Antibalas at Capitol Theatre in 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Antibalas

NYC Afrobeat band Antibalas plays a pair of hometown shows this weekend: Saturday (10/12) at Roulette in Brooklyn (tickets) and Sunday (10/13) at the Highline Ballroom (tickets). The opener the first night is Tuelo Her Cousins, and Song Sparrow Research for the second.

The Saturday's concert serves as a benefit for MIMA Music (whose mission is "to build a global network of arts-education programs, music education partners, and music based curriculum in under-served schools around the world").

Last year, the band released a new record, its first in a half-decade (they'd been kept pretty busy with other projects, like the musical Fela!). The self-titled collection was recorded at Daptone Record's House of Soul Studios in Brooklyn. You can watch a session of the band performing at the studio below...

I just caught the Antibalas show last night: lots and lots of dancing fun! Well worth the ticket price, this 11 piece afrobeat orchestra should be high on your concert list. One of the highlights of the evening was a phenomenal solo by drummer Miles Arntzen. His looks are deceptively young for the talent that this guy packs. They're playing at the Crocodile in Seattle tonight, but in the mean time, check out this track from their latest self-titled album.
