Monster Island

Williamsburg DIY spot Monster Island has been closed since October 2011 but today it's really gone -- the building on Metropolitan Ave at the river (which also held Secret Project Robot which found a new home) is being demolished as we speak. The intsagram above was taken by OJ of XRay Eyeballs and you can still see the SPR art on the walls. Sad.

Man, I will always remember those awesome shows I saw there... Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Oneida, Strapping Fieldhands, and others...

what's coming, a massive glass and steel skyscraper of condos for rich yuppies, wall streeters and Euro-trash?

typical.

Is Monsters Inc. still there?

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 3:26 PM

my friend got drunk at a tyvek show here and then tried to dial a girl's back like a pay phone. memories :(

ex models, drunkdriver, fat worm of error, etc etc etc

someday someone will make a coffee table book about this space and people who were too square to go there in the first place will buy it and strategically place it in their apartment

total bummer; that was a great space and they always had interesting stuff going on. guess that riverfront property was just too valuable to developers.......

I read the book "monster island" but i don't think it is related to this place

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 6:20 PM

first they came for the venues . . .

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 6:51 PM

Fuck Williamsburg it's becoming a soulless hellhole.

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 6:54 PM

^becoming? It already is

Posted by Anonymous | March 13, 2013 7:33 PM

then they came for Sweetwater. I remember that shit.

If someone makes a book about that place they should figure out a better way to waste time. Play video games or something. Jeez.

I can still see most of the bands mentioned in the comments above elsewhere and have a better time of it. So that feels pretty good, knowing that I won't have to contend with the people who posted those comments and their stupid behavior and gross bodily secretions.

Monster Island = Solyndra

Posted by Stacy | March 14, 2013 12:29 AM

Thats pretty sad.
One day very soon that area will look just like Battery Park City and Gantry park LIC.
Next comes the Bed Bath & Beyond, more Duane Reades, and rightwing randian Whole Foods.

Nice shot OJ!

Anyone else remember when Todd P. first starting throwing shows in the basement of that space before anybody had even come up with a name for it? I remember seeing a kick ass show with The Occasion (R.I.P.) in that basement.

Just put a $1.2MM down payment on my new luxury condo to be built on that spot, so this is a good day for me.

Just signed another lease in the neighborhood. Far less enthusiastic than I was half a dozen years ago. I really really hope developers don't totally Murray Hill the shit out of Williamsburg. Greed is not good.
