Deceber 2011 and they're just putting out a debut EP now and just an EP with zero touring under their belts?)

Since when is this band "punk"? Cuz they all dress like it?

Play some hardcore punk shows not SXSW and then you can call your shit "punk" ladies.

WTF is with all these indie labels who wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH PUNK for over two decades putting out so-called "punk" shit? Sub Pop, Matador, Merge.

I don't want "true punk" women. I want soft, feminine, punk women. I want to bed them, not mosh them.
Fake D, you sound like you've been staring at Craig Holloway illustrations and touching yourself. That's why you don't want a feminine punk woman.

Whoa, this is truly some Grade-A 4th rate "garage punk". I really don't see them making a splash if this is all that they're doing. I imagine this will be popular with dummies who like Fucked Up or Off! for about 14 minutes or so.

she sounds more like jennifer finch as a barfly and this is bad.

Oh look it's the "Fake D" stalker following me in yet another thread. Get a life bro.

Wishful thinking on your part re: me getting off on Craig Holloway's garbage (what his illustrations are) and LOL that you are alluding to a guy who has done show fliers and posters for Black 'N' Blue Productions and record artwork for hardcore bands, you fucking closet homosexual.

Right, you want to bed punk women but can't because you're gay. Clarify yourself.
