Cold Cave w/ Boyd Rice @ Saint Vitus last week (more by Greg Cristman)
Cold Cave and Boyd Rice

As you may have heard, Cold Cave's tour with Boyd Rice, which has been riddled with cancellations due to Rice's inclusion, hits 285 Kent on Saturday (6/29). The Brooklyn show is still happening, however Todd P has issued a statement about it:

As you may have heard, the There has been a small uproar about Boyd Rice joining Cold Cave's show at 285 Kent this Saturday. After a handful of venues in other cities canceled tour dates due to Rice's inclusion, and notices appeared on a couple of websites, we've received about 9 emails imploring us to cancel, as well as 3 recommending we do not cancel. There has been some additional chatter on Twitter and Tumblr, etc.

Boyd Rice recently reappeared after many years absence, and has performed on bills this year at Europa and at Saint Vitus, without incident or protest. The controversy has come up because Boyd Rice is a character who has spent the last 30 or so years saying truly disgusting things - everything from palling around with the KKK to wearing Nazi uniforms to advocating the subjugation of women and the efficacy of rape. The guy revels in offensiveness and whether or not his statements are meant sincerely, or as schtick - he completely sucks as a human being and as an artist he employs abuse imagery and hate rhetoric for shock - a practice we find despicable.

So that leaves the question - why is this asshole playing 285 Kent (which I help run with Ric Leichtung)?

The rest of Todd P's statement is below...

---

Statement continued...

Well, Ric booked Cold Cave to perform - a popular cold wave pop band. The show sold out with only Cold Cave's listing, after which time Cold Cave's frontman - Wes Eisold - announced he was adding Boyd Rice as his opener for Cold Cave's entire tour. We were left with a show booking that now included a noxious character.

We find Boyd Rice reprehensible and would never curate him or any of his acts to perform. However, he was booked and that is that. We believe passionately in free speech and artistic license (in this case Cold Cave's) and we will not actively censor someone else's curation. We also believe that Boyd Rice's notoriety would only be increased by martyring him in a high profile show cancellation.

We've heard a lot of concerns that allowing this man to take the stage will "endanger" the community or will "endorse" what the guy says. We couldn't disagree more. First of all, this guy is a washed up 80's era troll. He poses no realistic threat to our community. Attempts to puff his rhetoric up into "danger" are laughable - this guy is a joke. We have straightforwardly said we abhor what he has to say. We are far more concerned about the message sent by censorship than whatever this washed up relic gets out of our allowing him to perform.

On a more philosophical level, speech is speech and action is action. We live in a free society and while artistic license and free speech are different things, they both speak to the belief system that anyone can say anything in the public forum and "right" ideas will win out over those that are evil.

Passions have run high among some, and it is altogether possible that there could be an attempt at direct action to "sabotage" the event on Saturday - there has been some conjecture that this fear contributed to the cancellations in other cities. We have already received multiple oblique threats, several curse-laden late night crank calls, anonymous threatening text messages, etc. These sort of thug tactics only strengthen our resolve, however. We will not be bullied, and frankly we wish this same level of passion was instead directed at undoing the fascistic NSA's surveillance structure recently revealed to be infiltrating all of our lives, rather than freaking out over a pathetic old hack saying bullshit that is designed to offend.

We encourage anyone who wishes to attend the show but does not wish to watch Boyd Rice to leave the room when Boyd Rice performs. We will issue refunds to anyone at the door who purchased a ticket but has now chosen to skip the show (and we won't be releasing new tickets to replace those that are refunded).

For what it's worth, we will be challenging Boyd Rice's views on site, night of show, by distributing literature at tables set up in the lobby, explaining who Boyd Rice is and what his shameful history entails, as well as information about how to get involved in anti-fascist activism, support for the victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, and the cause of freedom of expression.

We at 285 Kent don't expect this decision or explanation to fully please those individuals who wanted us to cancel. We respect your views, even if we disagree about tactics, and we hope you can extend us the same respect.

sincerely, Todd and Ric and 285 KENT AVE

Bravo Todd, well said.

Total BS response. Less than 24 hours before the show? Applaud yourself, Todd. Tell people they can leave while BR is playing? How about depriving him of $? Literature tables in the lobby? You might as well throw some glitter at him on his way in. Real half assed attempt at poor decisions that YOU guys made. Take some real accountability, don't hide behind defending freedom of expression.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 9:50 PM

Freedom of expression doesn't just mean the first amendment, assholes. You can also defend it as a principle. I applaud the statement. I'm a liberal, but I'm ashamed at how my fellow liberals so often want to silence any speech different then their own. It's pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 9:55 PM

Gotta back Todd P on this. The ACLU defended the rights of Neo Nazis to march back in the 70s. Is it abhorrent? Yes, but if you believe in freedom you have to afford that liberty to those you find disgusting.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 10:12 PM

Todd, Wes Eisold doesn't run 285 Kent, you do, so you saying Wes runs / has control of the show is nonsense. You could've and should've said no and from what I got from your above statement you'd have booked a current member of the KKK if Wes wanted one to play cuz after all, "freedom of speech", right?

'Say you said no to Boyd Rice being added. What was Cold Cave gonna do, not play 285 Kent? 'Say you said no to Boyd Rice then Cold Cave said no to 285 Kent. Sue Cold Cave for the cost of the show. Hey, they have a booking agent and contract and c/would sue you if you paid them a dime less than the guarantee, so it wouldn't be wrong of you to sue them for losing a night.

Wes Eisold is a douchebag on so many levels - where do I begin? For one he's a wannabe '80s New Wave nerd, a pretentious asshat, and a hardcore when it's convenient bitch who does American Nightmare (Hypemare/ Nightbore) when he isn't making enough money with Cold Cave.

The bottom line is Todd P is the owner and boss of 285 Kent and could've overriden Boyd Rice playing. Freedom of speech is not limitless.

Posted by D | June 28, 2013 10:15 PM

Since when does a person HAVE to let someone speak in their private establishement?

285 Kent books Cold Cave, Cold Cave is contractually committed to playing the club. Cold Cave then says they wanna add Boyd Rice.

If it were my club, I'd say no and if Cold Cave said why, I'd say cuz it's my club, I don't want that shithead playing it cuz I don't support his bullshit, and when you have your own club you can book him. I could stop at saying "my club" and that's that. If Cold Cave said then we're not playing, I'd say yeah? ok see you in court for the money I lost giving up the night for you moreoever for breach of contract.

Posted by D | June 28, 2013 10:24 PM

So I can only get a refund if I show up at the door? Weak sauce.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 10:29 PM

Who the fuck is Cold Cave?

Posted by Fuck All | June 28, 2013 10:31 PM

no one gave a fuck when he played with them in 09.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 10:43 PM

285 Kent/Todd went with the money. Saying you're resisting being bullied into canceling the show is stupid. You're basically saying that you're going to support Boyd Rice, rather than look like you're going to let your balls get stepped on. This isn't about "liberals" or people being too sensitive or free speech. I doubt that most of the supporters are even old enough to really know what a wash up. attention whore Boyd Rice is. Thank you 285 Kent/Todd for giving him a platform again. Ha!

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 10:43 PM

The biggest crime here is that 285 Kent is still open. That place is an absolute dump.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 11:05 PM

The guy just stands around snorting snuff in an SS hat. He poses no threat. Simply laugh at him. The real crime here is Wes's terrible live vocals.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 11:11 PM

You all really need to lighten up. The man pursues all this "hateful" imagery from a tongue-in-cheak, DADAist perspective. The joke is on all you dummies for taking all his activities so seriously. I, as well as countless others, will not be attending this show, not because we disapprove of Mister Rice's questionable ethical motives, but rather to boycott the venue and not contribute to the fiscal gain sub-moronic, liberal reactionaries.

A lot of white hipsters are racists. So why would they mind.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 11:17 PM

Grow a pair of balls and stand your ground. Don't look for half baked excuses.
Boyd Rice is probably a more interesting character than most of the antifa fascists who are trying to make the organizers cancel the show because it's not PC.

If you don't like it, don't go to the show and go jerk yourself while listening to the Pixies (they always sucked, nothing new) or the new Kanye West (oh my god, revolutionary... rick rubin's finest work... just kidding)

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2013 11:26 PM

White peeps love to get all up in arms about shit like this. What are you afraid of? What could this old man possibly do to ANYONE. It's schtick, plain and simple. And if you think people are too dumb to know the difference, kill yourself

"he was booked and that is that." well said.

This backlash is exactly what Boyd Rice thrives on.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 12:22 AM

will there be a hummus and pita triangle table at the show?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 12:27 AM

Although i really appreciate and support Todd's statement, i see no need for the countless insults that are included in it. All of you gonna be washed up something one day, you for sure Todd. As a radical 80s alum i know and understand where BR comes from, without falling into his traps. Freedom of speech is just an overused coin in this hypocrite country. One BV commenter has explained to me this week that the Boston club douche boss is a private business and therefore was not committed to freedom of speech. That argument alone says it all about the ignorance in this country...

The strongest point in Todd's statement was, why aren't you all descending on the white house right now, the home of the biggest fascist traitor who stabbed us all in the back?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:19 AM

I regret buying a ticket to this show. Not because of Boyd Rice, but because after watching a few live clips, Cold Cave suxxxxxx. I dig some of their hacky "gothbanger" songs, but the new stuff is p. bad.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 3:22 AM

Worse than hate speech is no speech. I applaud Todd's position. If you don't like it, don't go. It ain't that big of a deal. The earth's not gonna shake if Boyd Rice performs and life goes on.

Posted by D | June 29, 2013 4:14 AM

"If it were my club, I'd say no and if Cold Cave said why, I'd say cuz it's my club, I don't want that shithead playing it cuz I don't support his bullshit, and when you have your own club you can book him. This is why R5 Productions canceled the Philly Cold Cave/Boyd Rice show, because BR was added to the show after it had been confirmed and announced, CC refused to take him off the bill, and R5 didn't want to deal with the headache of booking Boyd Rice.

can't believe people get upset about boyd rice in 2013. i guess this is the first time a lot of hipsters are hearing about him. dude poses no threat whatsoever. and if you hate his "politics" so much, go to the show and punch him out. he would love that.

the condescending attitude of todd p towards rice is embarrassing, but at least they are going on with the show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 1:42 PM

Thank you for writing this but the bottom line is you (285k, Todd etc..) are still profiting from the concert. And the fact that no one at Cold Cave speaks up about this means that they are aligned with Boyd Rice.
The dignified thing to do here would be to cancel this. Specially this being Pride Weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:11 PM

Boyd Rice played NYC twice this year and no one gave a shit. Funny what censorship does for publicity.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:12 PM

at the end of the day is worth sacrificing your dignity to see a third rate Andrew Eldritch imitator (the glasses, the glasses...) playing technopop? There are a billion of more interesting things happening in NYC. This is actually a huge loss for Cold Cave - this changed the way I see the band for aligning itself with this.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:22 PM

BS! you're making money out of this. Bullshit! Bulshit! cancel this.

As Boyd Rice pretends to be a Nazi, we have out govt behaviving exactly like a Nazi regime.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:49 PM

this is when 285 Kent crosses the line and becomes a corporate venue. this has nothing to do with free speech and fuck Wes Eisold (his career now will be linked forever with Rice, what's the next collaboration? Chris Brown?) by letting this guy play at 285 Kent for whatever reason, you're endorsing him and profiting from it. end of the story.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 2:57 PM

I'm glad Cold Cave started sucking a long time ago so I don't have to feel conflicted about this.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 3:37 PM

@2:11 You say PRIDE comments as if boyd is a homophobe. The guy plays in and has collaborated with homosexual bands/artists for 30 years. Even recently playing in New York with hirsuit pursuit but I guess it wasn't on tumblr then so you weren't jumping on the anti boyd bandwagon. Get a life.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 3:46 PM

BOYD RICE IS NoT A NAZI. Jesus...

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 4:07 PM

does this mean that the gates of kent will now be open to other artists with "nazi" sensibilities, such as Death in June or Lady Gaga? We should start preparing the table with flyers now.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 4:31 PM

Conflicted, and revising my opinion of cold cave. Perhaps not the synth dorks we all thought they were if they're willing to take a stand for a noise legend?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 4:44 PM

Are these the same 2-3 seventeen year-old "punk 4 life" kids commenting over and over again because they're upset someone dared challenge their simple-minded political understanding of the world? Or is the current DIY scene in Brooklyn really this dogmatically rigid, humorless, and intellectually close-minded?

It's embarrassing what the originally nonconformist punk scene has degenerated into...

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 5:07 PM

To anyone even minimally informed, Boyd Rice is at best an ornery provocateur, and at worst a toothless lush from a bygone musical era. Todd P's criticisms only further expose his own superficial aspect. Where is Todd P's rant against the misogyny and violence in rap music?

To anyone who devotes energy to criticizing/protesting this show, I wonder how active you are in criticizing/protesting your own government, or the actions and gatherings of actual hate groups.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 5:16 PM

FUCK ALL THESE NERDS.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 5:26 PM

I would expect all the complaintants in this matter have saved the receipts for their Joy Division T-shirts so they can return them to Urban Outfitters. They used to dress in identical fascist garb for performances. And their debut EP featured an illustration of a Hitler Youth banging a drum.

I think there were a few swastikas included in that punk fashion thing at the MET compliments of Vivienne Westwood. Sid Vicious was never shy about wearing his big bright red swastika tank top either.

The last time I was at 285 Kent I saw a girl with a Chanel purse. Coco Chanel happens to have been a real Nazi. I guess it could have been a knockoff.

"A lot of white hipsters are racists. So why would they mind."

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 7:28 PM

Boyd Rice is far from being a noise legend. and the argument that we should "challenge the mainstream" and accept Boyd Rice or that people are superficial and don't really understand the real Boyd Rice is bollocks. This is not about the image, he continuously repeats the same retarded misogynist routine over and over again.

I would go point by point in tearing up everything you said but instead I will illuminate one thing.

Boyd Rice in his "art" trolled around with/gave interviews etc with people who take these views seriously. People like Tom Metzger and other various Klan/Nazi fuckholes. They don't see his art goofing and neither do women who have been raped or people who lost loved ones in the holocaust.

Seriously, you and a bunch of others on here apologizing or trying to justify anything this waste of life does as being art or provocative are very very stupid and misguided.

Todd p is a fucking tool. He should be embarrassed about this:

"The Market Hotel project is happening for real this summer—the roommies are moving out, the construction plan is breaking ground, we’re getting permits and licenses etc—there’s lots to do, and we could use help. Looking for students who are living in New York City and are off for the summer, who can commit to a set schedule of at least 3 days per week, and own a laptop. No experience required and folks who can receive course credit are preferred. You will be working in (and out) of the office that also manages 285 KENT AVE, Stanhope Cellar Studios, SHOWPAPER, Otras Obras, Festival Nrmal, etc. Opportunities to learn about show booking, construction project management, gallery management, how licenses and permits work, bookkeeping, banking, and a lot more. email an informal resume to THEMARKETHOTEL@GMAIL.COM."

Free labour weeeeeeeeeeeee! Seriously dude, pay you cheap fuck. But then again who can make money these days actually paying for labour? Do yourself a favor and don't intern for this tool bag. It will not get you marketable skills that will be valuable later. Free labor leads to more free labor really. It's probably a totally illegal "internship" (as are tons of them) but I'm sure no one will complain. He's looking for a fucking staff and will most likely treat you like absolute shit and when it's done you will figure out how you wasted your time. Todd p is a total asshole too. He's fucking disgusted by Boyd rice while looking for slaves for his little worthless empire that can't even afford to pay a staff. Douche.

http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/06/13/are-unpaid-internships-illegal/

Here's one of the requirements for an internship to be legal:
"The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff." He would totally need to pay for all the services he mentions but of course would rather not pay for it. Dickhead.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 11:12 PM

Hold on, not once in any of these comments do I see any mention of Rice remixing some new Neon Indian(fairly prominent act at the moment) record as I just read on the Mute website(a prominent seminal record label). Artists are clearly interested in collaborating with him, yet all im hearing about is CC. I believe Dwid was hooked up with him at some point? I see DIJ shirts openly sported at shows with nary a threat to the owner. fact is, the dude is out there, in the real world, living and breathing and working with other prominent artists who I see no sign of backlash against. This is the first time I've ever posted on BV, but as someone who has been friendly with Wes going back years, I find his character assassination on here to be deplorable. He has been into the same shit since he was 14 and was ahead of the curve on a lot of shit and is responsible for changing a lot of kids lives which was made evident to me by the outpouring of love at their Webster Hall shows. Like it or not he is one of the voices of his generation and will be remembered, while the only shot at longevity the trolls of BV will have is in some Google archive.

1113 cool story bro, now go back to blowing wes

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 11:16 PM

Hey Todd!!

Displacement And Supervision Issues
If an employer uses interns as substitutes for regular workers or to augment its existing workforce during specific time periods, these interns should be paid at least the minimum wage and overtime compensation for hours worked over forty in a workweek. If the employer would have hired additional employees or required existing staff to work additional hours had the interns not performed the work, then the interns will be viewed as employees and entitled compensation under the FLSA. Conversely, if the employer is providing job shadowing opportunities that allow an intern to learn certain functions under the close and constant supervision of regular employees, but the intern performs no or minimal work, the activity is more likely to be viewed as a bona fide education experience. On the other hand, if the intern receives the same level of supervision as the employer’s regular workforce, this would suggest an employment relationship, rather than training.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2013 11:39 PM

The Test For Unpaid Interns
There are some circumstances under which individuals who participate in “for-profit” private sector internships or training programs may do so without compensation. The Supreme Court has held that the term "suffer or permit to work" cannot be interpreted so as to make a person whose work serves only his or her own interest an employee of another who provides aid or instruction. This may apply to interns who receive training for their own educational benefit if the training meets certain criteria. The determination of whether an internship or training program meets this exclusion depends upon all of the facts and circumstances of each such program.
The following six criteria must be applied when making this determination:
The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment;
The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;
The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff;
The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;
The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and
The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
If all of the factors listed above are met, an employment relationship does not exist under the FLSA, and the Act’s minimum wage and overtime provisions do not apply to the intern. This exclusion from the definition of employment is necessarily quite narrow because the FLSA’s definition of “employ” is very broad. Some of the most commonly discussed factors for “for-profit” private sector internship programs are considered below.

I don't understand what Wes is trying to prove here, but I ended up walking out after the first song because I didn't really need to stare at this piece of trash washed up bridge troll that that neo nazi is.

show was aiiight once you got past the karaoke vibe. wes is awkward as fuck on stage. boyd's set was short, so no big deal. some of that stuff was crazy annoying though. oh yeah, that fat dude opener who was also the roadie - fuck that guy. what a rude piece of shit. i'm more offended by him than old fuck face rice. dude just shoved his way through crowds to set up in between sets. not one simple "excuse me" just straight pushin bitches left and right. back to boyd tho - i'm not even sure why the motherfucker is on stage with CC. i couldn't give a fuck about what he's about, but he didn't do shit except for one weird vocal thing for one song that lasted 10 seconds. the chick on the side is the one who pushes play on her macbook to get the music goin, while Wes sings and struggles with the mic stand. why was boyd rice needed up there?

You guys are so butt-hurt. Nazis suck. Rapists suck. Racists suck. I honestly don't believe Boyd Rice is any of these things. Because of the fact he has aligned himself with these ideologies, he deserves all the hate he is getting. But I watched them in Columbus, OH (before I knew shit about Boyd Rice) and the guy performed his set without incident and did no wrong while he was in the venue. If you really don't like this guy, you are doing him a lot of favors by bitching and giving him attention. If you don't like it, don't go to the show. If you're going to throw a bitch-fit about it, all you're doing is giving him free publicity, so congrats.

Posted by Robert | June 30, 2013 1:57 AM

The funny thing about all this is so simple...

A bunch of butthurt politically correct assholes are up in arms about Boyd, yet blindly support Obama who is tracking your every move, and burning our rights, disregarding the constitution, and acting like a nazi.

The rediculous thing is most are too dumb to even realize it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 2:51 AM

^Coming from someone who misspells ridiculous I will take your paranoid comment and calling of other people dumb with a grain of salt.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 3:33 AM

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 3:43 AM

Really offensive that this flash-in-the-pan, substance lacking, poorly veiled artist is playing at 285 Kent and there is so much attention.

Also, it sucks Boyd Rice is playing.

I don't understand why people weren't protesting Dom being part of the band for a few years. Dom has been supporting artist worse than Boyd Rice through his signing and distributions on hospital productions for as long as the label has been around.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 12:11 PM

I have always thought todd p was a pretty solid character but this is really Bs. to have an artist come play at your venue and to actively slag him in your official statement before the show is so low. Todd P should be ashamed of himself. I'm 100% jewish. I don't give a crap if Boyd Rice is dressed up as a nazi, I am still willing to check out his concert. Music is about pushing barriers of taste, decency and perception. So what if todd got 9 emails from people asking him not to have Boyd Rice play. 9 people are against boyd rice in nyc. So what. more than 9 people hate me. so what

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 12:50 PM

there's a difference between nazis and fascists. calling obama a nazi is pretty ridiculous.

And additionally, Todd Pendu cannot run a record label.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 1:24 PM

1:28: "why was boyd rice needed up there?"

Pretty sure this was Wes's justification for keeping Boyd on the bill. "You want to cancel this show because he's on the bill? Well YOU CAN'T, because he's IN MY BAND NOW."

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 1:37 PM

Boyd Rice made Cold Cave look really cool on stage.

The Nazi's were allowed to gain strength and make their push in order to create a world war. The goal was to slice up the world and that is exactly what happened. This was not residual and not a post war humanitarian rebuilding effort at all. Who gained total control here? And this continues today in the middle east, for god sakes still in Africa, as well as, in Asia.

Putin is losing it over Syria. The middle East is gone.
Now it's the rest of Asia with Russia watching.
Get ready for the final chess match and wake up!

Oh yeah, do not get caught up with countries and presidents/leaders. They are puppets. Look deeper.

Boyd Rice means zilch!

Right so an anonymous poster is calling me a schmuck for supporting free speech and the 1st amendment and calling to task a promoter who doesn't even stand behind the artists it books.

If todd P really wanted to send a message about how much he disliked Boyd rice he would have cancelled the show outright.

I have been fully aware of Boyd Rice for years his music and his message are only controversial if you let them be.

At least Boyd Rice has the courage to stand up for what he believes in and doesn't hide behind anonymous comments and doesn't go ahead with events he doesn't fully believe in. Boyd Rice is controversial because of his beliefs and in having his beliefs he has had to suffer the consequences of those beliefs.

It is unacceptable for a promoter to insult and malign a performing artist who is going to appear on his stage. It shows a lack of any kind of moral character and it shows ignorance.

Let Boyd Rice speak for himself. Let not others judge those who have no right to Judge others themselves.

I like Boyd Rice no more or no less after this recent debacle but my respect for Todd P has gone down the drain.

If that makes me a schmuck than I dont want to be a vagina.

Oh, right, I did. Carry on, you mealy-mouthed cretins.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 8:34 PM

this is all just character-assassination...

Todd-P can't see things straight because he is a Jew who made money off a "Nazi"...

so he's going to call out this "Nazi" for being a "washed-up joke" while being careful not to point out that Boyd Rice is ACTUALLY A CURRENT MEMBER OF COLD CAVE -- not some "curated opening act out of their control"

do you think Todd-P issues statements about rappers who have lyrics about violence, rape, racism, etc?? Nope -- because it's politically incorrect to target the free speech of minorities UNLESS they are white and supposedly Nazi... then it's fair game.. are there ever anti-Jew lyrics in rap music?? you bet. do these rappers ever get called out for being Nazi or anti-semitic?? almost never... it's just white guilt for bringing them over in slave ships in the first place... not very cool at all but it did lead to some amazing music being made....

Posted by ///////////// | June 30, 2013 8:39 PM

I am shocked, hurt and upset by Boyd Rice.
He is the biggest threat to my well-being. In fact, he is the biggest threat to the world at large! Let us all meet and sing tonight about how he is the cause of all of our ills.

I'm crying as I type this. Damn you Boyd Rice!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2013 9:04 PM

It seems like the Boyd Rice controversy still rages on Facebook. If the event of the performance of Rice at 285 Kent--among misinformed Ad Hoc-ers and angry, hateful young people who have no comprehension of the liberating aspects of Industrial culture--reveals any sort of truth, it is that the Industrial attack on the sign is still making the moralistic uncomfortable. What is most unsettling is that the moralistic are walking in our underground, having infiltrated our scene from the inside, in the neoliberal guise of the booker, the curator, the blogger--the third party type 'just trying to be a part of something' by any means necessary. At the show last night I had to listen to a person, livid and ready to attack Rice the human being, rail on about how he, the young man (not Rice) was a minority, that Cold Cave "dont spend time around minorities" and so on. I simply posed the question to him: Why are you still thinking of yourself as a minority, and not as a singularity among other singularities on a plane of motion that makes us all one and whole? And in addition, why are you framing the shock of Rice and his "shtick" in terms of real life and not within a separate space, indeed a space of the medium in general, as well as a space made different by the conditions of performance in particular? Only in this setting--within a set of criteria against or for his act in the conditions of a performance-- can one actually, in truth, go after the legitimacy of what Rice is doing. Anything else is a fascist action against Rice. I understand fully that the Industrial use of signs could, in fact, lead to a dark relativism for the unspeakable horrors of WWII. We see this clearly in the boneheaded appreciation of the power electronics genre, for example. And by no means, do I support these bad eggs. But a performance itself does not hurt anyone. Widespread ignorance, on the other hand, does. Most of all, however, what this event reveals broadly is the truth that the in-mixing of art and life, a condition created by a widespread relativism and flattened understanding of underground music history as it related to a moment in time, is no longer separate from day to day existence. Music and art in the underground is so in-mixed with common experience, indeed its "sensibility has been re-distributed" so profoundly, that its status as a critical outside has collapsed. Thank you, Todd and Ric for declaring an historically important individual, someone who did something at a point in time, a "pathetic old hack." Let us take back our underground, our outside from these bloggers, from these culture dealers, from these a-political relativists, more concerned with Instagram and Facebook and the disrespect of the artist in the name of cultural capital than with the old, real, avant-garde dream for another world actually free from Fascism

285 Kent existed before Boyd Rice so what's the big deal has Boyd Rice ever destroyed a building? he makes new wave music that anyone can dance too be it in a Jewish or non-Jewish establishment. if he was a true Nazi he would have tried hurting Jews in New York. instead he was here to ENTERTAIN!!! that's what the difference is here -- it's not World War 2 anymore and Jews & Nazis have found new ways to make money together without destroying buildings or human lives in the process. Todd P has a great reputation for being fair to bands the only flack he gets is for taking advantage of intern labor but these kids are learning valuable skills and will be our bloggers and show-runners of the FUTURE. just as Boyd Rice has inspired a generation of youngsters Todd P. is doing the same in his own way. except Boyd Rice pretends to spread hate as a form of performance art while Todd P. truly spreads his hate of Boyd Rice under the guise of a businessman who cannot come to terms of making some "dirty money". this shows how deep Boyd Rice's concepts are. he can create real hatred by breaking taboos. Todd P. right now is his tool for this but there will be others. this is why Boyd Rice plays pop music - he wants people to stop hating others and just dance and forget about everything that makes us angry people.

Posted by Boyd Rice is a SONG & DANCE man!!! | July 1, 2013 11:38 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:34 PM

I'm really loving the irony of this statement. This is an establishment who's bartender solicits men to "party" with under-aged girls. It's pretty shocking they would have the audacity to issue a statement that is so condemning and malicious in the name of "moral outrage". And as far as I can tell, Rice is a noise musician; he makes noise. He doesn't say anything when he performs so the notion that he is standing there spewing hate speech is preposterous.

Posted by Jocelyn Perez | July 1, 2013 10:38 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 2:52 AM

the more I am reading into and researching boyd rice the more I am coming to see how overblown and ridiculous it was for todd p to denounce him. Boyd Rice is not a bad person. He does things for shock value and to get people to think and to discuss and to break you out of your catatonic state.

Boyd Rice is a shit disturber. So much so that even at 56 years old he can still elicit such outrage. As far as I can tell the joke is on Todd P and anyone else who takes him seriously enough to flip out over him. Thats exactly the kind of response he wants. I think he also wants to elicit conversations about what is and isnt.

again as a jewish american, Im just not offended by this guy. he's been kicking around since the 70's. He makes noise music. Noise music is offensive to the ears. If its offensive in its ideology too thats just par for the course.

Hey old noise dudes stop being dimwitted and appreciate the brilliance of what Todd p did here. He took the issue of Boyd being offensive off the table and made the protestors look stupid if they pulled any shit. That cleared the way for the show to go on without it risking their spot. Boohoo boyd rice got insulted? I mean, really we're supposed to look out for Boyd's feelings now? Boyd's whole thing is about embracing statements you don't necessarily mean, for effect. Kinda what 285 accomplished in this statement.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 8:53 PM

the plot thickens: Boyd Rice has just issued a statement on his website urging people to boycott all future 285 Kent events because of their treatment of him.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 9:06 PM

I never even heard of this guy until Todd P.'s statement was being circulated on Facebook. Now I've read enough about him that suggests he's not even a racist--just someone who purposely uses provocative themes and imagery in his music and look. Big fucking deal.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 10:15 PM

Todd P. had a baby so he is thinking of his kid's future that is just what fathers have to do in this day and age. Boyd Rice has also had babies. They are more alike than anyone cares to think. Why would one father insult another father? What if Boyd's child was to read this insult and be so angry as to attack Todd P.'s child? This is called child endangerment & he just needs to be more careful for the safety of his children for them o not be hurt by his words.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 10:52 PM

I prefer Quinoa.
Boyd Rice is just way too bland and sticks to the pan.
Only used by those who think that cooking stir fry with ketchup is stepping up one;s heath.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 10:57 PM

what Todd P. did against Boyd Rice was his own form of HATE SPEECH that is not cool at all he used to promote better values than this for our city's entertainment scene. Todd should issue a public apology to Boyd Rice and also to all of the people who have him mixed up with Todd Pendu he needs to have some kind of press conference to serve as damage control for this whole mess. There were people so upset that night it reminded me of after Michael Jackson passed away and that's no way to spend time. Michael would just want everyone to be happy and enjoy themselves. I bring up MJ for a reason because just like Boyd Rice he was accused of some very bad things and many people rushed to judgement about him being a monster but he also brought us some of the best music ever made and he electrified the whole world. These unsubstantiated rumours never kept Michael Jackson from being able to perform on stage and Boyd Rice should receive the same treatment in this regard.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 11:08 PM

Michael Jackson was 100% guilty. We are talking OJ Simoson guilty.
If you disagree you are a victim to his millions of dollars he spent on lawyers and public relations propaganda.
I would rather hang out with a pretend nazi (such as Boyd Rice or David Bowie) then a minute with that Michael Jackson freak. But to be honest, I'd prefer hanging out with some musician that has actual talent. This cold cave crap is boring and a copy of like 100 other noise acts.

O,J, Simpson was proven innocent in a court of law. It seems that the murder glove fit neither his or MJ's hands. This is where our discussion gets very interesting because Wes and Boyd are both glove-wearers and are being accused of bad things. Why not re-open the O.J. investigations to see if the murder glove fits either of these bad dudes? if they were guilty then Todd P. and show promoters across the world could breathe a sigh of relief for not having to cancel their sold-out shows.

Everyone's missing something here. it's that Todd P. is a true american hero in the ultimate sense. after cancelled Cold Cave shows in lesser cities like Boston and Philadelphia. not to mention two cancelled shows in lesser cities (Toronto, MOntreal) in the inferior nation just north to us. well Todd P. took a huge stand to not let politics stand in the way of capitalism. that is what America (aka The United States) is truly about. we are here to make money regardless of any rights or wrongs. that money helps keep our country strong and is why we have the best military and helps us win all of our wars. let the historians sort out the controversies. Todd P. did right by New York, he did right by Brooklyn, and he did right by America. don't cancel a sold-out show because of some crybabies. leave those kind of actions for residents of poorer cities like Boston, Philly, Toronto, & Montreal. Their loss is OUR gain. this is why New York is still the best city in the world because our show promoters fight for freedom and generate profits.

or maybe, just maybe, Todd P just thought it was a bunch of bullshit

Believe it or not, Todd's floating on air. He never thought he could be so free! Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Could it be? Believe it or not, it's Todd P!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Bitches and Hos, and all you people in between, ask yourselves this: would Mamoun EVER serve Boyd Rice? Are you freaking kidding me? Habbibi would pop an artery!

Jesus.

should we permit HATE SPEECH against HATE SPEAKERS? do two wrongs make a right or does it multiply the wrongs? but then if the original "HATE SPEECH" is an artistic pose and the response HATE is real hatred then should't the REAL HATER be punished for not having love in his heart?? Todd-P's writings have all the hallmarks of HATE SPEECH so maybe Boyd Rice has tricked him into becoming his own greatest enemy.

Everyone calling Boyd Rice bland is a loser. Boyd Rice has millions of fans across the globe. And further more it's condescending- as if a Brown Rice Medley was so superior.

Yeah, right.

go crawl back in your hole now boyd rice.

this shouldn't be misconstrued as people wanting to hear more from you.

I would love to hear more from him and see him play more

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2013 9:50 AM

maybe Boyd should stay off the internet. posting comments about his own controversy is embarassing

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2013 11:46 AM

just because someone says something on the internet and attaches someones name to it does not mean they are actually the person whose name they are using.

Comments like these always make me wonder if they have ever actually listened to the song they are referring to.
