Andrew of Castevet at Lit Lounge, 2010 (more by Samantha Marble)
Castevet

Extreme sport junkie, Music Academy presenter, sponsor of cool Sound Select showsmagazine publisher and beverage maker Red Bull has put together a list of the 30 best guitarists under 30. In the two-part rundown, the list covers some territory, lumping Pallbearer's Brett Campbell, Liturgy's Hunter Hunt Hendrix, Mac Demarco, Danielle Haim, Ben Greenberg of The Men, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females and Fun guitarist and Lena Dunham-dater Jack Antonoff onto the list. You can check out the whole list below.

Music of the heavier persuasion was decently represented, and Castevet's Andrew Hock made the cut. You can catch him in action with Castevet at an Invisible Oranges sponsored show on October 25 at Union Pool with Churchburn, Oneirogen and Vorde. Also on the list, as a pair, are Inter Arma riff monsters Trey Dalton and Steven Russell. Inter Arma will be back in NYC soon to play Saint Vitus on October 30 with Black Tusk, Descender and No Way.

Ty Segall, who also made the list, will be here next weekend (but on drums) with his band Fuzz, playing a sold out show at Mercury Lounge on 10/12 with CCR Headcleaner. (There is also a show with "Buzz" and "DDT Shampoo" at Death by Audio on 10/13).

You can catch The Men at MHOW in November.

Speedy Ortiz, among others, will be here for CMJ.

Who'd they leave off the list? Check out the full list of Red Bull's 30 under 30 below...

Wheres the White Denim dudes at?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:15 PM

Why does everyone love Zachery Ty Bryan so much these days?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:16 PM

Brittany Howard???? She isn't even the best guitarist in her own band

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:23 PM

White Denim, seconded. Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Posted by Panopticon | October 2, 2013 7:26 PM

damn, i'm OLD. only ever heard of one name on this list...gary clark jr.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:38 PM

More proof that the only worthwhile person in the world under 30 is Rafa Nadal.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:53 PM

Where is Hendrix?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 7:56 PM

Hahahahha red bull. You clueless motherfuckers

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 8:07 PM

Joe from cymbals eat guitars should've been on this list. dumb.

Posted by Obvious | October 2, 2013 8:09 PM

wheres slash? he's like 28, right?

Posted by d | October 2, 2013 8:30 PM

This list could be titled "The 30 people Under 30 Who Play Guitar In Bands That Still Feature Actual Guitars."

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 8:33 PM

I am definitely not hip enough at all.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 8:46 PM

Where's UNLOCKING THE TRUTH!?!?!??!?!

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 8:56 PM

This list highlights how bad the musical landscape is and will be for a few more years... Death to Indie!

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 8:59 PM

no Max Horwich?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 9:12 PM

Wow Red Bull is really on the pulse of the indie worlZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 9:17 PM

Dudes from Real Estate and Andrew Cedermark. List is invalid

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 9:42 PM

I'd say Mike Dimmitt from Mutilation Rites but word on the street is he's 40

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 9:43 PM

wow this is bs. i checked onlythe female guitar players cause im looking for proof that they are real (lori linstruth, orianthi). but this is a list of some childish dumbass indie/punk fan who thinks he knows something

Posted by ron | October 2, 2013 9:44 PM

Wavves?? Has he ever played ANYTHING other than power chords in his entire career?

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:08 PM

Only these 2, they're worth in the list

Jake Orrall, JEFF The Brotherhood
Marissa Paternoster, Screaming Females

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:20 PM

Wiley Griffin, MUN

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:20 PM

How old is Kaki King? Same goes for Marnie Stern

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:20 PM

"Lol! But the truth is Marissa outshreds that entire list"

I agree. She might not be Yngwie, but she has a nasty tone and tasty riffs.

"How old is Kaki King? Same goes for Marnie Stern"

Marnie Stern is nowhere near being a top guitarist. Then again, she probably can make this weak list.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:28 PM

Katie Crutchfield...hah!

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 10:49 PM

The guy in Givers is better than most of these people--he probably ought to be on this list.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 11:38 PM

i think this is supposed to be a joke.. in the intro they lump Billy Corgan with Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Jack White... oh and 90% of their guitarists are garbage

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2013 11:59 PM

That chick from Screaming Females...ugh, what is worse? Her pretentious "singing" or her half-baked Joe Satriani guitar playing? I would at least bang Marnie Stern.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:10 AM

it seems like they got the intern to put together this list

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:11 AM

fuck Haim

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:14 AM

Danielle Haim, Haim

Posted by Danielle | October 3, 2013 12:42 AM

#1 Marissa Paternoster
#29 - #100000000000000 the rest

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:58 AM

"out show at Mercury Lounge on 10/12 with CCR Head"

pretty much says it all.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 1:33 AM

Who came up with this list EXACTLY? They need to see a doctor to have the cocks removed from their ears.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 3:58 AM

Mac Demarco!!! Great!!!

Posted by Diseño Web Madrid | October 3, 2013 4:07 AM

Haha, seems like not many agree with this list. I doubt this was done through a poll or anything.

Posted by Drew | October 3, 2013 6:21 AM

Missing (assuming its because she's not indie and therefore, not cool) is Orianthi, the chick who would've played guitar in Michael Jackson's band if he lived. She also was Alice Cooper's guitarist on his last tour. She's 29.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 6:21 AM

Shitlist as expected. Filled with lowlifes who think playing guitar is something special. Fuck them....

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 6:30 AM

I normally dont partake in the shitbashing on this site but I have to agree. This is regoddamndiculous. Shitlist indeed.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:06 AM

I agree with 10:20:

Only these 2, they're worth in the list
Jake Orrall, JEFF The Brotherhood
Marissa Paternoster, Screaming Females

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:21 AM

Nathan Williams can fucking shred. You're all assholes.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:27 AM

Yeah, it's like they just gave a nod to guitar bands without any real merit to the instrument. Kudos to someone for keeping it alive, but, it's just a big circle jerk.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:27 AM

stop trying to make Speedy Ortiz a thing ok????? It's not happening.

And Katie Crutchfield is fucking useless as a musician in general

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:36 AM

Since when do indie fans give a crap about how well someone plays a guitar?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:51 AM

Let's face it, most indie rock guitarists have sucked over the years, aside from a few exceptions.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:56 AM

Orianthi could rip any of these guitarists to shreds.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:57 AM

The worst part of this list, which is pretty terrible, is I can't even think of 30 young guitarists in popular bands who can actually play a fucking solo. There's a few, maybe like ten...Where are all the guitar gods? Are they DJs now?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 9:53 AM

Duh, Blake Mills

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 10:01 AM

This list should probably just be Blake Mills.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 10:12 AM

10:20 marnie stern is like 50

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 10:13 AM

Nathan Williams, Wavves and Jack Antonoff, Fun?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 10:17 AM

Um, the guy from Jeff the brotherhood removed the bottom three strings of his guitar because he thought they were too hard. Are you fucking kidding me?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 10:51 AM

Eddie Van Halen is only 29.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:24 AM

holy fuck. this list is so fucking bad. it should be called 30 people who own guitars that have been mentioned on pitchfork in the last 90 days.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:33 AM

Imagine what the list would've been in 1973...or 83...or 93. This is a sad state of affairs.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:37 AM

Now that he's divorced (again), Jack White doesn't bang anyone under 30 -- that should totally count for the purposes of this idiotic list.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:37 AM

^ sorry, i meant OVER 30. Silly me.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:38 AM

I maintain that Max Horwich got snubbed. I mean, he WENT TO WESLEYAN, PEOPLE.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:50 AM

The only 30 guitarists under 30 that some guy at Redbull has heard of.

Good songwriter does not equal good guitarist. Wtf.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 11:59 AM

What about the dude from Caveman?

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:20 PM

I feel like Dylan Baldi has been 22 forever.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 12:28 PM

1. Missy P
2. This slot left blank out of respect to Missy P
3. Everybody else

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 1:08 PM

Marissa Paternoster, Screaming Females
is the only one i agree with

Posted by ham hands bill | October 3, 2013 1:21 PM

goerge lynch >> all these posures

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 2:15 PM

Bradford Cox is getting old

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 2:16 PM

LOL!

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 3:41 PM

This list is a joke without Blake Mills and Annie Clark/St. Vincent. Like come on, that drug addict from DIIV made the list? That's ashame.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 3:46 PM

Just googled Annie Clark and she's 31, but it's still stupid that Blake Mills is not on the list.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 3:49 PM

There is one legit BEST guitarist on that list. Gary Clark Jr. The rest are front men/women who also play guitar. The dude from JEFF uses 3 fucking strings for crying out loud. This is a list of bands someone likes, that just happen to have guitars in the music. Whoever wrote this should never voice their musical opinion ever again.

Posted by o0 | October 3, 2013 4:12 PM

WHAT THE FUCK? WHERE IS CHRIS GEORGES FROM FANG ISLAND.
THAT DUDE IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE ON THE LIST!

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 4:17 PM

Speedy Ortiz sucks. I have never been more bored or unimpressed during a set. No matter how much you pay your PR person...

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 4:23 PM

^ Dude, we know you're the same person writing every single comment hating on speedy ortiz. Move on.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2013 8:46 PM

Haha, diiv sucks

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2013 7:19 AM

I think a LOT of people hate Speedy Ortiz

yeah, FUN... they're real rippers..

Gary Clark Jr #1 no debate about it

Posted by Liv | November 1, 2013 8:22 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2014 12:58 AM

Frohawk

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2014 1:27 AM

Wow, some of the names on here are unbelievable. Nathan Williams is a great musician, but I know a million guys who can run rings round him on a fretboard. Everything I've heard him do is just solos and basic scales -- not that well either.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2014 3:57 PM

Blake Mills HAS to be on this list also. No offense, but whoever wrote this article probably doesn't understand guitar playing.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2014 3:59 PM

To the people who keep complaining about the amp not being on or the amp being too low, you should look into Waxahatchee before you judge her. Her first album American Weekend is supposed to have a low fi sound hence her choosing to not turn on the amp.
