"We are Phoenix, from Paris, France" lead singer Thomas Mars shouted. "Are you with us or what?"

This gave way to the dance-pop musings of "Trying To Be Cool". The main-stage fans, many of whom had waited all day through the draining and relentless heat for Beyonce, appeared to be simultaneously exhausted and excited.

Mars then laid down on the stage, foreshadowing the introduction of their riveting instrumental track "Love Like A Sunset Part 1", a song crushingly augmented by a guitar riff mixed much louder than it was on record.

Then it was time for "1901". Mars stood on the front-row barriers propped up by security as cameras and phones popped out of every orifice of the embracing audience. He then took to the sea of fans, singing as he swam across their heads until he popped up at the soundboard rafters and made his way back. [Crave Online]

The Jay Z-curated Made In America festival went down on Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway this past weekend (Saturday, 8/31 and Sunday, 9/1). The first day included sets from Beyonce, Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, Public Enemy, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky (who showed up late and played an abbreviated set), Haim, Rudimental, and more. Pictures of those artists (and a few) others are in this post. The festival also had a few last-minute punky additions on the Skate Park Stage including Cloud Nothings, Balance & Composure, and Restorations, who we unfortunately missed.

Jay Z also used the festival to announce his upcoming Magna Carta World Tour. Dates haven't been announced yet but will be soon, so stay tuned.

Some of the artists who played day 1 will be in NYC this week and next, including Haim, who play Webster Hall tonight (9/3) with IO Echo (sold out), and 2 Chainz who plays Williamsburg Park on 9/10.

Beyonce and Phoenix will also be back later this year to play Jay Z's home base, Barclays Center.

Stay tuned for day 2 pictures. A second set of day 1 pics is HERE and more of day 1 below...

Every mall in south NJ and Philly was empty on Sat and Sun..all the 12-18 year olds were in attendance...worst excuse for a "festival" ever...not emough water lines, not enough food, too much EDM and Rap...each time you got a drink you were carded

Does Jay-Z actually curate this festival, or just bankroll it? It's hard to imagine him sitting around and being all like, "Yeah, I really like this punk band called Restorations. Book them!" It's just like that Metallica festival... Doubt they know half the bands playing.

11:19, I think he has to do it because of debt or still has debt from some show that didn't make it well. I remember reading that last year.

wow, it is always so funny to me how when if i let go and just choose something i have never watched or heard of before. it always seem to be the exact thing i have not only been praying to find but the exact thing i needed to hear. that smile on kurt's face as he dropped is exactly the smile i would be smiling if the power of the words to the song didnt have me weeping. (my wife and i have been going through a very hard time and i was so uncertain as to what was going to happen, and just as i played the song she text and it appears things may work out.) sticking with it and just pushing through the pain truly is the only way to make progress. face adversity head on and you have no choice but to crash right through it. you may be hurt but you will be past it. i just thank god everyday for everyone in this world that shares their talents and shows others exactly what is possible when you just keep trying.
