Eight years after their much-loved 2005 debut, Hearts and Unicorns, not to mention more of their fair share of label woes and personal hardships, Giant Drag have finally released their second album. (Is it just coincidence that this and the new MBV record came out within a week of each other?) Titled Waking Up is Hard to Do, it came out somewhat quietly this week. Spitfire singer Annie Hardy elaborates on its difficult birth:
So it wasn't the best PR move or in best interest for my career in general but I decided to stop talking about Giant Drag's album Waking Up Is Hard To Do until something was happening. People who talk about shit but never have anything to show for it are the worst, so I put my head down and started working. I found it somewhat easy to concentrate on work with most people I've ever been friends with for some reason thinking I am still living in Orange County.... Nope I have been in LA since May of last year, I was just a little too psycho to tell you about it! So yeah, I am back here in LA, doing my thing, seeing what works and what doesn't for the new me and wouldn't you know it, Giant Drag might be living up to it's nU grunge, bummer of a (brilliant) name and all signs point to a nice change of musical pace for me. I can't fake it, I don't want to. Giant Drag has felt like one big lonely abscessed tooth that needed to be pulled to make way for a colony of new, better, whiter, faster, catchier teeth to take it's place. I know some of those characteristics don't apply to teeth but humor me, I've been working like a dog with Ann Jones day in and out.Unfortunately, it looks like Hardy is ready to move on now that she finally got this sucker out and Giant Drag are no more. Hardy now plans to focus her energy on her Full Psycho label and other endeavors. (Read more about her plans here.) But there is the new album, which is full of Giant Drag's signature super-crunchy rock. No cat solos this time but plenty of hooks, acerbic humor and attitude. You can stream the whole thing below.

It's pretty good, but nowhere near as catchy as the 1st album or the EP that came out a couple years ago. I like how her voice sounds a lot more raw here

Wow how brave you are when you post anonymous comments? Great job angry 20 somethings really the future is looking bright with you leading in your incredibly entitled way! The truth is you are jealous and that is why you spout off like this. Only someone with a very large lack of self confidence needs to go on the internet and talk shit about someone they don't know and some song they barely listened to. So here the other side of that. Do you have any idea how difficult/impossible it is to make it in the music business these days? I doubt any of you cowards would have half the balls that she does to put herself and the music she makes out there, and actually have it paid attention to! As for advertising, guess what? That's the only way bands can make any money these days thanks to entitled little turds like you that say "records should be free". Guess what? Recording, Mixing, Mastering, printing and distribution are not free at all! But still the $10 which is less than an appetizer is just out of your entitled little price range isn't it?. This is good music by the way, it might confuse you to hear an actually song rather than just a bunch of video game noises to a drum machine but I suggest you give it another listen.

Hey 11:17, you obviously have too much time on your hands for a 40 something & take this indie blog much too seriously. Get a grip.

I might be old, but this never gets old to me.

I have this funny idea that the old model, where the record companies gatekeepers crap like this and prevented every schmuck who thought they could make a record from embarrasing themselves, actually worked.

I love when people bring up the EXORBITANT price of recording and mixing. Yeah, that's true if you are beyonce, but also half of these indie farts do not even put in close to 50k or even 100k, and yet expect to be paid back 4 times their investment. Now that's a ridiculous thing to ask for with a POOR investment.

11:17 -- In the time it took you to copy-paste your diatribe on 10 different posts, I made snide comments on 20 of them. If ya can't keep up, don't run with the big dogs.
Also, just a straight up "FUCK YOU" -- you seem like a herb and I hope you choke on your dad's cock. Peace!
