MGMT at FYF Fest 2013 (more by Wei Shi)
MGMT

MGMT's insanely weird new self-titled album, which is about as far out from Congratulations as that album was from Oracular Spectacular, comes out next week (9/17), but if you're an RDIO user you can stream it now. It's not just a stream though, it's also a trippy visual experience called "Optimizer" which lasts for the entirety of the record. Maybe it's just timing, but this whole thing goes pretty well with that new Arcade Fire song/visual.

If you're in NYC, you can experience the "Optimizer" on a big screen tonight (9/11) at Knitting Factory, where they're showing it at 8 PM. Doors open at 5, and it's totally free.

MGMT is also the subject of Pitchfork's new cover story, which is a good read if you're interested in the band's shift from accidental pop stars to hard-working creators of strange, somewhat difficult music.

All tour dates, including Virgin FreeFest, are listed, along with the video for "Your Life Is A Lie," below...

Congrats MGMT on achieving your goal of making an album of almost completely unlistenable music.

Thanks pitchfork for keeping me off your site for the day by attempting to force this garbage down my throat...

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 2:52 PM

Is Max Horwich involved?

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 2:55 PM

this album is retarded....so pitchfork will prob give it a 9.2

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 2:55 PM

its pathetic that the same person wrote the first 5 comments

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 2:58 PM

do you think they'll play?

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 3:06 PM

@2:58, I only wrote one of them...

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 3:36 PM

This is not even close to weird.

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 4:03 PM

it's just bad

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 4:06 PM

All you haters need to just shut the fuck up. These are my boys from Wesleyan, yo! Not that my dogs Ben and Andrew give a fuck about you posers, but still. Obviously you can't appreciate good music! Wesleyan alumni unite!

3:06 this is actually a "secret" performance. The band will play a few songs after they leave the Fallon studio in midtown.

Big Max had to come into thread and regulate.

Papa, Columbia records won't pay my rent anymore. They said i only made one good album. I might have to the mansion in Connecticut. I'll become a painter/actor. Lets go back to the old days when you paid my rent.

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 7:07 PM

Daddy your check for this months rent didn't come yet. I might have to move from Brooklyn back to the mansion in Connecticut. Clear the basement. The jacuzzi is still there, right?

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 7:08 PM

I moved to Brooklyn to play the part of a poor artist. It's getting old papa. It's back Connecticut for me papa.

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 7:10 PM

This isn't "difficult music." It's just sounds plain bad.

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 9:52 PM

Wesleyan > haters

"shaman-chic"

Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2013 10:51 PM

Did you all just see there set on Fallon. It was epic!!! Best band from nyc PERIOD

Andrew bought a house in Rockaway, Queens right by the ocean.

Well we know the kickstarter for his house is coming when it blows away in the hurricane.

I admire this band and would really like to like this album, maybe a few bong hits would help.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 10:59 AM

I've heard many different ways to describe MGMT, but never "I admire this band" (until now). So now we are admiring spoiled pothead hipsters from Highly Competitive colleges? Just want to make sure I update my scorecard correctly.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 11:43 AM

Get ready for some more whackness. These guys are playing the Barclays Center on 12/13.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 1:14 PM

If 1:14 is true, that's hilarious. "We're trying to get away from the people who just want to hear us play 'Kids,' but we're going to play a big arena where 90% of the people will be there just for that reason."

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 1:32 PM

Cannot wait to have my hands on a physical copy. 9/17.

Posted by Bob | September 12, 2013 3:46 PM

I too admire this band. I have no doubt that they had the musical ability to continue along the line of their big singles, and yes, the fact that they choose to take a more a difficult road is admirable, no matter how cynically you want to look at it. That said, this album is not a success, but as long as they are searching for interesting ideas, I will be willing to support them, even in failures.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 4:26 PM

I like smirking at poor people. MGMT.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 9:04 PM

White people.

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2013 9:38 PM

Great!

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2013 3:19 AM

Gonna put out there the unpopular opinion that this album actually kinda rocks. Sure, I thought it was all some cacophonous mess of overdone electric whiz bangs from a band that's clearly burnt out and doing too many drugs, but that was the first time I heard it.

After a couple spins, it's actually becoming quite a euphoric experience for me. Hint: Just listen to it without watching those silly psychedelic video animations short things.

I mean, all the songs from Alien Days to Your Life is a Lie are very original and beautiful in their grotesque abandon and freedom from expectations... Just sayin'

Posted by revillo | September 13, 2013 5:25 AM

bv commentators: hating on a band for making music that's too commercial while simultaneously hating on the same band for making music that's too non-commercial

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2013 7:53 AM

This album sucks 8=====D~~~

Posted by Anonymous | September 13, 2013 8:50 AM

7:53, that's found many more places besides just here. A Natalie Merchant song comes to mind that would pertain.

I thought the album was great! I think it will be a grower for those that are iffy about it. I really liked Cool Song No.2. They came out with a music video with it yesterday and it has a pretty interesting concept. The song was well-written too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg2IcEHWXWo&feature=youtu.be

Posted by Jordan | September 18, 2013 2:58 PM

Hey, I actually really liked it. It's definitely one of those albums that grows on you and yeah, Your Life is a Lie was probably a joke of sorts (from what I can tell MGMT is getting kind of sick of the spotlight), but please don't judge the whole album based off of it. Try Alien Days or Cool Song No. 2... they're pretty dang awesome. Either way, I was not disappointing and am loving MGMT *even* more (if that's even possible). Looking forward to whatever they make next :))

Posted by Alyssa | September 18, 2013 5:54 PM

Have you seen the video for Cool Song No.2?? Not at all what I was expecting http://smarturl.it/MGMTCSNo.2 makes me appreciate the tracks even more

Posted by Rachel | September 20, 2013 4:50 PM

It's hard to believe that these guys did the soundtrack for Priscilla Queen of the Fountain
