Lauryn Hill at MHOW last night (via @gogo6969)
Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is about to do time for tax evasion, and though her high-priced show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night with guest DJ Q-Tip (May 14) might have smelled like a last ditch effort to wrangle up some cash, she reportedly didn't perform it like that:

Classic tracks such as "Lost Ones" and "How Many Mics" were delivered with such venom and quick-fire vocal prowess that it almost transformed them into entirely new compositions, nearly unrecognizable from the album versions unless you were paying close attention. The latter was especially ferocious, with Hill bringing the song down to near-silence (she would exercise considerable control over her band as the evening went on, shushing and cajoling them in equal measure depending on her mood) and turning things over to her trio of backup singers, before rousing the band and the crowd into a final, multisyllabic climax... She wasn't performing like someone who was about to go to jail. She wasn't performing like someone who just needed the money. Rather, she was performing like someone who cared so much about her craft and presentation that it bled seamlessly out of her, with near-flawless transitions and an intensity that belied her famous reclusive nature. It wasn't Lauryn Hill, neo-soul rapstress. It was Lauryn Hill laying it all on the line regardless of what would, or will, come next. -[Billboard]
Let's hope that hunger grows in her time away. Godspeed Lauryn Hill.

Check a video from last night  where Lauryn Hill invited her children on stage to perform at the end of the evening, below...

Fuck this anti-semitic bitch, hope she rots in jail.

But was she wearing clown makeup?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 12:48 PM

What time did she hit the stage?!

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 12:54 PM

Was a great show...she did start pretty late, but not unreasonably so. About 11:20 I think.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 12:56 PM

How much was it?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 1:04 PM

I just don't understand how hard it is to show up on time. I couldn't be less interested in seeing her, but it's sort of a kick in the ass to people who have to work early the next day.

If you're going to show up hours late, don't charge people $75 for tickets. Her and Axl must be buds.

Lauryn Hill's best performance ever was in court.

"Fuck this anti-semitic bitch, hope she rots in jail." - wow - 12:48, harsh words there. Relax chief, I wouldn't flatter yourself into thinking she's actually anti-semitic.

PUTTING SOME HOT SAUCE ON PITA

TWO TIME

I wish all shows started around that time. 1120 is not that late to start. If you have to get up early the next morning suck it up or don't go. I always feel like we have to rush to get to shows on time. And put a ban on picture taking also. I'd go to more shows if they'd do that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 1:30 PM

this was not a good show. don't believe the hype. those "entirely new compositions, nearly unrecognizable from the album versions unless you were paying close attention" were sped up arena-rock versions of her classics. I know some of u guys/gurls r into that but...no. her singing voice was beautiful because...well...shes lauryn hill. she rapped incredibly well considering all her verses were performed at near double time. she yelled at her band, stage manager, and sound ppl the entire time. she was manic on stage, fiddling with her in ear constantly while waving death hand motions at her 7 piece band. i'd realllly like to know what other ppl thought.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 1:36 PM

I wonder if she will start selling off her 45 kids to pay off her debts.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 1:36 PM

Setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:04 PM

Great ideas. No pictures at shows. All shows start around midnight. You're like the next Russell Simmons.

Hate this racist bitch

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:31 PM

It's in their genes. They know not what they do.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:42 PM

Wow, there are some real dipshits posting on this. Have some respect for this woman who puts herself on the line to make a difference. You all make me sick.

Posted by Tom | May 15, 2013 2:42 PM

^What line does she put herself on? What difference does she make? Lame argument.
Godspeed, right.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:47 PM

Hey Tom...how has she put herself on the line? I know that if anyone on this board failed to pay taxes for three years straight they'd be doing a lot more time than this entitled cunt.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:53 PM

Tom=White Guilt.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 2:59 PM

2:53 Do you have to pay taxes on the money your parents give you?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:03 PM

^they can give you $13,000 tax free

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:08 PM

3:03...no, but I have to pay taxes on the money I work for. Try it sometime bottom feeder.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:09 PM

godspeed...fuck off. She's a fucking racist tax evader, that cares so much about her fans she shows up on time 1 out of 100 shows. Go to jail. Do not pass go...

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:15 PM

242 You are delusional."puts herself on the line to make a difference" You may want to explain. As for her live shows, you rarely see any of the traits that made her such a big star back in the 90's: her voice, her looks, her subtlety & her delivery have all changed for the worse. And when exactly is she going to put out her 2nd solo album? You can't really count that disaster of a live album.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:15 PM

I'd like to fart in her face.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 3:18 PM

Wow, I dont understand you heartless racist people on here. The Lady was charged for not filing income taxes (which in itself is illegal, like the entire IRS which is basically one of the biggest American scams) for 3 years from 2005 to 2007. Alot of business people face similar issues out of negligence or whatever, and owe larger sums. It is quite a common offence, and usually doesn't result in jail time, especially after fines are eventually paid and for a first offender with no record. She was made a scape goat because she is a celeb and a rebel. I have to ask, what happened before that period she didn't file taxes, with all the money she made with fugees and with her very lucrative solo album project? How much taxes has she paid in her life? What happened between 2007 to 2013? Did she pay any taxes after 2007? Of course she did. Are you better than her for condemning her. She has since paid taxes the back taxes owed, and she's doing her time, taking it graceful, whie you losers are here talking shit. She's showing what it means to go through things under public scrutiny and emerge. And all you idiots saying she is a racist, use your head, did you hear it from her lips? Someone send me the clip or proof because I can't find it anywhere. You can see she has white band members, even her manager is White and a Jew and her Lawyer is also White That's not what racists do morons. Please don't be sheep, think for yourself people. Bless

The hands from the darkness will always attempt to drag down the bringers of light, whatever form they may take. Lauryn does so through her angelic voice, her caring, her attempts to make the world a better place FOR ALL PEOPLE. I hope you children grow up one day, look back and realize these comments are darkness - come to the light and help make this world a better place! Have a blessed day.

Posted by Boon | May 15, 2013 4:10 PM

Have a blessed day? Sounds like cult talk to me!

4:00 How did you know I sneezed while reading your comment? Trippy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 6:05 PM

4:10 Have a day.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 6:06 PM

Bitch got caught. She did it to herself. She knows full well you've got to file your taxes- esp when you make a shitload of money. It's a white collar crime- she'll being doing 3 months in minimum security jail, prob more like a country club. She's not going to be anybody's bitch, nobody is going to shove a broomstick up her ass.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 7:10 PM

1:08, if her performance in court were so good, she wouldn't be heading to prison.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 7:49 PM

all my prays

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 8:40 PM

All this love, all this hate
For something of no consequence
If she were white
There'd be cries for longer sentence

And you know that's true

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 8:48 PM

848 Not really.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 9:22 PM

Why is it okay when you're white to rig the system and not pay what you owe?
But when you are black it's an issue? Rich white kids are brain washed by their racists parents to think it's okay to steal but when the blacks do it they're called thieves.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2013 10:59 PM

you don't know any rich white kids.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 1:11 AM

"Anonymous", she's on a stage performing, if you didn't notice. She's dedicated her life to giving people great music, and has been exploited. You should appreciate this woman for bringing you beautiful music that speaks truth.

Lauryn, you are a gift. We thank, appreciate and LOVE you always.

Posted by Tom | May 16, 2013 2:12 AM

^ Tom is confused. Not paying your taxes is a crime, and according to crazy Joe Biden it's also unpatriotic. Well, I'm not gonna just stand around here and let you badmouth the United States Of America.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 7:39 AM

Tom 2:12 - Right, Lauryn Hill's music speaks truth, whatever that means. If she would have told the truth to the IRS, she wouldn't be in trouble. And how is performing on a stage "putting herself on the line"? Who's exploiting her? If she's a gift, hope you kept the receipt.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 7:52 AM

When I'm not rehearsing with my speed metal band Orchids Of Death I am putting myself on the line at the Valley Stream Hess full service island

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 8:07 AM

say what you will, she was amazing in "network" as that black power/panther activist. did she win an oscar for that?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 9:25 AM

212 Were you at the show? Not much great music happened there. It was a major letdown actually. I guess she needs to go back to being "exploited"!

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2013 1:08 PM

Guess she have now learned her place..... :) white people lift their little finger and she going to jail. Perhaps she will learn some respect...
