Afro-Punk Fest 2012 (more by Gretchen Robinette)

The Afro-Punk Festival is returning to Fort Greene's Commodore Barry Park from August 24-25 this year. The Brooklyn festival lineup is great as always, and includes some of our favorite newer rappers like Danny Brown, Mykki Blanco, and Le1f; New Orleans bounce artist Big Freedia, legendary punks Death, younger punks Trash Talk, Chuck D of Public Enemy and DJ Lord performing Fear of a Black Planet, Questlove, Jean Grae, Saul Williams, K-os and more TBA. The festival is open to all ages, and totally free, but you do have to RSVP. You can also donate on paypal for "fast pass admission" tickets.

Pretty awesome line-up! How was it last year? I bet it's more organized than what Todd P can pull off...

Unlocking the Truth hits the fest circuit.

It was totally great last year. TV on the Radio, Janelle Monae, etc. Big space, not too jerky.

Not sure what the "Fast Pass" thing entails. Reeks of conspiracy to me...

say what you will but trash talk always put on a pretty crazy spectacle.

Is the RSVP good for both days?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2013 11:41 AM

Last year's AP was just ok for me. The Saturday day show had a lot of "I wanna see you put your hands in the air" kind of thing. Nice vibe, nobody got shot, but the music just was nothing special. Also there are about a 100 t-shirt vendors all pretty much selling the same thing- generic black centric designs. Ok stuff but not much variety/ creativity.

1141 I have the same question as well. Just rsvped for Saturday and I can't for Sunday...

Last year was fun, but by the time the headliners went on it was impossible to move between the two stages.

I only went Saturday last year. Good times watching skaters and seeing Das Racist but left during Erykah Badu because it wasn't audible.

I RSVP'd with a +1 but can also not tell if the RSVP is good for both days and it also makes no mention of the +1...

white people who RSVP will not be let in. Dont even try it.

This was great last year. The park is huge and I would be extremely surprised if the free RSVP hits capacity. It didnt last year. I suspect they are just trying to recoup some money with the fastpass.

I grew up in a very diverse area, and was always shocked that there weren't more black, and Hispanic kids at the shows. In my neighborhood we were all into hiphop, but I was the only one who was in the punk rock scene. I used to BEG them to come to a punk, or ska, or HC show with me. Not one neighborhood friend ever did in all the years I was going.

the true question is why even give so much importance to such an aesthetic look or materialism the actual color of your hair or clothes.. Seriously lets keep it real your body is the most beautiful thing not what you wear.. so quit fronting and making yourself try to be real while still keeping up with a "punk" look.. Clothes dont mean shit its about what your body looks like.. love your body not the bullshit clothes you think are 'rad'
