Saturday (5/18) at Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park was Misty both onstage and off. J. Tillman (aka Father John Misty) played mid-afternoon set as light, atomizer-like rain frizzed hair and kept everything just a little moist. (Sunday the rain got worse and producers pulled the plug on the event.) Unlike Friday's paid-ticket kickoff event with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flaming Lips and The Darkness, Saturday's admission was free (though you had to order tickets) and also featured sets from headliners Matt & Kim, plus Lee Fields & the Expressions, Sharon Van Etten, Jovanotti and more. Pictures from Saturday are in this post. Did you brave the not-too-bad-weather for some music, beer and grub?

You can check out Friday pics of YYYs, The Flaming Lips and The Darkness. More pictures from Saturday below...

Lee Fields was incredible. Sharon was really good, too. but, personally, i thought Father John Misty was really obnoxious. music aside, i couldn't get past his shitty cooler-than-thou "rock star persona". i think showmanship is great when it seems to be coming from a pure place, but he seems like he's full of shit. he's really "posey" and condescending to the crowd. and it's not that i have anything against making fun of pretentious foodies. i'm all for it. but, it's hypocritical when it's coming from a performer at the festival. like, he's too cool for a festival like that, but he's happy to take the paycheck. if you're really against shit like that, you don't play. you don't parade around with a fucking sneer and a big ol' check from the people you're making fun of in your back pocket. that is the hollowest kind of "rebellion".

I can't believe I just scrolled through every one of those miserable photos

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 11:25 AM

Jesus, 11:19, he was kidding around.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 11:27 AM

Do Matt & Kim actually play their instruments, or do they just mug for photos?

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 11:36 AM

I understand what 11:19 is saying I guess. I didn't take him too seriously. He was occasionally funny, occasionally annoying but he can sing and the songs sounded good. That's mostly all I care about.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 11:44 AM

he certainly looks like a wanker in the pictures

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 12:16 PM

@11:27, i know he was kidding. but, to me, he came off as really smug and self-conscious. and, @1:44, i agree that he did sound good, as did his band. but, i think of of the strongest aspects of that album is that there is an underlying feeling of desperate sadness that makes those songs so much more affecting and it's hard for me, personally, to connect to those songs when he's so caught up in his own acerbic wit and all that posing for the cameras.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 12:23 PM

There's also an extremely healthy dose of that wit, dry humor and posturing in his songs themselves, his album and the whole FJM persona — an aspect he has been pushing ever further on tour.
Notice the completely absurd backdrop, the flags, disco ball, and white tiger(!!) on stage, his ad-libs in the songs, etc.

It's completely self-conscious, winking hypocrisy, (see the song "Learning to Love the War") and it's 100% part of the show.

I was super skeptical when Tillman started down this path, but he's seriously pulling it off. Show was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 12:55 PM

11:19 is right on the money. 12:55 is a complete suck-up foodie douche who doesn't know shit about music.

Was it in the contract that none of the performers were allowed to do laundry for weeks prior to this event?

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 1:40 PM

Tillman is doing a great job of mocking the music industry and the lemming fans. When he played the same quality songs as "J Tillman" honestly and earnestly, he played to a half-empty Bell House. Add the gimmicky name, hijinx, attitude and industry PR and the exact same music sells out Webster Hall.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 1:43 PM

That's not too many photos

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 2:12 PM

these people are so white, they make the cast of saved by the bell look like black panthers... AMIRITE?!?

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 2:32 PM

these people are so white they eat brunch while doing yoga.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 2:33 PM

@1:43 PM The J. Tillman songs are good in their own right, but nothing at all like misty tunes. You're stupid. Die.

If you take his banter seriously, you're missing the point entirely. Maybe Mumford & Sons is more you're speed, no shame in it. His set was amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 3:47 PM

dude, if you think Father John Misty is the antithesis of Mumford & Sons, you should check out this new "rock n' roll" stuff that's going around! it's wild! sometimes it even has distortion and hollerin'!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2013 5:37 PM

I met the most beautiful woman I've ever seen right after FJM finished, so it couldn't have been a better day for me.
