Pixies at The Echo - 9/6/13 (via Lisa Worden)
Pixies

The reunited Pixies had been pretty quiet since the end of their 2011 tour, but a lot's been happening over in their world lately. First they lost bassist/backing vocalist Kim Deal only to soon release their first new song in almost a decade. It was then announced that Kim Shattuck of The Muffs would take Deal's place in the band and that they'd be touring (including Riot Fest Chicago and four sold-out NYC shows). Then out of nowhere, they dropped a surprise four-song EP (which Pitchfork just gave a 1.0, what did you think of it?).

The new lineup has been rehearsing for their tour in LA, and as Slicing Up Eyeballs reports, they played a surprise show there at The Echo on Friday (9/6). The band played a 26-song set which included tons of old favorites from all four full lengths (and Come On Pilgrim), with the most coming from Surfer Rosa. They also played "Bagboy," three of the four songs on EP-1, two unreleased new ones ("Blue Eyed Hexe" and "Greens and Blues"), and their covers of The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" and Neil Young's "Winterlong."

Check out the full setlist and videos from the show below...

Sadly, Pitchfork had it right with a 1.0 rating. The only good thing on that EP was the cover art.

I never realized 'Here Comes Your Man' was an Aborted song! Hailz!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 10:08 AM

pitchfork's rating just exemplifies the high-minded, faux-arts image it tries (too)hard to maintain.

while ep-1 pales by comparison with most prior pixies music, it is STILL the pixies (albeit, a truncated, kim-less pixies which means less pixie dust in the mix). but the fact that it's the pixies means SOMETHING.

i'm just not sure what yet.

bagboy is a good song and i suspect ep-1 will grow on me. but pixies music in the past never had to grow on me. it disturbed and entertained from the get-go.

these are uncharted waters for rockin daddy, a pixies fand since their inception.

where is my mind?

Nah, Pitchfork was right. This shit sucks and if it wasn't made by the Pixies, nobody would even remotely care.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 10:30 AM

RD - you picked up on something important. There's no need to have to have this crap 'grow on you'. It's lifeless. Complete waste of time. I think you ought to go back to your precious Monkeys. At least they don't have a legacy to fuck up!!

"the band had attempted to play "Here Comes Your Man", but aborted it halfway through the first verse. Black Francis was having a hard time remembering the correct lyrics and finding the right key to sing in."

wawawa

and yea EP-1 sucks, but the band's still better than whoever you're paying to see that night

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 11:10 AM

I have to agree with Pitchfork. The EP is completely disgraceful to their impeccable catalogue. They should have never recorded new music. Why tamper your legacy with this crap?

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 11:13 AM

"Why tamper your legacy with this crap?"

Cause Black Francis don't give a fuck and you will still pay to see them

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 11:16 AM

pixies are so good. EP-1 is so bad. what are ya gonna do.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 11:46 AM

alert me when they play ed is dead

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 11:52 AM

They shouldn't have tried to continue without Kim Deal. They could've stayed touring as a money making greatest hits act, and Black Frances could've continued his somewhat creatively respected, mostly obscure solo career on the side.

But I'm guessing that wasn't enough for him. So now we're getting this crap sold to us as The Pixies. Meh.

I actually thought the EP was pretty damn good. Not conventional songs at all, but they are all good. Did peefork really give it a 1.0?? Jesus, what a bunch of clueless twerps.

Great that the Alternative 'kids' have now gotten to the point where they don't even want to be challenged anymore. The yoga moms/beard-dads just can't handle it these days, I guess.

If this useless EP came out about...I don't know, 9 years ago when they actually reformed it would have been better received and people may have actually given a damn.

"Great that the Alternative 'kids' have now gotten to the point where they don't even want to be challenged anymore."

You actually think this music is challenging? Jesus are you shallow.

Posted by Anonymous | September 9, 2013 1:59 PM

It's obviously pretty fucking challenging for Pixies "fans", genius. Hence the uproar. Jesus you are missing the obvious.

Is "Blue Eyed" hexe the song that He is screaming in that Vine clip whilst driving that he posted to his twitter? ive wanted to hear that ever since i first saw the clip

Basically, you don't know shit about the Pixies and that actually brings comfort to me. I, as well of millions of others had the pleasure to grow up with them. You didn't and you probably/most definitely would've hated them. This Pixies is radio friendly. If you love this shit, you were definitely in diapers when the Purple Tape surfaced. I doubt you even know what that is.
