Beets

As you may know, Jackson Heights band The Beets are unabashed fans of Howard Stern and have actually appeared on the show. Howard told the band they reminded him of "his old 6th grade psychedelic band" (which he's played on his show a few times) and encouraged them to cover his songs. The Beets have done just that on a new 7" that features two Stern songs "Silver Nickels and Golden Dimes" and "Psychedelic Bee." That's the cover art above (as always by Matthew Volz) and you can stream "Silver Nickels" below. You can buy the single October 15 via Hardly Art.

The Beets have an upcoming tour on the East Coast to and from Hopscotch Festival. Upcoming NYC shows including Shea Stadium on September 21 and then opening for Parquet Courts at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 3 (tickets).

All tour dates are listed, along with the song stream (and snippets of Howard Stern's original version of "Psychedelic Bee"), below.

This band is the worst.

There should be some minimal amount of talent required to actually call yourself a band. Be able to sing, or play guitar, or keep a beat or stay in tune.
These guys can't even reach a generously low minimal standard of performance. They are literally painful to hear.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:35 PM

So bad I feel uneasy about actually mocking them because I seriously think the singer has Cerebral Palsy or something.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:38 PM

Stern was right about this band sounding like 6th graders.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:42 PM

Jewel's cover is better

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:45 PM

The beets is actually a band from a 90s tv show called "Doug" I wonder if the band knew that?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:58 PM

Wasn't this the band from Doug?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 4:58 PM

^ that was my first thought too. the band in real life is truly horrible.

Posted by edward | August 27, 2013 5:29 PM

I like the beets... their records are pretty "meh" but they're a great live band.. And Juan is one of the nicest dudes and definitely does not have cerebral palsy, jerk.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 5:38 PM

I heard they're from the show Doug

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 6:02 PM

this band has been around for like ten years.. where have you all been? not brooklyn, i'm guessing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 6:08 PM

I've seen the Beets kill it before but the last time I saw them at DBA a couple of years ago one of the dudes played while lying down on a mattress and couldn't really keep time with the rest of the band. Not really sure what happened that night?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 6:52 PM

I prefer the Electric Comic Book years

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 6:58 PM

And a bababooey to you all

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 7:00 PM

^ 'allelujah!

Also notice the Roosevelt High jackets on that cover. That's where Stern went to High School.

Hey now!

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 7:36 PM

Its a band from a 90s tv show...

Posted by TaoSystem | August 27, 2013 9:42 PM

Howard Stern wears a wig

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 10:11 PM

You're all retarded.

Posted by anonymous | August 27, 2013 10:21 PM

Hipsters in Jackson Heights? Lord Ezec DMS isn't gonna like that LOL.

Wow, we cover Howard Stern shows, sniff his ass, great career path fellas.

Posted by D | August 27, 2013 10:21 PM

^stopping calling anyone with taste in something hipsters. Its such a oversaturated term pretty much used to describe anything.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 10:46 PM

Just listen to The Shaggs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2013 10:53 PM

the beets aren't named after "doug" and juan is a good songwriter...live they're mostly hit, recorded mostly miss

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 12:00 AM

oh my god, why has no one mentioned that it's hilarious/social suicide to be an unabashed fan of howard stern

Posted by anonymous | August 28, 2013 1:56 AM

My friend, his mom, brother, & Dad all listen to Howard Stern together. It seems so weird.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 2:00 AM

@1:56

What the fuck are you talking about?

Social suicide? Do you believe in the Red Scare too?

Did your mommy and daddy give you that advice in 1993?

Do everybody a favor a kill yourself

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 8:56 AM

10:46 Truth hurts. It is "hip" or an attempt at being hip to cover songs by a guy who has millions of fans and is so popular you have to pay extra a month to see him on tv or listen to him on satellite radio (or he's included in satellite radio where the price is higher because of him.) Yeah, the world needs a band from Queens to cover a star's songs.

The Beets are "people with taste" because they cover Howard Stern's songs, gotcha. LOL. As if one has "taste" for being a fan of Howard Stern, champion of the xenophobic, misogynistic white man since the '80s.

Posted by D | August 28, 2013 1:18 PM

ohhhh weeee ohhhhh, killer tofu!

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 2:10 PM

I've met Juan once after a show - dude definitely has some sort of severe learning disabilty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 2:30 PM

Juantwo3four5? He doesn't like his car troubles! He should own a Honda! Would love to see his tweets then!

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 2:40 PM

@1:18

Looks like another guy who last heard the Stern show in 1995. Good for you buddy. Listen to everything your mom and dad tells you.

Any other advice? Don't talk candy from strangers?

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 2:41 PM

^more advice - 'Listen to everything your mom and dad tell you.'

You are using 'and' so that you are now referring to 'everything' that those two people (or they) tell you. So the subject is now plural, and thus 'tell' is the proper conjugation of tell.

Good luck on this journey we call life, my friend.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 3:50 PM

You know, 'TALKING candy from strangers' is also not the sagest advice.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 4:14 PM

Look everyone, we have a new asshole in the BV comments section: The Grammar Cop (3:50pm.)

Hmmmm. Sentences are not supposed to begin with ^. You didn't capitalize the first letter of the first word of your sentence. You used single quotation marks not the proper double quotation marks FOUR TIMES. Single quotation marks are to be used only when quoting quoted material.

Wait, you're the jerkoff who used the non-word "misunderestimating."

Posted by D | August 28, 2013 7:46 PM

Misunderestimating is a classic Bush-ism, D. The person was making fun if you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 7:50 PM

7:50 deserves a robust hummus platter.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2013 7:56 PM

7:50pm Bullshit. Get some new material.

Posted by D | August 28, 2013 10:12 PM

^ Shut the fuck up you one-note motherfucker.

Posted by D | August 28, 2013 10:12 PM

you too old for this shit D
