fans at Electric Zoo 2011 (more by Leia Jospe)
Electric Zoo

Electric Zoo faced some trouble over the weekend when two drug-related deaths and many hospitalizations led to the cancellation of day 3 (9/1). A Walk in the Park reports (via Gothamist):

A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at the Electric Zoo Music Festival on Randall's Island NYC Park Advocates has learned.

The teen woke up on Friday under a van in a parking lot with her pants undone and bruises and scratches on her legs, according to several city sources.

Medical personnel at Cornell Medical Hospital later determined she was sexually assaulted.

...

Thirty-one people were also arrested according to the police including two felonies. Offenses ranged from drug sales, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of controlled substances.

The Electric Zoo promoters will also be offering refunds for those who had tickets for Sunday. They write on Facebook:
We will be issuing full, automatic 100% refunds for SUNDAY passes. 50% refund for 2-Day FRI/SUN passes, including 1/2 service fees. 33% refund for 3-Day FRI/SAT/SUN passes, including 1/3 service fees. Now some mom has to tell her friends that her kid died at an EDM concert for the rest of her life

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 9:22 AM

If you see the people who go to these shows you wouldn't be as shocked with the outcome. Total amateur hour.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 9:28 AM

Not surprising since these are the same idiots who can't even handle their alcohol in Hoboken, Morristown, Atlantic City, etc.

Jersey Suburban idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 9:36 AM

The two people who died were from upstate NY and Rhode Island, not suburban New Jersey. But you have a point.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 9:39 AM

I kind of wish that kid in the picture wearing the Butters t-shirt is one of the deceased

Posted by Funderburgh | September 3, 2013 9:50 AM

whitehouse should have played this gig

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 10:09 AM

The sad thing is that butters kid probably lives in a suburb with a great public school system. But, he looks like rainman.

Can you actually see anything through those glasses?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 10:13 AM

I try not to hate on a whole genre of music but all of this is proof positive than Rave/House/EDM music is shit. Worse than the death metal guys who eat each other's brains.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 11:11 AM

There are two groups of house 11:11. Don't mix house/underground scene with EDM.

Theres normal indie people that see house shows in brooklyn.

Then theres douche bags, losers, and slummers that go to edm.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 11:15 AM

damn that must suck waking up under a van with your pants down

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 11:29 AM

^were there any Poland Springs bottles at the scene of the crime?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 11:40 AM

11:15am is trying to justify his/her taste in shitty music.

I think what's more tragic about this situation is the media's ignorance. MDMA as a drug does not kill people. It can mask severe dehydration, which causes seizures and death, but it is not the cause of dehydration.

What killed these kids was white powder sold as molly. Shit like PMA, piperazines, amphetamines, methamphetamines, DXM, etc. are known to be passed off as molly and/or pressed into ecstasy pills. All that shit can kill you, especially PMA which is deadly in small doses.

As a person that goes to illegal warehouse events around BK, people dying like this can put our scene in jeopardy. I really hope that the backlash from these deaths target events full of people that are fucking stupid with drugs - mainly young and uneducated EDM/trance/PLUR kids that scream YOLO.

6 hits of molly? YOLO indeed.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:04 PM

12:04, the illegal warehouse events in BK have been going on for years. I don't think this will jeopradize them it will just jeaopradize large dance music events. If you think about it- Lolapalooza never has anyone die and I don't think there were ever sexual assaults at it. But- all these tragedies did occur in 2 days at electric zoo.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:12 PM

yeah but woodstock 2000 had a lot of limp bizkit fueled sexual assaults, or so the media narrative went

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:14 PM

This is all such bullshit. EDM, jam bands, hardcore shows...shit happens all the time. Forget about the music for a minute and realize that the whole EDM scene is about fun and getting along with 40k other people at the same time. No genre does it better.

RIP to the dead. Also - if you mix FUCKING METH with molly and alcohol....well, that's trouble. If you take SIX HITS OF MOLLY (real or otherwise) when it's 90 and sunny, well, that's trouble too. I just don't get what Zoo or Made had to do with it?

Top it all off and a 16 year old gets raped (outside the venue) who happened to be at a 18+ show. That fucking sucks and the dudes deserve a good raping of their own. What does that have to do with Zoo or Made?

What does ANY of this have to do with Zoo or Made?

MDMA is not the killer here. Zoo isn't the killer and Made isn't the killer.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:24 PM

Not a lot of ass pumping room under a van. I feel bad for the attacker.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:24 PM

Happy day three was canned cuz we ended up at Output from 5pm until 3am and had a blast. Great people, great venue and fantastic beats. Thanks Output.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:26 PM

How was Laurent Garnier?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:33 PM

12:24-Speaking to The New York Daily News, one attendee claimed that “The security and staff along the entrance route did nothing to prevent drugs from being brought in.”

The event organizers will at least face a substantial fine.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:39 PM

He killed it! Showed the kids how to beat the bass out of a bass heavy sound set up. Really really good. Seriously, first time at Output and all of us were very impressed. The roof is chill with a full dance area full of....people dancing. Few lines ex the toilet. Just snagged tix to see Danny T in a couple weeks. See if the "magic" can be repeated.

Hats off though to Laurent Garnier who was top of the class at Zoo and at Output.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:41 PM

"one attendee" - there were five of us, all in VIP and each of us was searched and patted down on Saturday at the main entrance

pretty much negates 12:39pm

not that easy is it?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:43 PM

The fucking air conditioning repairman won't shut the fuck up. Its like being stuck with D in my house. Its brutal.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2013 12:46 PM

12:04 again,
Made Event, nor EDM killed people. It was the poor choices two individuals made. Was it right to cancel the event? I don't think so. Then again, you have to give Made Event credit for stepping up to the plate to show that they do care about the safety of their fans.

I went to E-Zoo on Friday to see Scuba (who cancelled last minute) and Joy Orbison (absolutely killed it). I have gone every year E-ZOO has been thrown, and attendance seems like it doubles each year. I was of the opinion something tragic like this was bound to happen. Despite the bag/pocket search being the hardest of all years, it becomes a numbers game when you have that many young revelers jumping up and down to fast paced electronic music in extreme heat.

I don't know how you prevent something like this. I don't think you can when it's this large of a scale. People die at large scale festivals every year. My only thought is to educate people of the dangers of club drugs and set-up booths that will test your drugs for content/purity so you know what you are taking. Even then, it won't prevent idiots from dying.

sorry but trying to link twilo to ezoo is a stretch - what's the suggestion? that zoo was created as his own new and improved drug emporium?

drugs will always be here. kids will always do them and mistakes will happen. get over it
