The Northside Festival
If you read BV regularly, you probably know the Northside Festival kicks off today in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. If you have a badge, you can use it to get in to any official Northside showcase but admission is based on capacity. If it’s a show you really want to go to, make sure to get there early, especially at smaller venues. All Northside showcases listed below are indicated as such in the event title.

Swans, Chelsea Wolfe @ Warsaw (Northside)
If you’re looking for the darkest, most terrifying thing at this year’s Northside Festival, head to Warsaw for the great double billing of Swans (who are apparently working on a new album) and Chelsea Wolfe (who is definitely releasing a new album). And bring earplugs.

Iceage, A Place to Bury Strangers, Lower & more @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Northside)
Another dark (literally, Iceage usually plays with the lights off) is the Iceage show at Music Hall of Williamsburg with fellow Danish punks Lower and Brooklyn shoegazers A Place to Bury Strangers. There’s also some pretty solid (and also loud) local support that’s been added to open the night, Bennio Qwerty and Bambara.

The Julie Ruin, Body/Head, Majical Cloudz, Foreplay @ Saint Vitus (Northside)
And if you’re into all of the above dark, noisy options, Pitchfork’s Northside showcase at Saint Vitus provides that as well with Kathleen Hanna‘s new band The Julie Ruin and Kim Gordon‘s noise guitar duo with Bill Nace, Body/Head. That bill also includes upcoming Canadian pop duo Majical Cloudz and Foreplay.

Soko @ McKittrick Hotel
French singer Soko is in NYC to celebrate the US release of her debut album, I Thought I Was An Alien, at two sorta upscale release shows at McKittrick Hotel (6 PM and 8:30).

Cody ChesnuTT @ SOB’s
Ahead of Cody ChesnuTT‘s free show opening for Mavis Staples in Prospect Park tomorrow, he’ll play his own, smaller, not-free show at SOB’s tonight.

Julian Lynch & The Luyas @ 285 Kent (Northside)
Who would you rather see live, Julian Lynch featuring The Luyas or The Luyas featuring Julian Lynch? Luckily, tonight you won’t have to decide, as the two acts will be brining their collaborative tour to 285 Kent as part of Northside Festival. The bill’s rounded out by local regulars Twin Sister and Ava Luna.

Ivan & Alyosha @ Europa (Northside)
Ivan & Alyosha were last here for a Santos show in April, and they return tonight for a Europa show with Neulore and Gondola.

Junip, Quadron, Barbarossa @ Highline Ballroom
Swedish hushed folkmaster Jose Gonzalez is back in town with his band Junip and they will be headlining Highline Ballroom tonight. Playing with them will be Quadron, who have Robin Hannibal of Rhye as a member and collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, and Barbarossa, who also plays as a member of Junip.

Bobby Rush @ MetroTech Commons
The free 2013 BAM R&B Festival continues today at noon at MetroTech Commons with a set from soul veteran Bobby Rush.

Bleached @ Knitting Factory (Northside)
The California band were here not that long ago, but the warmer weather seems much more appropriate for their sunny melodies. Support comes from quality locals Butter the Children and Pop Zeus. Tickets are still available.

Chickfactor 21 w/ Dump, Jim Ruiz Set, Lois @ The Bell House
It was a major bummer when Scotland’s The Pastels canceled their appearance at this, the third night of indiepop zine Chickfactor’s 21’s anniversary, but it’s still a crazy-good line-up with a rare appearance by Minneapolis’ great The Jim Ruiz Set, plus Lois, Dump (James of Yo La Tengo), and newly-added appearances by Richard Davies. and Joe Pernice. Maybe the latter will bring his New Mendicants partner (and Toronto neighbor) Norman Blake with him? Tickets are still available.

Mac Demarco @ Savannah Stopover 2013 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)

Mac DeMarco, White Fence, Walter TV @ Brooklyn Bowl (Northside)
We’re still waiting for cut-up Mac Demarco to get his own TV show but in the meantime you can enjoy the wacky hi-jinx (and some pretty great songs too) at Brooklyn Bowl with fellow Vancouverites Walter TV and the ultra-prolific White Fence (who play twice tomorrow).

Radiation City, Everest Cale & more @ Paper Box
The second of two NYC dates for Portland’s charming Radiation City whose new album, Animals in the Median, takes ’60s sunshine pop drops a few Pacific Northwest clouds on it.

Grouplove, Alpine @ Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park Bandshell
We’re not so into the headliner, but it might be worth showing up early for the effervescent pop of Australia’s Alpine.

Ra Ra Riot, We Were Promised Jetpacks @ Stone Pony
If you’re not doing the whole Northside thing, and would rather head to Asbury Park, there’s a solid bill of poppy indie from Ra Ra Riot and We Were Promised Jetpacks at the Stone Pony.

Joseph Arthur, Rene Lopez @ Bowery Ballroom
Now will his van safely back in his possession so he can can fully concentrate on his art, Joseph Arthur has a new album’s worth of songs to play this evening.

Chad Valley, Kisses, Ice Choir, Selebrities, Rush Midnight & more @ Cameo Gallery (Northside)
A showcase for (mostly) bands on the Cascine label, few Northside shows have such a cohesive line-up. Do you like ’80s sythpop with big melodies, an aloof air, occasionally enveloped in a gauzy haze? You’ll like every band on this bill.

There’s a bunch of other solid Northside shows too like:

* Yvette, Alan Watts, Courtship Ritual, The Flag, Breeding Program @ Muchmore’s
* Hector’s Pets, Numerators, The Neighbors, Big Ups, Weird Womb @ Silent Barn
* Conveyor, Arms, The City and Horses, Miniboone, Chris Mills, Trummors @ Spike Hill

Check out our Northside guide for even more.

New Kids On The Block, 98°, Boyz II Men @ Izod Center
Relive your childhood with a trio of boy bands all way past grown up. Can they still hit the high notes? Can you?
