Death Grips at MHOW in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Death Grips

One of the bands booked to play the second day (8/3) of Lollapalooza 2013 was Death Grips, who never showed up. According to the festival's representatives (via Chicago Tribune), Death Grips "chose not to arrive in Chicago." Their set would have followed a Friday night official aftershow at Bottom Lounge, which they also didn't show up for. A representative from that venue wrote (via Pitchfork):

We are still getting bits and pieces of information but we were not aware that Death Grips was not coming until right before we made the announcement. Right now, we just want to thank all the people at the show last night who, despite being terribly disappointed that there would be no Death Grips show, were very understanding. Tickets are in the process of being refunded and people that bought tickets online will see their refunds on their statements shortly.
Apparently, as multiple Reddit users have pointed out, before the venue announced the band weren't playing, a suicide note allegedly written by a Death Grips fan was projected onto a backdrop at the venue, as Death Grips' music played through the PA. Reddit users also say that angered fans destroyed the drum set on stage, which DNA Info reports was a child's learning drum kit set up by the band's tour manager.

That same article said:

Death Grips' management repeatedly told Bottom Lounge employees the band "was on their way, only to be told by the same tour manager that the stage set up and the Death Grips album being played 'was the show,'" said Erin O'Neal, marketing director for Bottom Lounge. "It appears to us that despite having a signed contract, they never intended on performing last night and instead wanted to leave a room of disappointed fans."
The band themselves have not commented on the cancellations yet, but they did post a facebook post today that reads "FYF SAT AUG 24 2013 LOS ANGELES CA." That post already has multiple comments including "You guys gonna actually show to that one?" and "Great show in Chicago guys! Thanks!"

They also aren't showing up to Montreal's Osheaga Festival, which they were supposed to play this weekend as well, according to Osheaga's facebook.

UPDATE: Death Grips cancelled other upcoming dates, including the shows they would have played at Royale (8/6) in Boston and Webster Hall (8/7) in NYC with Pictureplane this week. Refunds for those shows are available at point of purchase.

You may remember that this isn't the first time Death Grips pulled a stunt like this.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:37 PM

That's what you get, homos.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:41 PM

Art and mental illness overlap, but maybe these guys are just fucking nuts.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:47 PM

the hummus on tour hasn't been up to par... ending tour until this injustice is resolved.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:49 PM

"art"

Least applicable word to use when discussing any band nowadays

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:49 PM

i love giving an extra $13 dollars in fees away to ticketmaster. fuck these guys

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:57 PM

^ticketmaster fees dont come back when getting a refund? that sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 6:59 PM

Kaufman-esque brilliance or Amateur hour bullshit? Surely the latter.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:08 PM

I'm enjoying their art and drug fueled antics.

Sorry?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:17 PM

@7:17, so you like this band and you are enjoying them canceling shows?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:19 PM

Haha no Death Grips 4 you. Might as well get the wife/kid combo nukkas!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:23 PM

Why would any of you people still be a fan of this group? Every chance they get , they give a big fuck you to all their fans by doing shit like this. I guess you guys love the punishment, or are so stupid you think these guys are cool and rebelious. If this is going to be the mentality of future bands, then music is in a sad state.

Posted by o0 | August 4, 2013 7:34 PM

These guys don't eat hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:42 PM

Didn't death grips basically copy this song? or sample it? I don't see it mentioned as sample material though.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:45 PM

These guys seem like a great band. They forgot to actually play music. Fuck these guys.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:47 PM

gotta say... this is a really clever way to distill your fans. i'll never stop trying to see these guys live. they're far, far better than most shit out there.

Posted by valentine | August 4, 2013 7:52 PM

I heard they all consumed tainted hummus and got deathly ill.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:54 PM

7:52, what the fuck do you listen to that shitgrips are better?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 7:58 PM

7:58 they're better because they are more raw and more interesting than most other music. and their calculations are about destruction, not cash. i can get behind that.

Posted by valentine | August 4, 2013 8:26 PM

They are fucking lots of people by doing this. And Pictureplane gets screwed, too. He's a real artist and shows up for all his shows, never pulls shit like this. Because it's about respect. I hope he has some other shows lined up very soon.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:34 PM

they just don't give a fuck about performing for people; they like to make music. and sometimes they like to go nuts and play that music, but they don't wanna trek around the country doing 'the death grips' show so they just cut and run once they get bored on tour, or once something else seems more interesting.

they're not in it for the money, or the fans.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:36 PM

Pictureplane plays way too many shows already; I think it's been maybe five or six times in nyc this year alone? I think he'll survive, that class act him.

Long live death grips.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:40 PM

"they just don't give a fuck about performing for people; they like to make music. and sometimes they like to go nuts and play that music, but they don't wanna trek around the country doing 'the death grips' show so they just cut and run once they get bored on tour, or once something else seems more interesting."

Then don't book tours...

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:43 PM

Then why book tours, just do random shows whenever they feel like it

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:54 PM

Pictureplane hasn't played that many shows this year (though he did play a lot last year). But yes, my point is, if you're gonna do art and not give a fuck, don't screw other artists in the process.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 8:58 PM

"Pictureplane plays way too many shows already; I think it's been maybe five or six times in nyc this year alone? I think he'll survive, that class act him."

That's because he lives in Brooklyn and isn't a big enough name to only play here on tour like some other Brooklyn based groups, or be too unknown you would never pay attention to him like the rest of the bands/acts here.

I'm sure a lot of people would love to see Death Grips, myself included, but the fact they keep pulling shit like this isn't cool. It screws over a lot of people and now whenever they announce a show here again, you'll have no idea if they'll actually end up playing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 9:26 PM

the message at the end of this song speaks all http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL7-CKirWZE

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 9:29 PM

They're actually paying homage to great hiphop acts of the past. Many of them enjoyed not showing up to play. De La Soul, Wu-Tang, Tribe, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 9:36 PM

Best band ever. All haters are "dad rock" consumer.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 10:01 PM

Are these guys blackened hip hop? Because I only listen to things that are blackened.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 10:29 PM

gluten-free grape soda

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 10:30 PM

Podunk show still on. YEAH!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 10:42 PM

How do you guys grip pita triangles? Is a 3 finger grip the optimum grip? I have a fancy dinner party an need to know how to grip them properly. Any assistance in this would be appreciated.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 10:50 PM

10:29 wins.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 11:18 PM

@10:50 your mom says to use three fingers. She like when I use three fingers. Use three fingers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 11:21 PM

'Death Grips' is probably the best name of a shitty band, ever. It's too bad their music or loyalty to fans isn't as good as their band name.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 11:27 PM

I'd hate to be anyone (manager, tour manager, agend) who has to represent these assclowns. I can't see these guys keeping representation much longer.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 11:32 PM

agend = agent.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2013 11:33 PM

This is what happens when the Internet music community decides to give to much hype to a bunch of untalented heroine addicts

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 12:01 AM

Who doesnt like heroines

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 12:15 AM

and WME reps this clown shit? fuckin weak.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 12:47 AM

They are like GG Allin, the Sex Pistols and NWA rolled into one, and then multiplied by 1000. Put them on the cover of Rolling Stone asap.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 1:00 AM

8:36pm Actually they do give a fuck about performing for people on a basic level else they wouldn't book shows and tours, idiot. On a real world level they better start giving a fuck about showing up to play shows and tours because they're not making enough money from record and download sales to make a living being showflakes (my word haha.) Their fanbase doesn't have the mentality to order merchandise online enough for them to live off that and music sales. I'd imagine they have lost and almost lost quite a few fans from this stunt or lack of caring. I wouldn't be surprised if fests and promoters don't book them and why should they? I'm giving a Friday or Saturday night to a band who has a history of no-shows? Fuck that. If Bowery Presents, Live Nation NYC, and AEG Live don't want to book them they are finished playing NYC cuz those promotion companies own and control the venues they need to play to play NYC unless they want to go the multiple shows at a small venue route which I doubt as they don't have the work ethic to do that. Remember these idiots lucked into their signing, they don't have a fucking clue about actual work - kinda hard to have one when you never did it.

Death Grips can go fuck themselves for flaking out because they deprived a slot for a band who really wanted to play these shows.

They're in it for the money and the fans else they wouldn't have a record label, a booking agent, a manager, a publicist, and several social media accounts their fans and the public at large i.e. potential new fans can check. What it is is they think they're all that when they can be broken in two like a breadstick if they piss off the wrong people. If they're dropped by their booking agency and/or record label, they're done.

They don't give a fuck and to the other idiot who said De La Soul, Wu-Tang, and Tribe routinely blew off shows, yeah, look where they are now. Wu-Tang can suck my dick - most overrated rap artist ever.

Posted by D | August 5, 2013 1:02 AM

Oh yeah, spare me the bullshit that this band doesn't care about making money. When you sign to a major label, have management, a booking agent/agency, a guarantee, and a publicist, and you play fests (you feel like showing up to), you care about making money, don't get it twisted that this band is some music art noise troupe or hardcore punk band who doesn't care.

And that's another thing:

STOP LIKING THIS BAND TO A HARDCORE PUNK BAND! They are not that. They are the Cerebral Ballzy of rappers: lucky idiots who knew and blew the right people to get what they got. Fuck 'em both.

Posted by D | August 5, 2013 1:17 AM

Whoa now killer. Death grips actually have made great music. Cerebal ballzy have made nothing but kitsch shit that no one even remembers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 1:30 AM

another stunt to get their name in the news again so more people will look them up.

zach hill was in hella and that band wasn't "punk" at all.

this band relies on publicity to build a fanbase instead of actually releasing good music. it's different, yeah, but it's dumb.

no one will care in five years.

remember salem?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 2:26 AM

Another lengthy submission from d. Thank goodness

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 2:26 AM

How are death grips any different from crazy titch & trim? Its the same sound, but copied.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 2:27 AM

It's one thing to be an artist and be true to your art, not caving into corporate or commercial pressures, but it's another thing if you're gonna be a bunch of flakes... if that's the type of artist you want to be, then don't get an agent, and don't get booked into commitments that you can't/won't keep. Assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 8:04 AM

hugest a-holes making "music" today.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 8:23 AM

Why can't we have festivals like this in NYC?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 9:01 AM

^ Festivals where the performers no show?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 9:14 AM

There OK for a hardcore band I guess. To bad they bailed, it would have been fun for those Chicago kids to taste some real hardcore for a change.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 9:16 AM

Ha ha. "fans" who rarely pay for the music they listen to get all up in arms when the tables get turned. I hope Death Grips keeps taking your money.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 10:08 AM

8:26- PLEASE tell me you aren't naive enough to buy into that. This is an attempt to manage an image, nothing more.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 10:34 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 10:36 AM

They were great at Music Hall. Too bad you losers missed the bus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 11:26 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 2:27 PM

oh wow look pictureplane already has another nyc date scheduled next week - so you "fans" acting butthurt on behest of him can shut the fuck up about that.

over. saturated.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 2:55 PM

11:30, better yet, D claimed that Wu Tang is a "rap artist".

Sounds like a mom-move to me.. "you kids like the WooTang guy these days?"

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 3:29 PM

More like Death Throes for this media entity/non-band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 3:35 PM

This band is like the Moon Landing... are they even a thing?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 3:52 PM

You guys, what did we do before jordon came on the site at 3:00 every day to SPAM old posts and throw off the Most Recent list?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 4:09 PM

these guys in it for dope money?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 5:08 PM

Welp. I'm not going to ever book them. I was willing to give them a very large percentage (even willing to forfeit my payment) as well. It's a shame because Zach Hill has really been influential to me. Interesting idea (not much has been mentioned about the instillation aspect). Perhaps it's more about how its a gathering of like-minded individuals and it is not necessary for them to puppet about. The suicide note would point in that direction as well. To not put so much emphasis on others. Pretty literal symbols if you ask me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 7:12 PM

Didactic though. I go back and forth as to whether they wanted to teach or if they are following their own preaching and focusing on themselves/not caring. But if they went through the trouble (I say this lightly because its really not all that much trouble to set this up) of "staging" this it points to them preaching rather than not caring. Otherwise there wouldn't be anything set up/to ponder.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 7:26 PM

Yeah, 2:55, I'm a Pictureplane fan. What the fuck do you care? I'm glad for any gigs he has, his shows are consistently good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 8:29 PM

Death Grips should take a page from Barry Manilow. A true entertainer he never cancels. So Uncool.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 8:39 PM

Who the hell cares about this band?!? They have been canceling shows like this last time as well. They obviously don't care about playing or their fans.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 9:32 PM

What's cool about this is that if they ever come back around they're so blacklisted they'd have to play in a really shitty tiny venue. Would be a cool show, assuming they show up of course.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 10:34 PM

How is Zach Hill doing a soundtrack now according to his wikipedia?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 11:29 PM

haha, shout out to all the wiggas in Podunk, IA!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2013 11:39 PM

What the fuck is Wu Tang then shithead? Performance art? Fuck them.

Death Grips are lucky idiots, nothing more, nothing less, and if they're not careful, they'll be dropped by their booking agency because their no-shows reflect on the booking agency.

What venue in their right mind would risk booking DG for a Friday or Saturday show? I'd say no one after this stunt.

I could see DG spinning it that they're "blacklisted" to which I say bullshit they're just flakes no one's gonna risk losing a prime night over.

Posted by D | August 6, 2013 6:05 AM

I would love to see a picture of D in real life. I feel like I wouldn't even know what to expect.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2013 6:49 AM

Hi D. I was (I thought) clearly making fun of De La Soul, Tribe, Wu-Tang for fucking over their fans routinely like these fucking losers are doing. Looks like I started a war over Wu-Tang in the process. My point was fuck them all.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2013 8:44 AM

All good 8:44am and I seriously doubt Shaolin's in the house with Samurai swords drawn :)

You're right, they're all losers who think they can treat people with disrespect and fuck them over as Ticketmaster doesn't give refunds for no-shows, something Death Grips etc. has no concept of. If you pay $20 plus $12 ticket fee to see DG and DG pulls a no-show, you're refunded $20 but shit outta luck with the $12 ticket fee, unless you dispute the charge with your credit card company.

Posted by D | August 6, 2013 9:20 AM

D just deserves to be shot...

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2013 12:26 PM

have you ever seen the type of people that attend things like Brosheaga and Perrypalooza? I'd stay home if I were in Death Grips' position as well...

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2013 12:39 PM

Hahahaha yeah I deserve to get shot because I'm sick of hearing how great they were when they weren't and cuz I'm me, whateva.

what gauge of ear stretching do you recommend d? if it better to pick up change after a windmill or the creepy crawl?

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2013 7:24 PM

Oh now I wear ear gauges? LOL.

Fuck the windmill, the creepy crawl, and picking up change.

Posted by D | August 7, 2013 12:50 AM

D,

How many years have you been a member of the nychc ?

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 1:43 AM

The NYHC scene?

Possibly as long as you have been alive or before you were born.

The windmill is not an '80s hardcore show move, it was and still is a lousy one, and the other two moves are corny.

Posted by D | August 7, 2013 3:16 AM

dear d,
when you're in brooklyn, is it still best to watch yo back?

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 8:10 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 8:40 AM

This guy is so no D. The whole cadence in the writing is off, and this imitator is getting the anger way wrong. D is always a bit bemused even in anger, this a.s.s.c.l.o.w.n needs to go back and study some of those old posts before D disappeared.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 8:41 AM

I don't have to watch my back in Brooklyn or anywhere else. No one does really, not even Harley Flanagan.

It's me because I have always shot back at people who call me names, and I was bemused in this post when someone said I wear ear gauges.

9:21 Hard-core.

10:24 Quoting "Injustice System" by Sick Of It All I see haha.

2:38 Reinterpretation? The windmill didn't exist at '80s NYHC shows.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 10:26 PM

10:26, fucking legend.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2013 10:41 PM

Someone book Death Grips then tell them they can't play when they show up.

Posted by D | August 8, 2013 1:08 AM

People should book daft grips, and always promise to put out good music and great shows. But, always disappoint the fans and fall through never having them. As this happens, we can all communally sit in a circle listening to chic using pita chips as shovels to stuff our faces with hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2013 2:12 AM

Are death grips one of those chill wave revival bands that crave 2009 nostalgia?

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2013 2:26 AM

Someone should book the band, and make a loophole saying the band will be forced to pay a huge sum in the contract. No way that death grips read their fucking contracts, and I think their label dropped em.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2013 2:27 AM

^ Nah just book them then have them show up and tell them they're not playing because that's what they get for dicking out on shows.

Posted by D | August 8, 2013 2:33 AM

2:33, that works too. If I booked shows Id do it in a heart beat.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2013 2:42 AM

Someone please book Death Grips at least 200 miles away from their location and not let them play when they show up.

Hey Brian,

You're the man. Enjoy being a 43 year old loser with no insurance, poor health care, no education, high levels of debt, a shitty appartment, and a drug addiction. Go fuck yourself while you are at it too. Then remidn yourself that you work for a shitty band that no one gives a fuck about. If any of you od no one will care.

The Reason why their beats will be such a consistent mind fuck through out how ever long they want to continue this will be because of Zach Hill. That guy is a fucking vicious beast of a drummer, his works with Mick Barr and Hella showcases just how experimental he can get as far as rhythmic patterns. And Flatlander's work on Synths and Field Recordings just compliments everything perfectly.
