VMAs @ Barclays Center
MTV takes over Brooklyn tonight by bringing the VMAs to new-ish arena Barclays Center. Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake (joined by his old boy band, *NSYNC), and more are going to be there or are rumored to be there. It also airs online and Grimes co-hosts the red carpet report.

Goodie Mob @ Brooklyn Bowl
Cee-Lo Green may have become the man behind the polarizing, unforgettable radio hit “Fuck You” and a well-known judge on The Voice, but don’t forget that he’s also a member of one of Southern Rap’s best ever groups, Goodie Mob. Those guys will return with their first new album since 2004 this week, and tonight they’re in NYC for a relatively small show at Brooklyn Bowl.

Afro-Punk Festival @ Commodore Barry Park
Brooklyn’s free two-day Afro-Punk Festival wraps up today with sets from punk legends Death, Danny Brown, Trash Talk, K-OS, Living Colour, DJ Prince Paul, Questlove, Big Freedia, Chuck D & DJ Lord (performing Fear of a Black Planet) and more.

Joan of Arc, CO LA, Bubbles @ Shea Stadium
With “Kinsella” becoming a name drop for a huge chunk of the recent noodly emo bands, it should be remembered that those guys still tour as well. Tonight Tim Kinsella brings his band Joan of Arc to a venue just as DIY as the ones his influencees tend to play, Shea Stadium. And making it better, experimental electronic musician CO LA is on the bill as well. They both do it again tomorrow at Mercury Lounge too.

Multicult, Low Fat Getting High, DONT @ Death By Audio
Brooklyn punks Low Fat Getting High never seem to stop playing. Tonight they’ve got a hometown gig with Baltimore’s Multicult and Dont.

Bent Shapes @ South Street Seaport’s Front / Stage (FREE)
Boston’s Bent Shapes just released their terrific debut album, Feels Weird (which you can stream at P4K or Spotify) and today play the last of this Sound Bites series. BV’s Bill Pearis DJs at 3 PM and the band’s on at 4 PM.

Ex Wife, Vomitface, Gargoyle Twat, Kalen Lister @ Pianos
New Brunswick post-punks Ex Wife, who released the very solid New Colors LP earlier this year, will be tearing up Manhattan at Pianos tonight.

Ken Fury, Diavel, Vulture Shit @ Cameo
Brooklyn guitar-less punks Vulture Shit are always worth catching, and tonight they’re opening a bill at Cameo that also includes Ken Fury and Diavel.

New Power Generation @ City Winery
It’s “Purple Week” at City Winery and tonight’s show is not Prince (or an artist formerly known as that) but it is members of his sometimes backing band, New Power Generation, plus the promise of “very special guests.” Tonight’s show is the last of six shows, and it’s also the most expensive and doubles as a VMAs afterparty.

The World Is…, Pity Sex, Modern Baseball, One Hundred Year Ocean @ Asbury Lanes
After playing an indie/punk-friendly lineup in Brooklyn on Friday, Pity Sex teamed up with two emo bands — The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die and Modern Baseball — for a Long Island show last night, and tonight they all do it again in NJ.

Hannibal Buress @ Knitting Factory
Hannibal Buress continues his weekly Sunday comedy night at the Knit tonight.

Asssscat 3000
Another weekly comedy show, Asssscat 3000, happens at UCB tonight.

Other shows of note tonight include Vensaire @ Ace Hotel and Kosha Dillz (who often opens for Turqoise Jeep) at B.B. King Blues Club.
