Village Voice

More changes at the storied Village Voice. A pair of editors handed in their resignations yesterday...

Will Bourne, who became editor last November, and Jessica Lustig, the deputy editor since January, met with the staff at 11 a.m. on Thursday to announce their departure. In a phone interview, Mr. Bourne said that Christine Brennan, executive editor of Voice Media Group, had told them to lay off, or drastically reduce the roles of, five employees on the 20-person staff. Rather than carry out the cuts, he and Ms. Lustig resigned and left immediately, in the middle of closing next week's paper.
Bourne commented to the New York Times that he was told that the "bloodletting had come to an end" when he came on board and that he would not "preside over further layoffs."

The Voice subsequently denied the layoffs, but insisted that "further structural and staffing changes" were required.

I suppose decent, interesting articles would be preferable to staff cuts, but clearly we're only getting the latter.

For more on that woman on the cover, go to pornhub and search for "Stoya"

My god will someone please save the Village Voice!

I meant kill. Will someone please kill the Village Voice.

The Voice hasn't been relevant in several years.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 11:05 AM

the excitement of getting the voice on a friday and running through the concert listings was a huge part of my teenage years.

and the sex listings in the back.

Nice excuse to show a pretty face.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 11:10 AM

Good for them. Nice to see some people still have principles.

I've been upset with them ever since they canned Christgau.

10:51, were you able to piece that together from the headline "the prettiest girl in NY is a porn star" and the quote right next to her attributed to Stoya? newb

This paper is dead. Look no further than this year's 4knots Festival lineup for evidence of that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 11:38 AM

That pic makes her look like an inflatable blow up doll.

Firing J. Hoberman as their chief film critic a couple years back was pretty low down. And, they do not pay on time.

Recent transplants will never realize how vital The Village Voice was in NY. Instead of investigative articles, they're running more and more profile features, like the porn star cover above.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 12:16 PM

^ correction: recent trannys

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 12:52 PM

nicest Voice cover I've come across in years

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 12:52 PM

That girl isn't even close to the prettiest girl in NYC. I am about to go outside and get a sandwich and will most likely see at least 10 prettier girls in the couple of blocks I am about to walk. Just because you take it up the backdoor for money and are cute doesn't make you prettier than the other hundred thousand or more pretty girls in NYC who don't do that sort of thing. Profiles of porn stars? The Village Voice really as turned to crap.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 12:53 PM

actually if you read the fuckin thing, this profile is great. troglodytes.

When will the Voice run an article on the Most Robust Hummus Platter in New York?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 1:24 PM

11:10 didn't the Voice come out on Wed.?
I remember paying .15-.20 cents for it, check the line-up for new announcec shows at CBGB...call...make a reservation...and for $4 sit in front at a table and see two sets. Couldn't stand having to sit through the boring nebish David Byrne with the Talking Heads in order to see The Ramones.

I used to read the village voice and the new york press. that was nice. I like MAAKIES

Stoya is the hottest. Period.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 1:30 PM

Read the article, because I had never heard of her. She's a dumb cunt who fucks on camera and hangs upside down naked and Wall Street banker parties. Oh, and she smokes a lot of cigarettes. Did I miss anything?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 1:39 PM

The Voice has been dead for awhile now. They don't even have Dan Savage in it anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 1:53 PM

That girl is not even that good looking. There are MUCH better looking girls out there.

I read the article as well and she seems like any other porn star out there. Boring.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 1:57 PM

None of you squids will ever tap anything even close to Stoya's looks, so whether she is the "prettiest" in NYC or not is really a moot point in the scheme of your lives.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 2:02 PM

She is paid by bankers to hang naked from a hoop at their parties; she is paid to have sex on camera; she dates the guy who made a film with that girl from Teen Mom; and she is a chain smoker. (You can thank me later for summarizing the boring article about this unimportant person.)

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 2:18 PM

2:02: speak for yourself, Dingus.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 2:42 PM

12:53 is right. The fact that they called Stoya the prettiest girl in NYC is proof that they'll say anything to get attention. When the Voice was good, they would've at least found a real angle -- maybe "Stoya's Secret Wall Street Banker Life."

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 4:58 PM

"This is the New York I was promised." That quote needs to be discussed. Read the article if you haven't already and then let's unpack that comment.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 5:07 PM

let's all talk about porn

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 5:47 PM

what time does Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 5:49 PM

5:07 - Would rather pack Stoya's fudge.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 5:55 PM

I remember when the Village Voice came out early on Tuesday nights at Astor Place and everyone used to line up to get one, just for the apartment listings.

Apartment listings and concerts ads. Big, bold concert ads. I miss those. The internet made me $$$, but the world was much better without it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 6:00 PM

I used to laugh at the prices for apartments in the classified ads. Now I wonder who would be stupid enough to pay that much, and how much more they could have gotten out of their parents, if they weren't worried that their special little angel was actually an escort with a nasty habit, because she runs around NYC with no job or underwear.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2013 11:21 PM

that's stoya? terrible picture.

she is a pretty girl regardless of her pooper accessibility.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2013 12:47 AM

"An earlier version of this article misstated the time of a staff meeting at the Village Voice. It was 11 a.m. Thursday, not p.m."

Posted by Hazel | May 11, 2013 10:46 AM

Staff cuts?? Seriously BV? Fuck you guys really suck more and more everyday.
