Midlake

As mentioned, Midlake are carrying on after the departure of frontman Tim Smith and will release their fourth album, Antiphon, via ATO on November 5. If you heard the LP's title track, the whole album is pretty much in that vein: spacy, harmonious, heavy-on-the-toms prog. I dig it. "Antiphon" is streamable below if you haven't heard it.

Midlake will be hitting the road this fall too, as you might expect. The band haven't announced a full North American tour, but there are a couple East Coast shows, including a NYC record release show happening on November 6 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today at noon with the public on-sale starting Friday (9/20).

All tour dates are listed, along with the song stream and album artwork, below.

It's not as if New York City
Burnt down to the ground
Once you drove away
It's not as if the sun won't shine
When clouds up above
Wash the blues away

Are we breaking up
Are we breaking up
Is there trouble between you and I
Did my heart break enough
Did it break enough this time

Here's to all the pretty words
We will never speak
Here's to all the pretty girls
You're gonna meet

Am I breaking up
Am I breaking up
Is there trouble on the line
Did your heart break enough
Did it break enough this time

Ooh it feels good to be free
Ooh it feels good to be free
Ooh it feels good to be free

Betrayal is a thorny crown
You wear it well
Just like a king
Revenge is the saddest thing
Honey, I'm afraid to say
You deserve everything

Am i breaking up
Are we breaking up
Is there trouble between the lines
Did your heart break enough
Did it break enough this time

Ooh it feels good to be free
Ooh it feels good to be free
Ooh it feels good to be free

Fossil Collective are a very´╗┐ similar band that midlake fans would like. Go check out Wolves or On & On and you'll see what I mean.

This album still wows me, despite loving it wholly since the last few days of 2013 (when I made its surprise acquaintance through a friend's computer streaming Internet radio). Shades of King Crimson (notice "Vale"), British, early Vertigo-label proto-prog ("Ages") and the Moody Blues ("Aurora Gone") colour a modern sound not far removed from midway between Radiohead and Coldplay. "It's Going Down" is the tune that hooked me in, and it's still the one that sends me dreamily swooning the fastest.´╗┐
