Layne Staley

"The mother of deceased Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley has sued her son's former bandmates, claiming they cut her out of royalties owed on the band's hits.

Staley's mother Nancy McCallum contends the surviving members of Alice in Chains owe her half of the money due Staley - about 16 percent of the hard rock band's income. According to the lawsuit, the band has attempted to cut her out of any further payments. [seattlepi {via)]

The Staley-less Alice in Chains meanwhile are on the road and play the MMRBQ at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ on Saturday (5/18) with Cheap Trick and fellow grunge representatives Soundgarden (who we just caught in Jersey earlier this month).

I loved Layne Staley.
I used to have a cat that I named after him.
Why can't he just rest in peace? :(

I hope she wins, fuck those bastards, you never EVER restart a bad after someone's death in the bands this proves Jerry's all about fucking money

Or, you definitely restart the band because you shouldn't have the fruits of your creative labor and livelihood destroyed by a drug addict. Layne Staley ruined himself with heroin. So Jerry's supposed to let the name die with him because... what? You have to respect the sanctity of someone who cared more about getting high than his friends and the band? Hogwash. Good for them that they let Alice In Chains live. I loved Layne's voice too, and this version of the band might not sound quite as good, but no one can blame them for making a living. Welcome to the real world, 12:23.

alice in chains went on just like ac/dc! yes it's a blow to the whole band, the world, when a front man falls, be it contract issues or death! but when they suffer the loss, pick up the pieces, and keep going forward? outside looking in , that is a TRUE band of musicians that pull it together for not just the band...but for the fans and give them credit for doing just that!! alice in chains sound strong and are back on track and I support and wish them with great success that they they all, as a band deserve!

If Jerry was half the genius he thought he was, then why didn't anyone give a shit about his solo career? And why does he STILL need a Layne stand-in to do the majority of the singing? Give me a fucking break. You hang it up out of respect for a FRIEND and a human being. Any real fan would be boycotting this shit.

Jerry was the most talented musician/songwriter in AIC. Layne could barely play guitar and half the time Jerry wrote the lyrics for him to sing. Was Layne a better singer than Jerry, absolutley, but thats about it. Tripod in 1995 was practically a jerry cantrell solo album, he took over alot of lead vocals, b/c layne could barely show up. And Jerry always wrote 90% of the music. If anyone deserves blame, it's Layne. He destroyed the band, they couldnt even tour when they had number 1 records (early-mid 90s). He was a druggie, that cared about little else but getting high. It's sad, but he gets way too much credit.

I smell a goldigger.

What you all have to consider is that the BAND, Alice in Chains ALL signed contracts, did the inital tough time getting discovered, working thier asses off, etc. reaching fame. Layne, as well as Mike were parts of that time period. I knew Mike - even dated him. He was a narcissistic ass most of the time, but personality has NOTHING to do with it. Contracts spell out exactly what is supposed to happen and to say that Layne's mother is a "golddigger" is a HORRIBLE thing to say. She wants what her son's estate is entitled too. AIC today have NO right to keep what is legally and ethically his, and thus, hers. Trust me the record companies take ALL they are entitled to - whether its blood or cash! AIC, the entity is already owned by those that started it = pay up!!!

Rockstar "Energy" tour ? More like rockmeh "Energy" tour.

I heard that in order for the rockstars to be selected. They went on a 3 year quest doing research, combing through interviews, and months worth of networking. Through all of this research, they discovered who eats the most hummus from this they concluded the best rockstars.

I loved Layne's voice too, and this version of the band might not sound quite as good, thanks!

such a tortured yet beautiful soul... it scares me to think of how rough he looked at the Unplugged gig and that he still lived another 6 years unable to create or perform music. what a tragedy.
