Kim Deal w/ Pixies in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Kim Deal

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

- Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering

The above message was issued by the three remaining members of the Pixies regarding the departure of bassist/backing vocalist Kim Deal, who also sometimes sang lead on songs like "Gigantic" and "Silver."

The band initially broke up in 1993, but had recently been reunited to tour their 1989 album, Doolittle, which they last did in 2011. Since that time, Kim has been busy touring with her other reunited band, The Breeders.

A video of the Pixies performing "Gigantic" below...

is it because she eclipsed Black Francis on the scale?

Why would she need to leave? These guys are barely active these days.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:07 AM

I don't like that this doesn't just read "The Pixies break-up again".

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:10 AM

BIG DEAL!

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:13 AM

A Pixies without Kim is a Pixies I have no interest in.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:19 AM

^^^agreed, they need to hang the towel until she returns

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:22 AM

maybe they will bring in Kim deal's sister to play gigantic? Is this all because the pixies are gearing up for yet another oldies tour and Kim has no interest?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:25 AM

Frank Black just needs to end this. This band has been touring for the last 10 years on albums from 20 years ago and have offered no new material. What is the point?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:26 AM

The point is to hear a band you like play music you like.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:32 AM

Now they can't cash in on the anniversary of the Doolittle anniversary tour.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:36 AM

Too bad they can't find a chick who sings/looks just like her.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:47 AM

"Why would she need to leave? These guys are barely active these days."

Exactly. Did they record anything new except for that one Kim Deal song early on in their reunion?

I went to two of the Hammestein shows. Meh. They are better off in the broken up category.

"BIG DEAL!"

well done

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 10:59 AM

I was under the impression that they were writing new Pixies material. Guess not.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 11:00 AM

guess she didn't want to be a millionaire anymore??

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 11:26 AM

I pray they don't tour without her.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 11:52 AM

Don't worry, they will. Francis will keep this gravy train rolling no matter what.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 12:00 PM

Emphasis on the gravy

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 12:05 PM

of course they will keep going - the statement reads like the 3 of them are still a band...otherwise there would be a 'we will retire' type statement

they milked every penny out of this and should just end it gracefully...but of course they will continue with more embarrassing results

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 12:30 PM

well this fucking sucks. touring as 'pixies' without kim is definitely a turning point for the band, in the extremely negative sense.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 12:41 PM

I know another bass playing alterna-hot Kim that may be available.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 1:56 PM

weren't they just in the studio recording recently?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 2:41 PM

I just hope they have David Lovering do his magic show as an opener again

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 3:49 PM

The Pixies without Kim is like the Replacements without Bob.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 4:29 PM

how about they get Kim Gordon?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 5:01 PM

Pixies recorded a new album with dummy basslines; Kim overdubbed hers separately, guess she wasn't into the final result and felt she'd be happier working on her own material (solo and Breeders). Good for her.

God bless Texas!

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2013 11:40 PM

D'arcy is available.

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2013 12:11 AM

Live Nation is also rumored to do a hostile takeover of the Sabra Corporation, thereby having a complete monopoly on the entire indie scene.

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2013 7:59 AM

Ugh, she always sucked. Black Francis is the man. GOT ME A MOVIE! Kill yourselves!

Posted by Don | June 15, 2013 1:39 PM

OK, Pixies movie since you asked ...

Zach Galifianakis as Frank Black
Rosie O'Donnell as Kim Deal
That dude with the monkey from The Hangover movies as Joey Santiago
Neil Patrick Harris as Dave Lovering

cameos by ...

Ricky Gervaise as Gil Norton
Tom Cruise as Bono
Billy Corgan as himself
Rob WIlliams in drag as Frank & Joey's sociology prof at UMass

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2013 4:41 PM

hob about they get D'Arcy?

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2013 4:44 PM

Isn't it sad?

Posted by Advogados Porto Alegre | June 15, 2013 6:41 PM

Gob Bluth as David Lovering

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2013 4:47 PM

I don't wanna know any man, woman, or child who thinks Kim Deal sucks, Don at 1:39. Take your own advice and kill yourself, we'd all be better off.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2013 9:31 PM

Dear Pixies: Harley Flanagan is available.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2013 11:29 PM

get that older English bassist who jammed with the survivors of Nirvana.

Posted by Anonymous | June 17, 2013 12:05 AM

the only acceptable replacement is the other deal sister. it would be hilarious actually.

the sonic equivalent of a grocery cart falling down 14 flights´╗┐ of metal stairs,,,

People are blowing this way out of proportion. She was trying to downplay the question about what the interviewer no doubt referred to as her "simple brilliance". She wasn't trying to lay down some kind of bass gospel to be debated about. Play the Damn thing however you want, nobody cares. I love watching people go crazy on a bass, but it loses it's novelty pretty quick, same goes for guitar, drums, whatever. ´╗┐
