Ty Segall @ Bowery Ballroom 8/30/2013
Ty Segall is usually making a racket, stomping on the fuzz pedal and generally tearing shit up. But his latest album, Sleeper, delves into psych folk and is mostly acoustic. Likewise the tour for the album, which swept through NYC for two shows last week, took a similar approach, with Ty and his band sitting down and mostly "unplugged." They played Sleeper in full and then a set of "hits" from his other records. At Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday (8/29) he also worked in a couple of covers, Black Flag's "I've Had It" and, during the encore, Love's "Live and Let Live." Acoustic guitars may have been the engine, but Ty was no less loud or into it -- and it didn't stop the packed crowd from moshing or stage diving. Great show.
While I went to MHOW, our photographer was at Bowery Ballroom the next night (8/30) where Arp, David Novick and Chis Cohen opened. Pictures from that whole show are in this post. Ty will be back in NYC in much rowdier form with his proto-metal band Fuzz next month to play at Mercury Lounge on October 12 (tickets).
