Phoenix @ The Apollo, 5/13/2013
Phoenix

While Phoenix prepare for a much bigger tour that will include a stop at Brooklyn's Barclays Center in October (tickets), the French band wrapped up their post-Coachella tour of smaller North American venues at Harlem's historic Apollo Theatre last night (5/13). The band played a slightly longer set than their Sirius-sponsored show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last month, adding "Too Young" from their first album and "Fences" from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix to the mix. And like at MHOW, frontman Thomas Mars got into the crowd to sing as well.

Opening was Blood Orange, an increasingly rare sight from Dev Hynes who is spending more and more time in the producer's chair these days. Photos from the Apollo are in this post.

In other news, Phoenix's next single from Bankrupt! is "Trying to Be Cool" and the band have released the individual "stems" from the track so that anyone can have a go at remixing it. You can download them here and check out a Silver Swans remix below.

Anyone have a video to Sunskrupt!?

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2013 11:45 AM

Yeah I understand they have a new album to promote and the last album was huge, but United is fucking awesome and I wish those songs weren't getting thrown away. Maybe on the arena tour.

AMazing show

Paul McCartney has played the Apollo. Springsteen has played the Apollo. Stop trying to act edgy by suggesting white people going there is some sort of novelty.

Even DUFFY played there, and she is as white and pale as they come with a very white fanbase.

Amateur Night seems appropriate. Lame band. The kids these days have no taste in music.

Serious question.. was it difficult to get a cab after the show? I'll be there for Charles Bradley later this week.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2013 1:02 PM

No, it is not difficult to get a cab after the show. Just walk up or down a block or two to avoid the crowds. Got a cab last night in under 5 minutes.

102 It's still NYC. Going The Apollo is no big deal. I saw shows there in the 80's up until recently. OMG black people! Get real people!

Crowd was super lame last night. Losers on 2nd mezz were sitting down.

I love their music and wanted to like the show, but they don't connect with the audience. I thought the show was pretty dull. Would not go to another Phoenix show. Sound system should sound better for such a small venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2013 5:06 PM

I picture them being very bland live. Reproducing the sound of the record well, but not very exciting to watch, and not much interaction with the audience. Is that accurate?

I walked out on Phoenix. then, I got a cab easily. Go West on 125th and worst case you end up drinking beer at Dinosaur BBQ. Also busses that go down what turns in to CP West and you can hook up with the B/C at 110th and down.

(combines answers with old jokes here)
