Before and after: Nikon at Jones Beach Theater

As you surely remember, last October's Hurricane Sandy put a lot of things underwater. One of them was outdoor concert amphitheater Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre. Live Nation has been busy renovating ever since the water receeded:

Along with much of the coastal regions throughout New York and New Jersey, Superstorm Sandy inflicted catastrophic damage on the venue. Sandy generated a storm surge of 8--10 feet, and the ground floor, sub-structures and pathways under Jones Beach Theatre, which sits right on Zachs Bay, were submerged. Much of the 14,000 seat venue was impacted from the surge, from the stage to the seats, the backstage and concessions and VIP areas were all severely damaged.

But before construction could even commence, more than 3 million gallons of sea water had to be pumped out of the venue, which then had to be cleaned from top to bottom. Hundreds of tons of debris and damaged structures and equipment had to be removed from the site...

...The stage and boardwalk and their substructures had to be completely rebuilt from scratch. More than 9 miles of special MCM cable had to be replaced in the tunnels and access ways below the venue. All the doors on the main level, more than 200 in total, had to be replaced. Where possible the venue's infrastructure was redesigned to mitigate any future damages (i.e. the main electrical system was relocated to the second floor, above the 100 year floodplain) and replacement appliances and equipment were upgraded to energy efficient models.
The renovated Nikon at Jones Beach Theater was finished just in time for the 2013 season that kicks off Friday (5/31) with...Rascal Flatts.

This place is the Cinnebon of concert venues. Dreadful news that they bothered to resurrect it.

WTF? A summer concert venue with no booze? Why bother?

Have you ever answered the 12 questions to see if you have a drinking problem?

I'm pretty sure that you may be surprised at the result

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2013 8:25 PM

Nothing to do with alcohol, this venue is HORRIBLE.

825 You are an idiot. Even occasional drinkers like to have a couple of drinks when they go see music outside in the summer. It's actually one of few times that I do drink.

"WTF? A summer concert venue with no booze? Why bother?"

This goes through my head everytime I'm at that venue.

1056 It's easy to sneak booze in. I once walked right in with a 16oz margarita in my hand!

On a nice night weatherwise Jones Beach is a fun place to see a show. The view is great and it creates a nice atmosphere.

This would be great news if I gave a damn about seeing Jimmy Fucking Buffett.

All wrong, it's the "Macho Man" Sandy Ravage. "The Hurricane" is Hane Shelms...

Posted by The Hitman | June 7, 2013 11:58 PM

but what happened to Big Dane?

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2013 12:10 AM

Jones Beach Is the best place to see an outdoor show. I see at least one show each season like Rush, Maiden, Tull, etc. What this place lacks in amenities, it makes up with the beautiful sea and sky. Get outdoors you bums.

AWESOME concert venue... but if ALL YOU WANT IS BOOZE then PLEASE go elsewhere. It'll make for a better concert experience for the rest of us who go for the MUSIC!!!

None can't stand in-front of natural disaster. We can only say prayer To GOD to save us from such situation.

Such situations are quiet pathetic and proper guide can help to find better solutions. Refrigerators are the one best option where food can be set germ free.
