Governors Ball 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Governors Ball

Though Guns N Roses being announced as the third headliner and related "YOLO" Facebook messages were the most discussed and controversial topics when one of NYC festival Governors Ball's promoters hopped in a Reddit chat yesterday (4/3), we also learned that: Miguel dropped off the festival; the promoters were trying to land Atoms for Peace (whose tour instead brings them to NYC for a Barclays Center show on 9/27); Cut Copy and Kendrick Lamar are playing at the same time on the Saturday of the fest, and there are unannounced afterparties. "Stay tuned for epic shows at Brooklyn Bowl, MHOW, Gramercy, Glasslands, and Irving Plaza." That quote and more over at Reddit.

Governors Ball goes down on Randall's Island from June 7 - 9 and also includes a number of other artists like Kanye West, Nas, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Feist, Beach House, Animal Collective, Erykah Badu, Death from Above 1979, Crystal Castles, Best Coast, Dirty Projectors, DInosaur Jr., Japandroids, Alt-J, Deerhunter, Fucked Up, and many more. 3-Day passes are still available and tickets for individual days are now on Friday (4/5) at 11 AM.

Meanwhile you can catch Guns N Roses tribute band, Mr. Brownstone (no stranger to the pages of BrooklynVegan) at Brooklyn Bowl on May 18 (tickets).

We recently gave you a list of artists we're excited to see at the festival, and though that list already included Deerhunter, we're even more excited to see them after their recent Fallon performance. If you missed the awesomeness of that (which also included debuting their new single, Monomania), you can watch the video below.

This festival is such a waste of $$$ if you live in NYC. Deerhunter/Dinosaur Jr @ MHOW!

All fine and dandy but being trapped on Randall's Island gets me claustrophobic. Also, Kings of Leon will bring out lots of cargo-shorted doofuses. Pass!

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 12:51 PM

do not care about who the festival was trying to land haha

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 12:51 PM

In their AMA they said Randall's Island has a strick 11PM curfew and the NYPD shut Kid Kudi down last year for going over. There is no way Axel Rose will get to walk on the stage. This is going end really badly.

I'd be 100% down with GNR missing their set due to curfew; don't wanna see them anyway and that has 'refund' written all over it.

Overlapping sets = really fucking weak

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 2:06 PM

Hope Japandroids and Dinosaur Jr. do afterparty shows or something, would love to see them again but not at this shitty festival.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 2:18 PM

funny that none of the proposed headliners that the guy said had scheduling conflicts (Atoms for Peace, the Strokes, Deadmau5) have shows within a month of Gov Ball.

I guess 'scheduling conflicts' is festival talk for 'asked too much money'?

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 2:19 PM

159 or you can catch Nas on the other stage during GNR.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 2:24 PM

@219 - AFP obv already had Barclays fall show on the books, Strokes aren't playing shows at all, and who cares about Mau5...

Hate Randall's Island or the Govern's Ball lineup but still want to hang out outside and hear music and have fun? Mountain Jam on Hunter Mountain takes place this same weekend. Primus, Gov'T Mule, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Widespread Panic amongst many others. 4am curfew. Camping. Hula Hoop Girls. Drugs. The Karma Car Wash. It's affordable priced and worth every penny. I loved it there last year. Don't think for a second that Governers Ball is the only festival happening that weekend.

re. overlapping sets

There's an old joke ~ two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of them says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know, and such small portions."

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 2:30 PM

It's a bummer about the overlapping sets. I prefer last year's set up where the audience had the opportunity to catch every act. I also wonder how much the sound from one stage will bleed into another. For example, any band playing opposite to The Xx will likely be heard.

AFP's show is in late september, so that's not the reason. Kendrick has 3+ nyc-area shows and he's still performing.

Re: the strokes - kanye isn't touring either, so that's not the reason.

re: deadmau5, yea i dont care

Re 2:19
Atoms for Peace's US tour was originally planned for june/july. When they postponed it till September they cancelled plans for Govball, cuz why would they waste rehearsal time and travel to NY for a one off

i'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. at all.

Still sounds like the result of a lowball offer on the part of Gov Ball. Otherwise, I really doubt they would even mention travel time as a mitigating factor, since they aren't playing any dates within 25 days of gov ball. And rehearsal doesn't even make sense - if anything, the Gov Ball date would enhance their rehearsal routine.

Live Nation probably offered them more $ to play Barclays.

Kanye talks over a backing track. The Strokes are a band. Little bit of a difference here.

It's reading comments by people who don't have a fucking clue what they're talking about...yay!

little to no difference w/r/t booking the act for a festival. if you think the strokes have more equipment or a longer rider than kanye, you should check yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 4:47 PM

Hey, I work with Gov Ball. Quick thoughts:

AFP backed out of Gov Ball and Bonnaroo due to a family obligation with one of the band members. They thus pushed US tour to the Fall.

The Strokes are not doing ANY live dates in support of their new record. (Sad).

Mau5 is doing arenas in the fall.

Thanks!

"The Strokes are not doing ANY live dates in support of their new record. (Sad)."

dang, so the break-up is more or less official?

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 4:58 PM

@458 - nothing is official, but it appears they're simply fulfilling their record label obligations...

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 5:00 PM

i mean, that video for 'All the Time' wasn't a good sign; it screamed "we're breaking up after this shit"

I assume they all still hate each other?

"3 DAY TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT. wow"

thank christ, as if i'd want to spend $300 to be stuck on an island with a bunch of frat boys

i'm calling another deerhunter date announced at some point

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 6:00 PM

Does any one know where you get tickets for face value instead of paying exorbitant fees ?

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 6:40 PM

"Does any one know where you get tickets for face value instead of paying exorbitant fees ?"

tix on stubhub are below face right now. buying from the gov ball site cost $240 and change after fees - stubhub has them for $220 plus $5 for e-shipping and $15 for SH fees.

Day by day breakdown HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2013 11:29 PM

^no it hasnt. why even say that if it aint on the website?

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 12:41 AM

Everyone was in except for Julian re: Strokes. Offer was 1 million for the band and they couldnt convince him to do it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 4:28 AM

IT IS ON THE WEBSITE. look harder

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 7:34 AM

oh bloody hell, just paste the link already: http://lineup.governorsballmusicfestival.com/?sort=day

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 8:35 AM

It's not like this was a real sellout of 3 day passes. They simply stopped selling them right before putting the day passes on sale.

If day pass sales are weak I wonder if they'll put more 3 day passes up on sale again?

I'm only really interested in Sunday, but if prices crash on Stubhub week of the festival and I have no other plans, why not?

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 10:39 AM

3-day passes are actually gone, not fake-gone. and sunday will be gone by next week, for sure.

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2013 11:49 AM
