MMNY

Now in its seventh year, Make Music New York, “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on June 21st, the first day of summer. MMNY takes place simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 514 cities around the world — a global celebration of music making.

The next Make Music New York is on Friday, June 21, 2013.

From 10 in the morning to 10 at night, musicians of all ages, creeds, and musical persuasions — from hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock — perform on streets, sidewalks, stoops, plazas, cemeteries, parks and gardens. From high school bands to marquee names, MMNY is open to anyone who wants to take part, enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend.

In addition to the random artists and bands that will be playing live on the sidewalks and other public places on June 21 in NYC, there are many larger-scale events with Make Music New York this year, all of which are free.

From noon to 7 PM, Joe’s Pub will offer a live performance of Beck’s Song Reader sheet music album, as sung by a mix of “well-known and unknown” performers (TBA) backed by house bands Balthrop, Alabama and the 18-piece Austin band, Mother Falcon.

Mass Appeal” brings together hundreds of musicians to perform works created for one specific instrument that anyone (with said instrument) can participate in. This includes accordions in Central Park, cellos at Flatiron Building Plaza; and gongs in Herald Square. And for those who don’t play an instrument there’s  humming in the DUMBO ConEd Farragut Substation. And more.

There’s also “Lake Music” by Central Park Lake with TILT Brass performing “Dawn” from Music for Wilderness Lake at 7:30 AM; then at 5 PM George Steel conducts “Credo” for 144 singers; and finally at 8:30 PM, TILT Brass are back to perform “Dusk” from Music for Wilderness Lake.

At Tompkins Square Park from 4 PM – 8 PM will be a celebration of brass with The Himalayas, PitchBlak Brass Band, Lucky Chops Brass Band and more.

There’s lots more, including Punk Island which happens the next day (6/22) in Staten Island.
