Rose Windows @ LPR 9/4/2013
The Suuns/Rose Windows tour stopped in NYC on Wednesday night (9/4) at Le Poisson Rouge (a first set of photos from that show is here). Brooklyn locals Dinowalrus opened to a relatively empty house, but they seemed to take it in stride, and by the end of their set the room had started to fill.
Seattle's Rose Windows -- self-described "hard hitting hippies" -- absolutely wrecked the audience with their blend of heavy psych rock that sits somewhere between Fairport Convention and Black Mountain with just a touch of stoner doom acts like Electric Wizard or Sleep. Their debut album, The Sun Dogs, is a lush, warm recording and I had my doubts that they would be able to successfully capture that same feel live. But Rabia Shaheen Qazi's smoky voice and the admittedly excellent sound at Le Poisson Rouge quickly converted me.
Rose Windows did seem an odd choice to open for the droning, shoegazey yet danceable Suuns. The band launched straight into their unrelenting set, seemingly unaware of the audience. Admittedly, Suuns is not really my speed, but it was hard not to appreciate their careful balance of precision and urgency. They play with a hypnotic intensity that isn't effectively communicated on record.
Suuns and Rose Windows hit the Hopscotch Festival in North Carolina this weekend. Rose Windows will be back during CMJ for the Hardly Art showcase at Death By Audio on October 17, so if you didn't catch them this time around, definitely check them out next month. They are well worth it.
