D'Angelo

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

D’Angelo, Questlove, Thundercat @ Williamsburg Park
With guys like Frank Ocean have taking over the spotlight lately, D’Angelo picked a good time to make his comeback, considering his brand of neo-soul likely inspired many of the current bigger names. Tonight he plays his largest headlining NYC show since his resurgence, playing outdoor Brooklyn venue Williamsburg Park. Support comes from frequent collaborator Questlove and Flying Lotus associate Thundercat.

After the show, Questlove does his weekly DJ night at Brooklyn Bowl.

The Go-Go’s, Tom Tom Club @ Seaside Summer Concerts (FREE)
If vacation was all you ever wanted but can’t seem to take a week off, how about an evening with The Go-Go’s by the beach? The Tom Tom Club open, sweetening this ’80s deal, and it’s free.

SBTRKT, Nick Hook @ Output
SBTRKT is on his way to Chicago for Lollapalooza, but first he’s stopping in NYC for a show at Williamsburg dance club Output tonight. He’s only DJing, but maybe he’s still got some surprises in store? Sold out.

Juan Atkins, Juan Maclean @ Cielo
The Detroit techno legend will go head-to-head against the DFA artist on the decks tonight. Who will be named Number Juan?

The Love Language, Eternal Summers, Alex English, Nightdogs @ Glasslands
North Carolina’s The Love Language just released their new album, Ruby Red, on Merge; tourmates Eternal Summers, meanwhile, are putting the finishing touches on their new one which is out soon. Go out and here some new tunes.

Jamie Lidell, Emily Wells, DJ Shiftee @ Le Poisson Rouge
Jamie Lidell’s funky, maximalist R&B is as fun live as it sounds on record, and while you can see it for free in Prospect Park tomorrow, if you’ve got some money to fork over, you can catch Jamie at the far more intimate Le Poisson Rouge tonight. Opening the show is Emily Wells, who mixes indie folk and hip hop, and she’s not to miss either.

Gauntlet Hair, Dinowalrus, Conveyor, Life Sized Maps @ Mercury Lounge
Chicago duo Gauntlet Hair just released their second album, Stills, via Dead Oceans. If nervous, dark (but not really gothy) postpunk is your thing, worth a listen on Spotify. The ever-morphing Dinowalrus open.

Sheila E., DJ Beverly Bond, Joanna Burns @ MetroTech Commons
The percussionist/Prince acolyte struck out on her own in the 80s, and has since amassed her own catalog of formidable funk bootyshakers. Lead the glamorous life for free today at noon

Shine Brothers, My Great Ghost, Bird Call, Vows, Friend Roulette, Ponyhof @ Pianos
Featuring former members of Black Angels and Woven Bones, The Shine Brothers band bang out fuzzy psych, as heard on their recent Burger Records release, Hello Griefbirds!

Silent Drape Runners (present: Twin Peaks: The Beginning) @ The Bell House
Tonight is the last-ever performance of Twin Peaks-obsessed experimental group and party-throwers, Silent Drape Runners. Expect them to go out with a bang…and perhaps a tiny letter under the fingernail.

Dick Dale @ The Wonder Bar
The self-proclaimed King of Surf Guitar will bring “Miserlou” and boatload of other instrumental hits (his and other folks’) to the famed Asbury Park, NJ venue tonight.

AIr Zaire, Ghengis Hans, Dances, Color War @ The Paper Box
If you’re headed to this show tonight, it’s worth catching Color War, whose synthy pop isn’t too far removed from Polica or Austra. You can stream a new track from their upcoming debut LP, “Obelisk,” below.

Other good shows tonight include Body Language, Avan Lava, Computer Magic @ Bowery Ballroom, Sonny Vincent, Barreracudas, Hector’s Pets, Dino’s Boys @ Cake Shop, and 1-800-BAND, Viva l’American Death Ray Music @ Union Pool.
