Jeff Hanneman

Invisible Oranges has the details on a song by Black Flag, the version featuring Greg Ginn and Ron Reyes, titled "Down in the Dirt" and will be on their forthcoming LP. They also fired a shot across the bow at that "other" band (meaning FLAG):

"not to be confused with the 'fake' Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak "mailing it in" fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area.
Keep it classy.

You can download the new Black Flag song "Down in the Dirt" for the price of your email address here. You can stream it, alongside updated tour schedule, below.

Both acts are so fucking dumb. Black Flag are more of a logo than a band these days.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 7:49 PM

those riffs are insane, imagine if rollins was singing

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 7:51 PM

This is terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 7:56 PM

Oh, Greg Ginn, what have you done?

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:07 PM

Is there any reason why you would not change the band name? Black Flag died in the 1980s. They died after Slip It In, actually.

Anything else? Flag or Black Flag? Betrays the entire principle upon which the band was originally founded.

Ultimately totally ridiculous though highly effective in getting me to not ever want to think about the band ever again.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:07 PM

The song is not bad though.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:08 PM

Worse than austra

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:12 PM

Keith is the only singer they had that was worth listening to you. Hank is way better at speaking then he ever was at singing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:15 PM

"they died after slip it in"

no douche, they died when Greg quit in late 86. retard.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:31 PM

ill take keith morris any day.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:41 PM

reyes sounds awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 8:44 PM

Like Greg's playing here. Not much else tho.

Posted by Anonymouse | May 2, 2013 8:48 PM

This isn't bad-- but when i see them in June they better do 85% old stuff.

Posted by Rinjo Njori | May 2, 2013 8:49 PM

Love austra. Who is flag?

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 9:02 PM

Actually a decent song, but it's pretty pathetic that these guys are well into their 50s and feuding with their former bandmates about covering 30-year old songs.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 9:05 PM

i'm generally very opinionated over such things. i'm at a loss to describe that song and their place in the world today.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 9:17 PM

Ooh... Pretty bad song.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 9:24 PM

This is certainly interesting. I feel that Greg Ginn has left a bad taste in everyone's mouth from the get-go by ripping on FLAG in the press release, for no real reason. Just take the high road, dude. There's room for everyone to have their fun.

Posted by WalkingtheMargin | May 2, 2013 9:40 PM

Sounds like Circus Lupus, honestly. Not bad...

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 9:49 PM

THIS FUCKING SUCKS!!!! i rather listen to FLAG!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 10:20 PM

NO ROLLINS NO BLACK FLAG. DAWG.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 10:42 PM

this is the beach boys shirt band, yes?

Posted by Dave Leiberman | May 2, 2013 10:51 PM

Everything about this debacle is embarrassing.
But I have to admit, the guitar on the new track does sound good.
(And whoever said Circus Lupus: Yes.)

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 11:05 PM

I was hoping this wouldn't be corny, but it is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 11:06 PM

I think he's down in the dirt.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 11:15 PM

Oh shit. This ensues...

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2013 11:38 PM

Dude i don't get what these internet people are talking about. The song's pretty good. It's exactly what I expected, if not a little better actually. Check it out for yourself.

Posted by loot | May 2, 2013 11:40 PM

Everything else aside, Greg still has the chops.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:00 AM

Rollins would be so boring to have as a singer now. Dez probably doesn't have that voice anymore at his old age. At least Chavo still sings like his life depends on it, and the song itself conveys the right mood. As far as the rivalry between the two versions of this band, that makes them all play at their best, hopefully. The only problem is that this kind of music worked because it was backed by the overwhelming willpower to tour and play live, despite no rewards, and who has the patience and stamina for that at 60? What is in it for them? A happy retirement full of groupies that will make them all Lemmy's eskimo brothers?

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:06 AM

I really only saw part of Hud. But from what I saw, Newman was excellent.

Posted by Paston Coalgue | May 3, 2013 12:47 AM

LOL @ ginns bassnectar t-shirt

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 2:07 AM

This song isn't bad.

It's certainly more interesting than an Off! song and more songs than "FLAG" is gonna write.

Also at least it's new music.

Ron Reyes does kinda sound like Chris Thomson of Circus Lupus haha.

Posted by D | May 3, 2013 3:51 AM

It is really difficult for me to decide which Black Flag singer is best...

Rather than puzzling over the exact nature of the squeezed voice and how the singer produces it, I would turn to the sounds themselves, as they are preserved in a large number of recordings, using spectrum analysis as the basic tool for investigation. In doing this, it is important to keep in mind that the expert human ear is both the most exquisite computer and the ultimate judge of the singing voice. However, when it comes to identifying the separate frequency components of a complex sound, the spectrum analyzer is far more reliable. And the reason why the spectrum analyzer is important in analyzing the phenomenon of the BLACK FLAG is that he was a consistent master in the use of resonance. Spectrum analysis gives us clear and objective evidence of use of resonance.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 4:51 AM

probably the lamest looking band picture i've ever seen

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 6:52 AM

A nation of half a billion meat-eating warmongers, with a nuclear arsenal, and yet none of you can DJ with a fraction of the brilliance that Nina Kraviz has. You have wasted your lives and now the rest of the world can see you for exactly what you are. Absolutely nothing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 7:41 AM

meh

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 7:46 AM

Greg Ginn looks like he just walked out of his neighborhood fern bar right after getting shot down by a slightly overweight early-50s divorcee.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 7:49 AM

OFF is enough for me these days, not sure how anyone could get excited/give a shit about these geriatrics niggling at each other across the chess board, but whatever...

Posted by HOPE I DIE BEFORE I GET OLD | May 3, 2013 8:18 AM

Ginns see you at Bassnectar bro

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 8:32 AM

Cool riffs, but terrible, horrid vocals and lyrics

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 8:51 AM

Fair play to Greg Ginn. Not too sure why everyone has fallen out with him, maybe he's an asshole. Same thing happened to Jello Biafra. Who cares. I probably wont be listening to either to be honest.
Flag are the hipster Black Flag but Greg Ginn IS the real Black Flag, weather you like it or not.
As far as my own personal bias? I never liked Keith Morris's voice and the Circle Jerks were the first generic Hardcore band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 9:08 AM

WTF?!.. ron's voice sounds great and thats about it, i thought rollins destroyed the band, if he didnt officially THIS song WILL

Posted by mattayr | May 3, 2013 10:05 AM

Don't usually comment round here, but this is terrible, really terrible. What's wrong with Ginn/Vallely's Good For You band that Ginn has to do this? I mean, okay people grow up, punk as kids is different than punk as adults, but this is just not cool.

Posted by B | May 3, 2013 10:16 AM

I like it & don't give a shit if you don't!

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 10:23 AM

No Rollins, no good.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 10:28 AM

Upon second listen I've decided this song is pretty mediocre and Chavo is trying too hard to sing like it's 1982.

Ginn should get rid of Chavo and have Mike Vallely sing to keep up the long tradition of Black Flag having a new vocalist for current times.

I guess Good For You could be construed as Black Flag under another name with Vallely, but I say why not have Vallely sing for BF since the GFY drummer is also BF's drummer and Ginn is "Dale Nixon" on recordings?

Posted by D | May 3, 2013 12:24 PM

As bad as this is, FLAG will be even worse. Want to know how smart Henry Rollins is? You don't see him ANYWHERE near these fucking train wrecks.

FLAG/BLACK FLAG = the worst stupid shit ever. Nice way to explode a legacy, grandpas.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:26 PM

I'm surprised at all the generosity in these comments. This new 'Black Flag' turd makes "I Can See You" -- by far the crappiest song in the BF book -- sound like a bona fide masterpiece by comparison.

I'll take FLAG, thanks. At least they're fun and play with real conviction. And it's about time some former Black Flag members actually made a little money from their contributions to the band.

Posted by Lemmy | May 3, 2013 12:36 PM

Ginn could start by getting his ass off the SST catalog and letting others give them proper releases. The Husker Du catalog sounds so bad and Rykodisc wanted to buy and and properly remaster it all, but Ginn wouldn't let it go. Asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:45 PM

Ginn is obviously mad at FLAG (who is 3/4 original members of Black Flag, the other being a former member of the Descendents) because none of them wanted to play with a man who never payed them for their work in Black Flag and he is just known to keep SST releases in stock without paying bands such as Sonic Youth anything in the 80's/90's. Sure, Ron Reyes is playing with Ginn, because there was no money for Ginn to hoard as Reyes played before the first album. The other two were never in Black Flag back in the 80's.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:47 PM

The SST CDs, rather. Vinyl is fine.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 12:47 PM

To quote the late, great Roger Ebert, thumbs down. Thumbs WAY down...

Posted by Sonic-2000 | May 3, 2013 12:58 PM

I appreciate that Ginn has not used the past 30 years to become a better guitar player.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 3:10 PM

so obvious that these vocals weren't all one take.

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 8:24 PM

BORING

Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2013 11:32 PM

Hey, 3/3/4:51, I was going to reply to your comment sooner, but I do Fourier transforms of original Black Flag 7 inch vinyl, written out longhand. Let's compare notes some time when my thesis advisor gets off my back for a minute.

Posted by rad bro | May 4, 2013 3:34 AM

I realize I'm contributing nothing original to this conversation, but this song is hot fucking garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2013 4:25 AM

Saw Ginn play a house show in Denton, TX a year or two ago, and it was honestly one of the most depressing scenes I have ever witnessed. Old guy playing wanky guitar solos over shitty little computer drum beats. Background projector was showing the "cool man" cell-osmosis psychedelic bullshit you see in fucking Iron Butterfly music videos from 1967. I think the Black Flag logo probably resonates more than the Rolling Stones' mouth and tongue shtick, but at this point there's really not much of a difference. Bunch of old fucks with awful new songs trying to capitalize on a name that lost all of its original meaning years ago. At least the fucking Stones have enough self-awareness and respect for fans to play "Satisfaction" and fucking "Jumping Jack Flash" at their overpriced shows. I would maybe drop a quarter to hear Ginn and his psychedelic dick fest play some fucked version of nervous breakdown, and clearly that's never going to happen.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2013 4:37 AM

Upon a third listen of this song, I've decided I'm not feeling it at all. I guess I was trying to really like it then realized I can't. Ginn can do better. Maybe, hopefully the next new BF song he releases will be better, or I should say more focused - what this song isn't.

One thing I will give Ginn is at least he's putting out new music unlike Flag who are merely a glorified Black Flag cover band doing it for the $$$ cuz you don't do it just for fun if have a booking agent and that booking agent books OFF! as well.

Another thing I will give Ginn which I think alot of you don't get, perhaps never did or will is Ginn always marched to the beat of his own drum and why not since he wrote and put out the music? Also Black Flag is still very much an underground band despite the mainstream press coverage. I mean where the fuck is the official Black Flag Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc? Notice how BF has none of that.

Posted by D | May 5, 2013 1:27 AM

Actually, Black Flag has all of that stuff -- Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram... there's links on their 'DropCards' page, where you have to plug in your e-mail address before you get to hear the new song.

http://dropcards.com/blackflag/content/index.php

So much for no internet presence.

Plus Greg Ginn's been on Facebook (posting cat pictures) for years, Good For You has a Facebook and an official web site, and on and on...

As for the legend of Black Flag being an 'underground' band, yeah, definitely they made the template for DIY punk during their first few years, but by the end they were almost just like any other hippie jam band playing bars (to dwindling audiences) and SST grew to be as much a rip-off label to its artists as any of the major labels were.

Posted by Dave | May 5, 2013 10:58 AM

This shit is almost as bad as Wrangler Brutes. Almost.

Posted by Anonymous | May 5, 2013 8:02 PM

Hey Dave

I stand corrected as they have all that shit haha, but what I meant by "no internet presence" is they're not really pushing all that shit.

It's all about the music with Black Flag whereas it's all about talking shit about Greg Ginn with Flag. Black Flag is coming out with a new album, that's it. Flag is playing shows andd Keith Morris strangely feels the need to run his mouth about Ginn like he still feels the need to run his mouth about the rest of Circle Jerks.

Posted by D | May 5, 2013 10:54 PM

this is some serious old guy rock. ted nugent probably thinks its edgy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 5, 2013 11:08 PM

No, but I heard he thinks your comment is edgy..

^ hey, how does Ginn's cum taste anyway? as sweet as yer dad's?

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2013 7:51 PM

He only eats pineapple when he knows you're coming around to see him. So for you, no.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2013 10:49 PM

I like Blink-182, but i also like Black flag, Cheap sex, Leftover Crack, No Ca$h, Operation Ivy, Rancid, ect... Greeday is shit. But the point is you can listen to blink or nofx, bands like that and still consider it punk. Their isn't anything wrong with that, granted it's more like gradeschool punk but their is no reason to bash on it. Greenday is absolute shit though
