Son Volt @ MHOW, 6/15/2013
Of course, sales of albums and tickets aren't necessarily the true measure of achievement, and Farrar and his bandmates seemed quite happy to be perched on their own rung on the ladder of success. Well, maybe "happy" isn't exactly the right word, because no one has ever accused Farrar of being a happy guy. His stage presence is nearly nonexistent, and he spoke only a handful of words throughout the band's 90-minute show. His singing voice doesn't have much range, either, but it rings true, and in country music, that's what matters most. Fortunately, guitarist Gary Hunt and bassist Andrew Duplantis stepped in to add some occasional vocal harmonies because a night of nothing but Farrar's vocals could prove quite soporific. - [Albany Times Union]After hitting Albany (where the above review is from), Son Volt's tour rolled into NYC over the weekend for two shows -- Friday (6/14) at Bowery Ballroom and Saturday (6/14) at Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the Northside Festival. Colonel Ford (aka all of Son Volt except frontman Jay Farrar) opened the show. Pictures from Saturday's show (including one of the setlist) are in this post.
