Deafheaven @ Public Assembly (more by Greg Cristman)

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Deafheaven, Marriages, Nothing @ Saint Vitus Bar
California's Deafheaven are often lumped in with metal bands because of their lineage, but they shouldn't be. On the band's new LP, Sunbather, shoegaze takes precedent over black metal, making for a beautiful and thoughtful listen. Marriages supports, but don't miss Nothing if you like your shoegaze on the heavy side. Sold out, but you can also check out Deafheaven/Marriages at 285 Kent on Thursday (7/40.

Future Punx, Spires, The Capitalist Kids, The New Rochelles @ The Grand Victory
Been wondering what happened to Fergus & Geronimo's Jason Kelly since that band called it quits? He now fronts Future Punx, who play tonight with up-and-comers Spires and a couple poppy punk bands (The Capitalist Kids, The New Rochelles).

Beginnings w/ Talib Kweli, Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller, Xenia Rubios@ UCB East
NYC comedy duo Wrestling Team (aka Mark Bisi and Andy Beckerman) do their live Beginnings podcast taping tonight at UCB East, where they'll be talking to rapper Talib Kweli, Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller about how they got their start, and the musical guest will be the recently profiled Brooklyn musician Xenia Rubinos.

Small Black (DJ), Beach Fossils (DJ), Bottle Rockets (DJ) @ The DL
Small Black played a live set at MHOW on Sunday (6/30), and tonight they'll be DJing a party at The DL. Beach Fossils and Bottle Rockets will be DJing tonight too.

Illumntr, Royal Canoe, Deidre & The Dark @ Cameo Gallery
Winnepeg, MB's Royal Canoe highlight this bill of synthpop, that includes locals Illumntr and Savoir Adore offshoot Deidre & The Dark.

Starlight Girls, Zula, The Tony Castles, Ursula Starship @ Glasslands
A nice line-up of locals, including the retro-a-go-go of Starlight Girls, and wistful indie rockers Tony Castles.

Janeane Garofalo, Chris Lamberth, Diano Spechler, Vinny Deponto @ Union Hall
Ever wonder what pop culture Janeane Garofalo obsesses over? We're pretty sure it's '90s indie rock, but find out for certain tonight as she appears at tonight's Geeking Out with hosts Kerri Doherty & Nate Fernald.

For more laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Ian Hunter @ Maxwell's
The Mott the Hoople frontman will make his way to Hoboken for a sold-out show at the soon-to-close Maxwell's tonight. The intimate show will be a nice setting to see him in, but if you didn't get tickets, you can catch him NYC again this September, when he hits City Winery for two shows.

Heart, Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience @ PNC Bank Arts Center
This classic rock tour, which already hit the NYC-area for a show at Jones Beach last week, will pass through NJ for another one tonight at PNC Bank Arts Center.

The Pietasters @ City Winery (FREE)
Relive that time when you were 12 and loved ska with long-running Pietasters, who play today's installment of the free Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival. 5 PM.

Set times for Deafheaven?

it's funny, there's a hipster barber shop in the Mission of SF that gives everyone 1930's gangster haircuts, hence the deafheaven look.

1:49, do you need a hug? you are cranky. wasn't saying that at all, just postulating where deafheaven gets their haircuts.

uncomfortable: realizing that the world would objectively improve if you remove yourself from it.

I hate shows at 285 Kent. That room sucks. The sound sucks. It's hot as fuck. Like, why even bother going to see a band you like there? I'd rather just throw my money for the cover in the trash.

Saint Vitus > 285 Kent.

Dude from Deafheaven looks like a wannabe Nazi Brandon Flowers.

Yeah not bad. Dreamhouse has some nice riffing but to be honest i think this album is a bit overrated but to each his own. At least this band doesn't consist of assholes like Liturgy .

Ever had that feeling like you've heard this song from somewhere (not GTA V) and you can't recall where? I swear to god it drives me nuts because I know I've heard this song from somewhere.
