The Men @ Bowery Ballroom
The Men

Beginning with an extended drone, The Men banged out one note with a noticeable nervous tension. All that revving of engines finally erupted in "Electric" off the band's New Moon which was released this week. The crowd went mental in turn with flying beers and bodies. Followed by burner "Without a Face," The Men kept the energy on high. And then, like on much of the new LP, they morphed into Crazy Horse mode with big, crunchy jams. While jarring, it works better live than on record. "I Saw Her Face" sounds absolutely huge at Bowery and that sense of grandiosity doesn't come across on New Moon. I still prefer the band in Punk mode, but, like Montreal's Besnard Lakes, they understand the power of dynamics and scale. Maybe Jace Lasek should produce their next record?

Last night's sold-out Bowery Ballroom show (3/7) was an all-around solid-as-a-rock bill. Openers Parquet Courts had the place packed from the start. "We haven't played a show in Manhattan since getting kicked out of Cake Shop," joked Andrew Savage who, along with the rest of the band, hopped on a plane this morning to Mexico City where they play tonight. (They play Festival Nrml in Monterrey, Mexico, on Saturday [3/9]). Their set got off to a rough start but soon course-corrected with a succession of their short, sharp cuts off Light Up Gold.

Brooklyn's Nude Beach held the undercard slot and knocked out catchy tune after catchy tune. Not only do they look like they could be from Minneapolis in 1984 (snapshirts, flannel and denim), they sound like it too: anthemic, punky powerpop, all hooks and no B.S. Quality stuff. For those not heading to Austin next week for you-know-what, Nude Beach are playing Union Pool on March 13 with Call of the Wild, Tweens and What Next?

Meanwhile, Parquet Courts next NYC show will be at Bowery again on April 20 this time opening for Iceage and White Lung (tickets). The Men will be back in NYC for The Northside Festival.

does anybody know if the young girl that took the unbelievably bad spill down the stairs to the smoking door ever got up, is alive, is hopefully miraculously okay?
frightening shit. happened 2 minutes before the set.
was not looking good, don't think she moved after hitting the floor, not an inch.

Blog rock for publicists

Saw the girl who took the jarring dive. Paramedics came quickly, she was put on a stretcher and lifted out the first floor door - her mouth was pretty gnarled and bloody but she was definitely alive and breathing. But yeah, saw there when she took that spill - it was a scary thud. She didn't move let alone show a sign of life for a solid five to ten minutes.

But she's alive.

I found last nights show to be incredibly disappointing. Parquet Courts was the only moment that was not only enjoyable but exceeded expectation. Nude Beach was good but not exciting...I want to say, having seen The Men before, that they were lackluster and missed a fullness that I had enjoyed on pervious occasions. But I can't truly say much because four songs into their set I left.
I left the show because I had the unfortunate fate of standing where The Mens entourage ended up walking over to as they began playing. Not only were they so fucked up that two of them spilled beer all over me, but one of them even pushed me out of the way to get in front so that she could dance in a way that seemed she was hallucinating the return of Christ all while her flailing arm smacked me in the face from behind. She proceeded to drink my beer and began chat-slurring with the near photog about the show they both saw in LA-- though she embarrassingly thought his name was something completely different.
Word to the wise for those with friends in bands...your behavior is a reflection of your talented friends, you should be trying to let the crowd to enjoy the show, not ruin it for them.

Dear BrooklynVegan, STOP blocking comments about Ben Greenberg's defense of his rapist friend Jeremy Villalobos (Drunkdriver, Pygmy Shrews).

that, "but you didn't do anything to help", is pretty much the, "your mom," in these cases.
cool, bc i thought she was either dead or paralyzed, from what i could see as they were clearing out the area.

austin from parquet courts made that statement about playing manhattan. also, the first song after the drone by the men was () not Electric.

4:13, 5:21 pushed that girl down the stairs. I saw it. She was asking for it, though, what with her slurred speech and forgetting people's names. That photographer was from LA. They don't take that lightly there, it's not at all how they roll.
