“On May 1 the Brooklyn Masonic Temple will welcome a host of artists to participate in a unique evening of live improvisation. No Wave pioneer James Chance, Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, ?uestlove of The Roots, Grammy Award-winning jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth fame, and Parliament Funkadelic founding member Bernie Worrell are among the more than 20 artists slated to perform together on stage. The show is part of the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy festival that will touch down in New York from April 28 to May 31 with an unprecedented series of 37 concerts, club nights and special events in 34 venues around town.”

ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY’S
‘A NIGHT OF IMPROVISED ROUND ROBIN DUETS’
WITH UNDEAD MUSIC SERIES

Unexpected musical encounters and a wide range of sounds from the realms of jazz, electronic, rock and experimental are the order of the evening. Curated by the Red Bull Music Academy, Search and Restore, Boom Collective and the creative minds behind the Undead Music Series, the night will see each musician collaborate with two different artists.

The format will see one musician starting things off with a solo improvisation lasting five minutes. Another musician then will join for five minutes of duo improvisation. After those five minutes, musician #1 will leave the stage and musician #3 will join musician #2 for another five minutes, and so on.

The night is opened by a live performance from 2013 Academy participant, Jameszoo (Rwina Records).

The lineup of performers so far includes:

Andrew W.K. – Michigan-born rock musician and improvising pianist
Bernie Worrell – Founding member of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic
DJ Spinna – Vetted hip hop and house producer and the mind behind the infamous Wonder-full parties
Don Byron – Pulitzer Prize-nominated jazz clarinetist and composer
Dosh – Percussionist, composer and Andrew Bird collaborator
Erik Friedlander – Cellist known for his collaborations with artists like John Zorn and Laurie Anderson
Glenn Kotche – Wilco drummer, known for introducing home-made percussion into his sound
James Chance – Key figure in the 70s No Wave movement and leader of James Chance & The Contortions
Joe Lovano – Grammy Award-winning post-bop jazz saxophonist
Julia Holter – Avant singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for RVNG and Domino Records
Kim Gordon – Vocalist, guitarist, bassist and founding member of Sonic Youth
Mary Halvorson – Brooklyn-based guitarist that has been called the “future of jazz” by AllAboutJazz.com
Matana Roberts – Jazz saxophonist and collaborator with the likes of Prefuse 73 and TV On The Radio
Thundercat – Maverick bassist and solo artist on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label
?uestlove – Drummer, producer, DJ, Red Bull Music Academy lecturer and musical backbone of The Roots
