"We're not a daytime band, this is weird," said Mish Way of White Lung during her band's set at the third annual 4Knots Music Festival on the South Street Seaport on Saturday (6/29). It's true that they're better fit for smaller, darker spaces, but despite that comment, White Lung continue to prove how powerful they can be on any stage. Even a hot outdoor sunny one.

Other bands sounded great under the sun too (which burned off any threats of thunderstorms), like Hunters (who already seem to know how to do a festival show), Parquet Courts, who were noisier than I'd see them before, The Men, who delivered their ever-changing brand of punk with country jams running through their whole set, the garage-soul of Reigning Sound, and of course Kurt Vile, who's arguably a better fit for an outdoor show than a dark venue. Kurt and his band (new drummer included) played an excellent set heavy on the first half of his new album, Wakin On A Pretty Daze, and revisited the past for live staples like a solo acoustic performance of "Peeping Tomboy" and the set-ending noise jam, "Freak Train."

On the second stage, which was a more of a proper setup than last year's more DIY feel, there was Heliotropes (laying down Sabbath-y riffs), Fat Tony (who rapped about Guinness beer), The Babies (terrific as always), and proggy hammer-on queen, Marnie Stern.

It was an all-around good-vibes day of free music. More pictures from 4Knots 2013 below...

a lot of 5/6 chicks in bands these days.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:24 PM

Scissors?! Really?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:29 PM

Best sets:
1) The Men
2) Parquet Courts
3) White Lung

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:34 PM

Besides Parquet Courts and The Men, so many of these bands had the most boring bass players I've ever seen. The chick from White Lung looked like she glued her feet to the stage the entire set.

Posted by JT | July 1, 2013 12:45 PM

looks uncomfortable sitting on splintered wood in the hot sun attending a party that was so much better 5 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:48 PM

nah, its was pretty comfortable

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 12:59 PM

Bass players are supposed to be boring.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:01 PM

I like Kurt Vile, but after a while all his stuff starts to sound the same. Same tempo, same drone-y wall of sound, same "yeeeeeah"

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:03 PM

wood wasn't even splintered, stop being a dick

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:04 PM

1:01 must listen to boring music.

Bring back Siren Fest.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:13 PM

oh please...the siren fest sucked. it was a hot ass tarmac in coney island. i grew up over there and ive never seen a good band play siren.

the men and parquet courts and reigning sound were great. too many chillwave fans came in for kurt vile's set...and he kind of sucked too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:22 PM

never seen a good band play siren? modest mouse, broken social scene, stephen malkmus, yeah yeah yeahs, tv on the radio, the kills, spoon and many others played. i consider them good.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:32 PM

Siren sucked? No good bands? Siren had some amazing bands: Superchunk, Modest Mouse, Guided by Voice. Even the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which I never thought I would like, played a great set.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:32 PM

No more free shows. Charge for everything - keep the riff raff out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:36 PM

^ why did you take tvotr, the kills and steve malkmus out the second type you typed that?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:37 PM

built to spill played one year...that was awesome!

Pizza Uno is sorely missed.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:51 PM

Is Siren Fest no more?

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:51 PM

This is a much better location than Siren. Though I wish they didn't corral off the people that want to drink.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:55 PM

132 but remember how far you had to stay back to watch those bands with 50000 people?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 1:56 PM

Not only were Siren Fest lineups better, they usually had bands right at the right times, like YYYs in 2002. Still one of the best live show experiences I've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 2:16 PM

2013: Hair dye + Leggings > Talent

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 2:26 PM

Siren was vastly superior, and Kurt Vile blew, but it was still a nice reason to have a couple beers in the sun.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 3:02 PM

I miss the Siren Fest!

Posted by Pete | July 1, 2013 4:10 PM

Siren was cool, would go down and drink on the beach early on, maybe head over to the stage if there was a band I wanted to see early, and then would go over as the bands I wanted to see started to come on

guy who says siren never had a good band either only learned of siren in its like last 2 years or just doesnt like music, you may not have liked every band they had but they had so many different ones that it would be hard to say none were good if you are an 'indie rock' fan

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2013 4:23 PM

I'm stoked I didn't go to that

I guess young people can look bored at concerts too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2013 12:15 PM

when the Men played, what was that opening instrumental thing? it sounded really great.

South Street Seaport is the worst but Parquet Courts, White Lung, Marnie Stern & Hunters were pretty great.

Wow yr cool yep yep. Putting out a country album two years after a noise record is total opportunism. Maybe they just don't want to keep releasing the same album over and over and don't give a fuck what assholes like you think about their artistic choices?

The Philadelphia phenom Kurt Vile is readying his next installment on Matador Records ... the much acclaimed singer-songwriter has a new album called Walkin On A Pretty Daze. "Walkin On A Pretty Day" is the first advance track, and it's being offered as an MP3 or in the player below.
