bowie

David Bowie's new album, The Next Day, is out this week. With its "classic Bowie" sound, it certainly seems like the kind of album that would sound good played live, despite official word that he's not going to tour. But does the Thin White Duke protest too much? His guitarist Gerry Leonard said chances of a tour were "50/50" and now Bowie's wife, Iman, drops the strongest hint yet that it's looking like live shows are in the future. She told Italian mag Grazia (via NME) that she and the family won't be able to go on the road with him:

We have a 12 year old in school, so we are stuck, we can't travel. Our schedule is around her, so I don't know. We'll have to go visit him, but we won't be on tour with him because she's in school.
Let's keep our fingers crossed!

11:27 - why the Come On?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 11:51 AM

You guys are real funny. I saw Bowie at PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ summer of 2004(His last US show that he has played). Before BV and the recent new hype. Guess what show was half full. No one cared (I scored a ticket for $20). Now everyone cares and wants to see him. What changed?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 11:55 AM

11;37- it's a manner of speaking and not far off the mark. If he did something really weird like Lulu and a writer called it classic then yeah, come on.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 11:57 AM

like the guy in the 5000 suit is going to perform live on stage for a bunch of people who can't make that in 3 months...COME ON!

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 11:59 AM

what changed is that he disappeared since then.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 12:03 PM

which was a good career move

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 12:03 PM

Yeah, nobody cared in '96 when he toured with NIN either as evidenced by the half full arena when NIN left the stage and he as headliner took over. Then again he was a very hot ticket around '83-'84, selling out stadiums. Music tastes are fickle; maybe that's why he went away for a decade.

^

He stopped touring for health reasons. Maybe he just wanted to take long respite to chill and spend time w his wife and daughter.

11:27 -- its vs it's. i get annoyed. I'm sure someone gets annoyed that people who care about stupid shit like this exist, but I say fuck 'em, fuck 'em hard. a blog read by thousands of people should follow basic rules of grammar.

IF he plays a small club show here in NYC it will be a big ass deal and a very hot ticket, but if he plays a full scale cross country tour in larger venues, at this point, sadly, still nobody would really care and you'd still have half empty arenas.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 1:26 PM

Lots of artists have disappeared for a few years only to find themselves suddenly in big demand. Pavement comes to mind. The Pixies. The Replacements ended their career playing half empty halls. If they re-unite that will be a shit hot ticket.

If Dylan had stopped touring 10 years ago he'd could fill Giants Stadium right now.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 2:13 PM

@10:58 dream on. very, very unlikely someone as big as Bowie would play either of those venues at this point...

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 2:47 PM

Bowie's career not really comparable to anyone else's. he has nothing to gain from a "tour" (why does he care now if they like him in Jersey?) but he might not be averse to a few exclusive gigs in NYC or London.
