"Ninety minutes of Prince at City Winery tonight. Great set. Shorter than usual, but that new song "Big City" was SO GOOD. VMAs weekend." - Erik Sutch

"Back from a secret Prince-New Power Generation reunion at City Winery. My funk levels have been recharged for the year. That man is God." - Chris McCoy

Prince & NPG @ City Winery - 8/22/2013

New Power Generation, Prince's sometimes backing band, are in the midst of their "Purple Week" residency at City Winery, for which they've been promising "special celebrity guests nightly." The first night included Alice Smith at the early show and no guests at the late show, but at last night's (8/22) late show, Prince himself showed up.

The venue announced a little before 11:30 that Prince would be appearing at the midnight show, and admission would be cash at the door. A recap from the Prince message boards reads:

Just got in from City Winery.....Let me just say that History was made in NYC this morning. First NYC show with NPG and 3RDEYE Girl together....well sought of.....night started with Shelby and amazing horns of the NPG....then Liz performed a song.....then a great new talent Luke James performed a great new song........then something purple happened....drummer leaves and hear comes Hanna....then Donna takes her position .....then Ida and finally the man of the hour......Staring with Musicology..with eleven piece horns,,,,,,,AMAZING without being complete and in no particular order.....Musicology, Something in the Water Does not Compute, All the Critics Love You in New York, Brown Skin, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough/Cool (with Doug E Fresh), Nothing Compares 2 U and Big City......crowd was capacity of 500 and show started 1235 am...Prince enters stage 1:30 am....show was over at 3:00 AM
Pictures from the show are in this post, but... UPDATE: none of Prince .

In addition to releasing his own new singles lately, Prince also appears on the new Janelle Monae album. Janelle's not playing this year, but she's a multi-year veteran of Brooklyn's Afro-Punk Festival, which goes down this weekend.

NPG's residency continues with a late show tonight (8/23) and then the final (and most expensive) one is a late show on Sunday (8/25), which doubles as a VMAs after party. No word yet on whether or not Prince will be appearing at that show, or the VMAs.

Good, now all the naysayers who said Liv and Shelby and the rest of the NPG horn players weren't part of P's band have now been schooled, that Liv and Shelby and the other npg horn players are part of the band.

I bet all the people who went on night 1 are a bit depressed.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 9:38 AM

No way! They got Alice Smith!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 9:44 AM

No setlist? WTF?

Very jealous. Sounds incredible.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 10:25 AM

Did Prince play any guitar?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 10:26 AM

prince is good

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 10:35 AM

Prince played guitar but did not solo during a Doug E Fresh beatboxing performance - he basically riffed with Doug E

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 10:48 AM

Did he play any good songs? Are these songs good? Wouldn't that be the greatest travesty of our lives if Prince has been making good music for the past 20 years but he fell out of favor and so we all missed out on it? Or did he only have so many good songs in him like most songwriters?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 10:53 AM

It was ALL good. Every single second.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:02 AM

don't think that's really prince. looks like some guy in disguise.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:10 AM

Oh, it was really him. No doubt about that. Trust me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:19 AM

so basically nobody with a regular job could have attended this show?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:26 AM

"so basically nobody with a regular job could have attended this show?"

Ah yes, the poor oppressed employed.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:42 AM

^^^not necessarily, if you consider that most people who don't live off their parents or work at Starbucks have to be up at 5 or 6 am to get to work

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 11:59 AM

The bouncers were incredibly adamant about not taking pictures of prince. phones were confiscated.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:06 PM

hope he does schedule some shows in NYC area after the VMAs

"[Prince photos removed at City Winery's request]"

What a bullshit move by City Winery.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:12 PM

I was there, right up front. Meh. I've seen better guitar work. I left around 2, I was so bored.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:12 PM

"so basically nobody with a regular job could have attended this show?"

I once went to a Prince show that started around the same time. It was worth it to see him at a smaller club. I got little sleep, but I am not a little whiny kid, so I got over it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:18 PM

What time did he play until?? I left around three. please don't say he came back out!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:22 PM

11:26am Most people have jobs that allow them to take the occasional day. Unless you used up your sick days from nights before snorting coke off the asses of ten year-old boys.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:22 PM

Sometimes, even if you work a day job, you need to stay up late for fun to happen. If the late hour is what prevented you from seeing this, then I truly feel sorry for you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:26 PM

Hell, I'm employed and at work... Prince is playing a club show? Sleep can wait! Was EPIC!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 12:29 PM

"Sometimes, even if you work a day job, you need to stay up late for fun to happen. If the late hour is what prevented you from seeing this, then I truly feel sorry for you."

This.

Every once in a while you need to trade an unforgettable night for an extremely hellish work experience the following day, unless you have an essential meeting/presentation the following morning that will definitively determine your future in your profession. In those cases, you're usually just shit out of luck.

The photos posted in this article are from the early show without Prince.
There are no Prince photos due to a request from his Purpleness, not City Winery.
The late show had these "Nation of Islam" looking security guys walking around the crowd. At first I thought they were busting people for toking - but they were confiscating peoples phones who took pictures, then erasing the photo's.

12:12p - you left too early.
My only complaint is that they did not have Prince's guitar rig set-up.

Totally worth staying out late and hurting today!

Posted by spikenyc | August 23, 2013 1:07 PM

925 I said that some of the musicians in the band have not been playing with Prince. That was true until last night. I never said anything about the singers or for that matter the horn players. I was there. It was cool but not one of the better times that I've seen him. I would much rather see the 3rd Eye Girl rock show. C'mon Prince, really rock the house!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 1:18 PM

Word is he is closing out the Green Stage at Afro-Punk Fest on Sat night with 3rd Eye Girl.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 1:30 PM

^And by word, this troll means his own made up stupidity. Prince will not be at Afro-Punk fest.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 1:44 PM

"I was there, right up front. Meh. I've seen better guitar work. I left around 2, I was so bored."

Great comment, considering that he didn't do any guitar solos and only played a few backing riffs for about 2 minutes. You were up front, alright.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 1:45 PM

144 Cool, you will not be there. One less douchebag.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 2:02 PM

all those posts defending the 11:42 unemployed loser were done by the same unemployed loser

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 2:46 PM

@2:02, Oh i will be there unlike Prince. Don't get mad troll. Just crawl back under the rock you slithered out from.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 2:48 PM

A troll calling someone else a douchebag. That's rich.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 2:49 PM

1159 I don't know anyone who gets up at 5am to go to work.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 3:23 PM

3:33, amazing post.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2013 3:36 PM

Yea, so what if Prince appeared. He isn't as good as Michael Jackson, and I have proof. Prince could play instruments, but his performances were nothing close to those of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was like the GG Allin of Pop

Posted by D | August 24, 2013 12:44 AM

1:44, Prince may not be at Afro-Punk. But, Frohawk will be.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2013 12:45 AM

Wow, D is really the worst.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2013 7:45 AM

^ go back to sleep. that was a fake.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2013 9:08 AM

so where are the pics from the rest of the residency, or was it just cool enough until prince showed up

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2013 1:37 PM

who?

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 1:45 AM

Having a had time locating him in the pictures. Is he hiding inside the wall?

Posted by Skoog | August 28, 2013 8:39 AM

Prince looks better with hair, and I always knew he was effeminate but ...

Posted by Anonymous | September 10, 2013 7:56 AM

He felt so free from the Slavary of WB Records. I was happy when sign with Sony Records. He took his time working on this Album.

Posted by Katelyn | December 17, 2013 12:14 PM

This is the BEST version I heard Prince play of "Something In the Water Does Not Compute" since his 1984 rehearsal concert! Prince was on a whole other unearthly level that night!

Posted by Martin | February 6, 2014 11:13 AM

sing it.

Posted by chris | February 11, 2014 7:55 PM

yea! i love Michael Jackson! the best!

Posted by acompanhantes | April 5, 2014 9:56 AM

I love his singing style! I love her! owns a wonderful voice!

Posted by Clínicas de Massagem | April 10, 2014 8:33 AM

the voice of this woman is awesome! she sings very well, I love to hear her

Posted by massagem tantrica | May 2, 2014 7:45 AM

More of this on TV and less of the negative coverage.

Posted by Tanner | May 10, 2014 9:30 AM

Prince has been doing this for nearly 30 years. That is the only reason he didn't have even more commercial success. He has always playing with new and different sounds. He is a great genius, but it is a great to see that man at his age looking young and doing his thing!

Posted by Adalynn | May 26, 2014 12:11 PM

that Liv and Shelby and the other npg horn players are part of the band.

Posted by acompanhantessp | June 30, 2014 7:43 AM

If I could only listen to one single musical performance for the rest of my life...this might be it. Amazing performance.
